One of the most popular hash algorithms is the SHA-0, proposed by NTst. However, researchers have already found security flaws in SHA-0, thereby also posing a threat against other algorithms of the SHA family. In this paper we present two simple modifications which can be easily incorporated into the original SHA-0 algorithm to make it secure against one of its most basic attack methodologies. We further show that the modified algorithm performs equally well as the original one when compared against standard metrics that are used to evaluate hash functions. We have developed a prototype tool to compare and evaluate the modified and the original SHA-0 algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

We consider the problem of efficiently computing the skyline against the most recent N elements in a data stream seen so far. Specifically, we study the n-of-N skyline queries; that is, computing the skyline for the most recent n (/spl forall/n/spl les/N) elements. Firstly, we developed an effective pruning technique to minimize the number of elements to be kept. It can be shown that on average storing only O(log/sup d/ N) elements from the most recent N elements is sufficient to support the precise computation of all n-of-N skyline queries in a d-dimension space if the data distribution on each dimension is independent. Then, a novel encoding scheme is proposed, together with efficient update techniques, for the stored elements, so that computing an n-of-N skyline query in a d-dimension space takes O(log N+s) time that is reduced to O(d log log N+s) if the data distribution is independent, where s is the number of skyline points. Thirdly, a novel trigger based technique is provided to process continuous n-of-N skyline queries with O(/spl delta/) time to update the current result per new data element and O(log s) time to update the trigger list per result change, where /spl delta/ is the number of element changes from the current result to the new result. Finally, we extend our techniques to computing the skyline against an arbitrary window in the most recent N element. Besides theoretical performance guarantees, our extensive experiments demonstrated that the new techniques can support on-line skyline query computation over very rapid data streams.

Our society's modalities of communication are rapidly changing: we divide our activities between real and digital worlds and our daily lives are characterized by our constant access-to and processing-of a vast quantity and variety of information. These transformations of our lifestyle demand both a new architecture and interaction modalities that support the new as well as old ways of communicating and living. As a consequence of the prevalent role of information in today's society, architecture is presently at a turning point. Screens are everywhere, from the billboards which dot the contemporary urban cityscape, to the video walls which welcome us in the entry-halls of corporate headquarter buildings, to our desktop computer monitor at home, the PDA in our pocket, or the tiny private-eye screens of wearable computers. Wearable computers are starting to transform our technological landscape by reshaping the heavy, bulky desktop computer into a lightweight, portable device that's accessible to people at any time. Computation and sensing are moving from computers and devices into the environment itself. The space around us is instrumented with sensors and displays, and this tends to reflect a widespead need to blend together the information space with our physical space. "Augmented reality" and "mixed reality" are the terms most often used to refer to this type of media-enhanced interactive space. The combination of large public and miniature personal digital displays together with distributed computing and sensing intelligence offers unprecedented opportunities to merge the virtual and the real, the information landscape of the Internet with the urban landscape of the city, to transform digital animated media in public installations, in storytellers, also by means of personal wearable technology. The growing development in Web-based trust and reputation systems in the 21/sup st/ century will have powerful social and economic impact on all business entities, and will make transparent quality assessment and customer assurance realities in the distributed Web-based service oriented environments. The growth in Web-based trust and reputation systems will be the foundation for Web intelligence in the future. Trust and reputation systems help capture business intelligence through establishing customer relationships, learning consumer behaviour, capturing market reaction on products and services, disseminating customer feedback, buyers' opinions and end-user recommendations, and revealing dishonest services, unfair trading, biased assessment, discriminatory actions, fraudulent behaviours, and un-true advertising. The continuing development of these technologies will help in the improvement of professional business behaviour, sales, reputation of sellers, providers, products and services. In this paper, we present a new methodology known as CCCI (Correlation, Commitment, Clarity, and Influence) for trustworthiness measure that is used in the trust and reputation system. The methodology is based on determining the correlation between the originally committed services and the services actually delivered by a trusted agent in a business interaction over the service oriented networks to determine the trustworthiness of the trusted agent.

