Labeling videos for affect content such as facial expression is tedious and time consuming. Researchers often spend significant amounts of time annotating experimental data, or simply lack the time required to label their data. For these reasons we have developed VidL, an open source video labeling system that is able to harness the distributed people-power of the internet. Through centralized management VidL can be used to manage data, custom label videos, manage workers, visualize labels, and review coders work. As an example, we recently labeled 700 short videos, approximately 60 hours of work, in 2 days using 20 labelers working from their own computers. ©2009 IEEE.

This Event-Condition-Action(ECA) rule description language for Web Services(named WS-ECA) is the latest buzzword in the realm of autonomous, intelligent Agent Based Web Service Oriented computing (AWSOC). This rule description language supports interactions among serviceoriented, heterogeneous devices in a pervasive computing environment. It is based on ECA rules, which are embedded in distributed service devices and are triggered by events from internal or external factors. In this paper, we report our ongoing efforts to use DamlRuleML to define the ECA rules for a hybrid SNMP and Mobile Agent (MA) Based Network Management System (NMS) we have built in-house. Our work is a novel approach embedding ECA Rules into AWS (Agent Based Web Services) which is used to enable pervasive network management. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a novel method to measure the distance between two Gaussian Mixture Models. The proposed distance measure is based on the minimum cost that must paid to transform from one Gaussian Mixture Model into the other. We parameterize the components of a Gaussian Mixture Model which are Gaussian probability density functions (pdf) as positive definite lower triangular transformation matrices. Then we identify that Gaussian pdfs form a Lie group. Based on Lie group theory, the geodesic length can be used to measure the minimum cost that must paid to transform from one Gaussian pdf into the other. Combining geodesic length with the earth mover's distance, we propose the Lie group earth mover's distance for Gaussian Mixture Models. We test our distance measure in image retrieval. The experimental results indicate that our distance measure is more effective than other measures including the Kullback-Liebler divergence. Copyright 2009 ACM.

This paper adapts models from the area of spatial statistics to the task of predicting a user's interests (i. e., implicit item ratings) within a recommender system in the museum domain. We develop a model based on Gaussian spatial processes, and discuss two ways of computing item-to-item distances in the museum setting. Our model was evaluated with a real-world dataset collected by tracking visitors in a museum. Overall, our model attains a higher predictive accuracy than nearest-neighbour collaborative filters. In addition, the model variant using physical distances outperforms that using distances computed from item-to-item similarities. In this paper, we present further research achievements due to hand-OLAP, a Java-based distributed system that relies on semantics-based intelligent data cube compression techniques, and effectively and efficiently supports OLAP in mobile environments. Hand-OLAP is based on a systematic approach according to which first a two-dimensional OLAP view of interest is extracted from the target multidimensional data cube via the so-called OLAP dimension flattening process, and then this view is compressed by means of a meaningful semantics-based data cube compression approach. The compressed two-dimensional view is finally delivered to mobile devices, and used to interactive OLAP exploration and querying tasks in an off-line manner.

Trust is one of the most important means to improve security and enable interoperability of current heterogeneous independent cloud platforms. This paper first analyzed several trust models used in large and distributed environment and then introduced a novel cloud trust model to solve security issues in cross-clouds environment in which cloud customer can choose different providers' services and resources in heterogeneous domains can cooperate. The model is domain-based. It divides one cloud provider's resource nodes into the same domain and sets trust agent. It distinguishes two different roles cloud customer and cloud server and designs different strategies for them. In our model, trust recommendation is treated as one type of cloud services just like computation or storage. The model achieves both identity authentication and behavior authentication. The results of emulation experiments show that the proposed model can efficiently and safely construct trust relationship in cross-clouds environment.

Air quality and fuel efficiency has become important factors in decision-makings on urban traffic planning and management. To support the process, simulation models have potential to play essential roles in evaluation of planning alternatives and control strategies. However, traffic and its environmental impacts are different processes and often require various levels of models. With concerns on high computing performance and rich functionalities, it may be not appropriate to model emission inventory within traffic simulation. In this paper, we present a distributed simulation approach, and an independent emission/energy computing platform is built to simulate, visualize and analyze online emission outputs, given a microscopic traffic simulation tool, KTH-TPMA. Two distributed computing frameworks, common objects request broker architecture (CORBA) and service oriented architecture (SOA), are adopted in the distributed software design and implementation. Several emission models are implemented and generally evaluated in micro simulation runs of two road networks.

Practically all major metropolitan and large scale modern intelligent transportation systems have a centralized traffic management center (TMC) at their logical and functional core. The TMC provides control, coordinates system wide communications, and typically serves as a common hub from which multiple agencies plan and execute coordinated incident responses. Early in the development of the Oklahoma statewide ITS, it became clear that the costs associated with building and operating a large, centralized TMC would be prohibitive. An alternative design strategy emerged built around a distributed peer-to-peer network of low-cost ITS consoles based on desktop PC's equipped with innovative software and special hardware to support efficiently handling multiple video streams simultaneously. This has led to a geographically distributed, fault-tolerant communications and control system where the desirable functionality of a large centralized TMC is realized by a virtual TMC that enables the stakeholder agencies to remain physical located in their current facilities around the state. In this paper, we provide an overview of the system architecture as it has evolved through the first quarter of 2009 and highlight some of the recently developed system enhancements.

According to recent surveys, information workers send and receive an average of 133 messages per day, and users talk about "living" in email, spending an average of 21 percent of their time on it, as well as reporting general problems with overload. Information created by a business can represent either an asset or a liability, depending largely on how well it is managed. Email is no different in this respect: it can be a highly efficient and useful tool for communication, but only if the information it contains can be managed effectively. One of the main drawbacks of email usage today is its insufficient integration into the collective workspace environment. We believe that by integrating it with other external information (both on the desktop and on distributed servers), one can migrate some of this information to more appropriate storage environments, thereby partly addressing the problem of overload and offering users an integrated access to data and functionality. Currently, there is much research in the area of both personalised and business information management, but very little research that focuses on email as the primary information source, despite its ubiquity. In this paper we survey the current state of the art in email processing and communication research, focusing on the current and potential roles played by email in information management, and commercial and research efforts to integrate a semantic-based approach to email.

In petabyte-scale distributed file systems, metadata access performance and scalability will be critical to the whole system's performance and scalability. We present a new scheme called Dynamic Partitioning based on Directory Path (DPDP) for metadata management. In DPDP scheme, directory metadata and file metadata are managed in different ways, and the dynamically changing workload can be balanced by adjusting the metadata distribution on metadata servers according to their performance differences. Our simulation results show that our approach, comparing with other metadata management methods, has its advantages in performance, scalability and adaptability.
