We live in space time dimensions and all physical and social sciences are based on the dimensions. The representation and digitization of scientific phenomena into data and computation of the digitized data greatly depends on the spatiotemporal principles that govern the relationships of phenomena. The latest advancement of cloud computing is not an exception. Conducting cloud computing in a spatiotemporal fashion will help use spatiotemporal principles, which exist in all physical and social sciences, to optimize cloud computing and science discoveries. This paper 1) introduces the latest advancement of distributedcomputing; 2) analyzes the impact cloud computing has on GIS science, application, and education; 3) illustrates how spatiotemporal principles exist and can be utilized to enable cloud computing and science discoveries; and 4) discusses research directions and agenda for GIScience professionals in the 21st centuries.

Future intelligent environments will be inhabited by humans, robots and 'Smart Objects' and allow for seamless interaction beyond the desktop. These environments therefore have to be adaptive, self-organizing, provide autonomous reasoning and integrate a variety of heterogenous hardware, objects, sensors and actuators - which goes far beyond merely interconnecting different kinds of technology. In light of the dawn of personal robotics, these environments should be equally usable and supportive for humans and robots. Manipulation tasks involving physical objects are at core of the interaction in these environments. This places novel challenges on the involved 'Smart Objects'. We present an approach for supporting robotic systems in the interaction with physical objects while maintaining human usability and functionality by using so-called 'Cognitive Objects'. We describe our infrastructure to support developing, simulating, testing and deploying of pervasive computing systems, using ROS (Robot Operating System) as middleware, and present several application scenarios. The scenarios are not limited to the robotics domain, but include location-aware services, intelligent environments and mobile interaction therein. Based on our experience, recommendations for the design of 'Cognitive Objects' (CO) and environments are given, to address the individual strengths of humans and machines and to foster new synergies in shared human-robot environments.

The main contemporary human-system interaction (H-SI) problems consist in design and/or improvement of the tools for effective exchange of information between individual humans or human groups and technical systems created for humans aiding in reaching their vital goals. This book is a second issue in a series devoted to the novel in H-SI results and contributions reached for the last years by many research groups in European and extra-European countries. The preliminary (usually shortened) versions of the chapters were presented as conference papers at the 3rd internationalconference on H-SI held in Rzeszow, Poland, in 2010. A large number of valuable papers selected for publication caused a necessity to publish the book in two volumes. The given, 1st Volume consists of sections devoted to: I. Decision Supporting Systems, II. distributed Knowledge Bases and WEB Systems and III. Impaired Persons Aiding Systems. Text clustering can effectively improve search results and user experience of information retrieval system. Traditional text clustering approaches are based on vector space model, in which a document is represented as a vector using term frequency based weighting scheme. The main disadvantage of this model is that it cannot fully exploit semantic correlations between social annotations and document contents because term frequency based weighting scheme only captures the number of occurrences of terms in the document. However, social annotation of web pages implicates fundamental and valuable semantic information thus can be fully utilized to improve information retrieval system. In this paper, we investigate and evaluate several extended vector space models which can combine social annotation and web page text. In particular, we propose a novel vector space model by computing the semantic correlations between social annotations and web page words. Comparing with other vector space models, our experiments show that using semantic correlations between social tags and web page words improves the clustering accuracy with RI score increase of 4% similar to 7%.

Peer to peer databases are becoming prevalent on the Internet for distribution and sharing of documents, applications, and other digital media. The problem of answering large-scale ad hoc analysis queries, such as aggregation queries, these databases poses unique challenges. Exact solutions can be time consuming and difficult to implement, given the distributed and dynamic nature of P2 P databases. In this paper, we present novel samplingbased techniques for approximate answering of ad hoc aggregation queries in such databases. computing a high-quality random sample of the database efficiently in the P2 P environment is complicated due to several factors: the data is distributed across many peers, within each peer, the data is often highly correlated, and, moreover, even collecting a random sample of the peers is difficult to accomplish. To counter these problems, we have developed an adaptive two-phase sampling approach based on random walks of the P2 P graph, as well as block-level sampling techniques. We present extensive experimental evaluations to demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed solution.
