Cellular signal transduction is initiated by the binding of extracellular ligands to membrane receptors. However, the concentration of ligand required for cellular activation is often lower than that required for receptor binding;receptors are often expressed in excess. To elucidate the physiological significance of this phenomenon, we have developed a Monte Carlo simulation program for kinetic analysis of ligand-receptor formation. Our present simulation showed that an excess amount of the receptors was not required for signal activation when the dissociation constant (Kd) of the ligand-receptor complex (LR) was low (10-9 or less). However, a low Kd value caused delayed LR dissociation after clearance of ligand from the extracellular space;no signal shutdown took place. These data indicate that an excess amount of receptors with high Kd (10-8 or more) was required for prompt signal propagation at physiological ligand concentrations and rapid signal cessation following ligand clearance. Our simulations were conducted using a conventional personal computer with a CPU running at 2.6 GHz under Windows XP or 2000 operating systems, and single simulation runs typically took less than two hours. Our simulation program could be readily implemented for kinetic analysis of any signal transduction system with various parameters, and could be used by any investigator because special computing hardware and training are not required. © 2007 IEEE.

A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a network consisting of a set of mobile hosts. Energy efficiency is a critical issue in MANETs since mobile hosts are with limited energy. Geographical Adaptive Fidelity (GAF) protocol proposed the grid-based architecture based on the idea of connected dominating set. It divides the whole network area into disjoint identical square grids, called virtual grids. In each grid, there is only one node for forwarding packets to achieve power saving. In this paper, we propose the Hierarchical Energy Conservation protocol (HEC). In this protocol, in order to increase the coverage of wireless transmission, it divides the whole network area into disjoint hexagonal grids instead of square grids and employs the hierarchical group control mechanism. Mathematical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed protocol not only prolongs the lifetime of MANETs but also maintains appropriate packet delivery ratio and latency. © MCCSIS 2007 .All right reserved.

Regular path queries (RPQs), expressed as regular expressions over the alphabet of database edge-labels, are commonly used for guided navigation of graph databases. While convenient to use, RPQs are notorious for their high computational demand. In this paper, we present a grid- aware, fault tolerant distributed algorithm for answering RPQs on spatial networks. We engineer each part of the algorithm to account for the assumed computational-grid setting. We experimentally evaluate our algorithm, and show that for typical user queries, our algorithm satisfies the desiderata for distributed computing in general, and computational-grids in particular.

Sensor networks have been considered as a base technology for constructing ubiquitous computing environment. However, most researches about sensor networks have not focused on ubiquitous computing but mainly focused on efficiency of sensor networks itself. Ubiquitous computing requires sensor networks to be accessed in a transparent and abstract manner from the outer world. However the requirements cannot be easily achieved because of physical restrictions of sensor networks and centralized data processing scheme. In this paper, we have designed a sensor overlay network that enables ubiquitous computing applications to consider sensor networks as an ordinary component of ubiquitous computing environment. Virtual sensors and actuators on the overlay network cooperate with each other and provide intelligent decision that was impossible to be implemented with current physical sensor networks. The proposed overlay network also provides dynamic service composition and device integration essential to ubiquitous computing. To evaluate the usefulness of the designed system, the overlay network is implemented and simulated on J-Sim simulator.

Pervasive computing provides an attractive vision for the future of computing where contextual intelligent services will be available anywhere at any time. However, how to integrate distributed resources existed among heterogeneous devices to build pervasive applications that can constantly adapt to the highly dynamic computing environment is still a challenge. By analyzing the pipelining feature within a user task and exploiting the parallelism among ubiquitous processors, we propose UMP-PerComp, a ubiquitous multiprocessor-based pipeline processing architecture to support high performance pervasive application development. UMP-PerComp is an integrated comprehensive framework that makes the development of pervasive applications easier. It includes a set of common services such as context management, resource management, service migration, topology management, that help to build applications and directly simplify the task decoupling and service composition. We describe the design and implementation of UMP-PerComp in this paper. Besides, we develop a distributed JPEG encoding application successfully on the UMP-PerComp. Our experience confirms that UMP-PerComp is a flexible, scalable and practicable framework with high performance.