We have developed Japanese web search engine "Mondou (RCAAU)", which was based on the emerging technologies of. data mining. Our search engine provides associative keywords which are tightly related to focusing web pages. We also implemented the visual interface based on the technology of information visualization. lit order to improve the performance of various search strategies by using characteristics of web systems, we try to implement the advanced web information systems with data mining and information technologies. Firstly, we introduce various web mining algorithm, which efficiently reduces the computing cost of web search. We pay attention to a part of useful pages effectively and improve the performance of web search by using our proposed algorithms. Secondly, for preserving huge volume of born-digital information in the internet, we are focusing on technologies of web archiving system like WARP (http://***/). In order to handle monotonously increasing digital information, we have to resolve many difficult problems of long life data preservation by improving web searching techniques. Our experiences of our Mondou web search engine and cooperative distributed web robots are very useful and effective. Finally, the technologies of P2P (Peer-to-Peer) distributed search systems are becoming important rapidly. For example, it is very hard to discover appropriate information resources by simple queries of Gnutella, Freenet and so on. Therefore, in order to realize the topic-driven search, we propose more intelligent search systems, which are based on the technologies of data mining.

Bringing networked virtual game worlds and game world logic to the open Internet will spawn new types of computer games. It usually deals with thousands of interactive entities among its web servers. Game engine practitioners have used scripting technology to add soft computing capabilities to a variety of their engine modules. This article proposes a unified approach of using Neural Parallel Language (NPL) in a computer game's scripting engine. We have implemented a reduced version of NPL and our own 3D game engine in a pair. We will show the effectiveness of such a programming language methodology by means of our released game demo. As the web is becoming more and more computable (the semantic web) and intelligent (agent technology), neural network based programming paradigm as described in this article is likely to become the solution to general purpose distributed software applications.

Information and Communication technology (ICT) is penetrating deeper into daily life and work of people: mobile communications, portable devices, embedded computing and intelligent systems are major or opportunities for creating next generation information systems and infrastructures. Technologies such as Bluetooth, WLAN, or SIP-based broadband networks and 3rd generation mobile phones (UMTS) are offering the infrastructure to conceive information systems as pervasive, meaning that systems are accessible from anywhere, at any time, and with any device. This paper presents our achievements in this area of research based the research prototypes developed in our EU projects MOTION and EasyComp. Further, the paper outlines aspects of pervasive software services for dynamic virtual organizations that are considered in our ongoing project PeSSIFIC to fulfill needs and constraints of distributed and mobile collaboration scenarios.

Semantic Query Optimization (SQO) has become a prerequisite of query optimisation particularly for large databases. Generation of possible equivalent queries for a given query, database and a rule is a computationally intensive task for SQO. Hence, efforts are being made to propose a cost-effective solution by developing an equivalent query transformer which not only generates possible equivalent queries but tries to optimally utilize the raw computational power available in a distributed computing Environment (DCE). The proposed transformer has two parts: compiler and generator. The inputs to the compiler are the databases, rule set and the user query and its output goes to the input to the generator which then generates possible equivalent queries. Finally, a parallel computing model is proposed to implement the transformer for SQO in a distributed computing Environment. Implementation and other related issues are also discussed in the paper.

This paper presents a new technique of recovery for object-based distributed Shared Memory (DSM) systems. The new technique, integrated with a coherence protocol for atomic consistency model, offers high availability of shared objects in spite of multiple node and communication failures, introducing little overhead. It ensures fast recovery in case of multiple node failures and enables a DSM system to circumvent the network partitioning, as far as a majority partition can be constituted.

As information technology requirements for high availability and uptime become more important, it is of paramount importance to architect infrastructures and topologies that can comply. Infrastructure downtime results in application unavailability, frustration and financial loss. In order to address the demand for highly reliable complex computer systems, a new concept of infrastructure architecture needs to be put in place. In this paper, we propose a model that can support any type of applications in any configuration such as client-server, distributed, parallel processing, peer-to-peer, any middleware and protocols. Our infrastructure can self-configure, self-optimise, self-protect, self-manage and self-heal. The building methodology involves the employment of new types of Unix-based clustered systems using large application/middleware groupings, each having a master cluster controller. Each controlling engine consists of self-healing intelligent entities that can adapt and compensate for a variety of software or hardware problems. It has access to a pool of hardware and software resources to allocate on demand, automatically and transparently and mostly without service interruption. This design forces the infrastructure to make full use of its capacity and be highly fault-tolerant. We also present evaluation results from our pilot implementation that has been working for more than a year and a half within the production environment of a mobile phone/internet service provider.
