Over the past decade, agent-based computing has emerged as a new and popular paradigm for design, implementation and analysis of distributed information systems. In this paper, the participant researchers in Health Care computing Group at University of Westminster concentrate on the agent-oriented methodology for the analysis and design of agent-based systems and identify how methodology can support both the levels of "agent structure" and of "agent society" in the agent-oriented software design and development process. The research reported here takes one leading agent-oriented methodology-Gaia, and then extended it by the creation of innovative design tools which aimed at better supporting application to real-world domains. In discussion section, agent-oriented methodology and AUML approaches are compared and evaluated in great detail;the strengths and weaknesses of the current agent-oriented methodology are explored and discussed;the importance of effectively using methodology to improve agents and their productivity potential also is emphasized. Finally, we draw conclusions from the work presented and the experience gained in this research and look into the future possible improvements on agent-oriented software engineering in the agent technology research field. © 2007 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose UsMSS (User-centric secure Multimedia Service System) which provides interoperability of multimedia contents among incompatible devices in intelligent home. In addition, an authentication method suitable for the intelligent home is suggested. Furthermore, the proposed system provides intelligent services by reflecting context information (user preference, user location, device status information, etc.) through a sensor network module and home server, providing transparent and secure service.

Smart Home, this term comprises various approaches, engaged in living and working now and in the future. The objectives of the various approaches range from enhancing comfort in daily life to enabling a more independent life for elderly and handicapped people. The term Ubiquitous computing, coined by Mark Weiser describes the ubiquity of computer and information technology. The task of Smart Objects, implanted into everyday items, is to sense the immediate environment using various types of sensors, and to process these information. This functionality assigns a kind of artificial intelligence to common, well known objects and enables comprehensive information-processing and interconnection of almost any kind of everyday object. The (preferably) transparent and hidden technology ranges from Wearable Computers and Smart Clothes to "intelligent" artificial replacements. It supports the user in almost every part of his life by extending his cognition and information processing capacity and tries to compensate for certain handicaps. The challenge regarding smart homes, especially for supporting the elderly and handicapped, is to compensate for handicaps and support the individual in order to give them a more independent life for as long as possible. In this paper, a common architecture for smart home environments is developed, mapped to an experimental setup, and finally evaluated.

Grid computing is an emerging computing paradigm that have a significant impact on the next generation information infrastructure. Computer networks and the Grid should be integrated together for supporting high-performance applications and a QoS-based network service broker is the key to this integration. In this paper, we propose a new approach for describing QoS capabilities of network services and develop a QoS-based broker technology for selecting network services that meet QoS requirements of grid applications. Our approach for network service description and selection is highly flexible and applicable to networking systems with various implementations. We also propose a system architecture for realizing the QoS-based network service broker within the service-oriented grid architecture.

Web services have greatly leveraged the world of Business-to-Business (B2B) communication and promise a lot more through dynamic service composition. In order to compose Web services into a business process, it is necessary to find suitable services, negotiate and establish Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with the service providers, build a workflow with the selected services and finally execute the workflow while monitoring the performance of the services to verify that the SLAs are satisfied. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework for a Comprehensive Service Management Middleware (CSMM) to leverage the usability of Web services in business processes. CSMM has a distributed and modular architecture suitable for the distributed nature of Web services and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) in general. The novel approach of architecting the middleware based on Web service technology can leverage outsourcing of management responsibilities, and thereby, make the most cost effective use of Web services.

With the rapid improvements in hardware, software and networks, the computing paradigm has also shifted from mainframe computing to ubiquitous or pervasive computing, in which users can focus on their desired services rather than specific computing devices and technologies. However, the emerging of ubiquitous computing has brought many challenges, one of which is that it is hard to allow users to freely obtain desired services, such as heterogeneous OSes and applications via different light-weight devices. We have proposed a new paradigm, called Transparent computing, to store and manage the commodity programs including OS codes centrally, while stream them to be run in non-state clients. This leads to a service-centric computing environment, in which users can select the desired services on demand, without concerning these services' administrations, such as their installation, maintenance, management, upgrade, and so on. In this paper, we introduce a novel concept: Meta OS to support such program streaming through a distributed 4VP + platform. Based on this platform, a pilot system has been implemented and it supports Windows and Linux environments. We verify the effectiveness of the platform through both real deployments and testbed experiments. The evaluation results suggest that 4VP + platform is a feasible and promising solution for future computing infrastructure in ubiquitous computing.

This paper presents a service oriented architecture (SOA) approach to a distributed framework for reusing, extracting and extending (tailoring) large domain ontologies in the semantic grid environment. The conceptual level of the framework describes how sub-ontologies are tailored while the architectural level of the framework describes the components of the framework that allows the tailoring process happen in the semantic grid environment. A prototype of the framework and a complexity evaluation measure are also provided.

Pervasive computing environments introduce new requirements in expressiveness and flexibility of access control policies which are almost addressable leveraging contextual information. Although context-awareness augments the expressiveness of policies, it increases the probability of arising conflicts. Generally, context-aware authorizations are defined using some contextual constraints on the involved entities in an access request. Accordingly, principles like "more specific overrides", which are employed to resolve possible conflicts, are required to consider the contextual constraints. In this paper, we formalize the use of context constraints in a typical context-aware multi-authority policy model; each authority is capable of defining an expressive conflict resolution policy leveraging context-based precedence establishment principles. Based on the policy model, we propose a comprehensive graph-based approach to resolve conflicts. The strength of the approach is that conflict detection which requires context-based inference is almost done statically and resolution is left for run-time.

We propose an efficient distributed query processing method for large XML data by partitioning and distributing XML data to multiple computation nodes. There are several steps involved in this method; however, we focused particularly on XML data partitioning and dynamic relocation of partitioned XML data in our research. Since the efficiency of query processing depends on both XML data size and its structure, these factors should be considered when XML data is partitioned. Each partitioned XML data is distributed to computation nodes so that the CPU load can be balanced. In addition, it is important to take account of the query workload among each of the computation nodes because it is closely related to the query processing cost in distributed environments. In case of load skew among computation nodes, partitioned XML data should be relocated to balance the CPU load. Thus, we implemented an algorithm for relocating partitioned XML data based on the CPU load of query processing. From our experiments, we found that there is a performance advantage in our approach for executing distributed query processing of large XML data.

With the emerging paradigm of grid computing and the development of grid infrastructures, grid-based applications are becoming a common approach for solving many complex, large-scale problems in science and engineering. In order to benefit from the large computing power of grid systems, efficient allocation of jobs to resources is necessary. In this work, we consider the allocation problem in immediate mode, in which jobs are allocated as soon as they arrive in the system. We implemented several methods and measured four parameters of the system: makespan, flow- time, resource utilization and matching proximity. The immediate methods are especially interesting when good quality allocations are necessary in very short time. The considered methods have been tested using the most difficult benchmark in the literature for the problem. The computational results allowed us to identify which of considered methods perform better for makespan, flowtime, resource utilization and matching proximity. Also, we were able to evaluate the usefulness of such methods if we knew in advance certain grid characteristics such as degree of consistency of computing, heterogeneity of jobs and resources.