Due to the ever increasing complexity of todays Enterprise Applications (EA), component technology has become the major means to keep the development of such applications under control. Although container technology provides tools to deploy component-based EAs, high demands regarding, e.g., availability, security and fault-tolerance combined with constantly changing user demands, varying loads and rapid change of business processes, introduce the need for adjusting systems in regular intervals without halting, restructuring and re-deploying the system as a whole. Consequently, the administration of EAs is a very complex task which has to be performed during runtime of the managed system. Hence, techniques from the area of Autonomic computing (AC) that allow for controlling and changing a running system without the need to go back to development can become highly useful. This paper presents the design rationale and overall architecture of a manageable kernel that equips the broadly accepted Enterprise Java Beans 3.0 (EJB) component standard for enterprise applications with additional facilities in order to make EJB components AC manageable at runtime. The system was realized EJB 3.0-compliant and provides container infrastructure enhancements as well as a tool needed to adapt standard EJB components. Copyright © 2007 ICst.

distributed computing infrastructures provided by sensor networks supports new ways of observing human motion. In this paper, we discuss algorithms that use data from sensor networks for tracking the gait of human walk. Three methods for identifying footsteps and footstep patterns that describe a walk of a subject are discussed. The methods interpret the data into a set of coordinates that represent a trajectory of the subject's walk. The results show that the proposed methods are more accurate and cost less than existing methods.

Data warehouses store large volumes of data according to a multidimensional model that provides a fast access for online analysis. The constant growth in quantity and complexity of data stored in data warehouses has led to a variety of data warehouse applications on distributed systems. The main benefits of these architectures are parallelized query execution and higher storage capacities. computing grids in particular are built to combine a large number of heterogeneous distributed resources. Their lack of centralized control however conflicts with the centralized structure of classical data warehouses. Autonomous data management on grid nodes requires efficient communication during query evaluation. The architecture we present supports a global data localization method with the help of a specialized catalog service. Our work is based on a model for unique identification and efficient local indexing of the warehouse data. Local indexes integrate computable aggregates for maximum utilization of locally materialized data in order to facilitate cost-optimized query execution. The grid services implementing these functionalities are deployed on the GGM project's test environment.

Central to improving and sustaining high levels of innovative design is the fundamental requirement to maximise and effectively manage design performance. Within the context of design in the 21st century, where the process is largely digital, knowledge-driven and highly distributed, this involves the creation of tailored design processes, the use of best-performing tool sets, technology mixes and complementary team structures. Managing these important elements can only be achieved through a fundamental understanding of today's complex, dynamic design environments. However, such detailed understanding is presently unavailable or at least very difficult to obtain. This is due to the lack of research methods for analysing the relationships between tools, teams, technologies and design process performance, the lack of capability to undertake in-situ analysis of design teams, and the limitations imposed on data acquisition and processing. One approach for overcoming the lack of research methods, is to consider what can be thought of as the design information itself and in particular its generation, representation, communication and use. To address the issues of holistic in-situ analysis and data acquisition, an intelligent design observatory is proposed that is specifically focussed on supporting observation and real-time analysis of design teams. This paper describes the underlying information-based strategy to overcome the lack of existing research approaches and reviews the state-of-the-art technologies for data capture, analysis and realtime processing. The paper then sets out fundamental requirements of a design observatory from the designer's perspective and presents a possible laboratory configuration. Following this, the issues and barriers to designing experiments involving the observation of practising designers are discussed and the paper concludes with examples of possible experiments and how such a laboratory might be used to support a global research progra

A series of problems arises with the emergence and fast development of grid. Among all the problems, one of them is how to smoothly connect heterogeneous grid platforms. There are a number of ways to solve this problem and the relatively more efficient one is using ontology. Based on this method, we focus on alleviating semantic inconsistency of various platforms and designing a novel ontology. This ontology is depicted by resource description framework (RDF) and transacted by adapters. Finally, we test our method and analyze its performance.
