In this paper, we propose a user-friendly three-dimensional CG presentation system for a typical Japanese crafting industry based on agent and virtual reality functions over Japan gigabit Network (JGN) which is a testbed highspeed backbone network with 2.4Gbps. A large number of traditional Japanese fittings in a local city are redesigned by three-dimensional computer graphics into CAD data stored in the database servers distributed over JGN. Although each fitting data consists of more than several Mbytes size, user can interactively retrieve the designed fittings and put those into the traditional Japanese interior to design more creative and original house, hotels anf other buildings in realtime. We prototyped a presentation system using VRML and JAVA on networked CG workstations. User can walk through the desired virtual space as a Japanese interior organized by various Japanese traditional fittings ams interactively change those fittings by selecting from the database and replacing by simple operations. As a result, we could verify the usefulness of our suggested system not only for Japanese crafting but also for worldwide design industries.

ALIFE: A multiagent computing paradigm for constraint satisfaction problems

This paper presents a new approach to solving N-queen problems, which involves a model of distributed autonomous agents with artificial life (ALIFE) and a method of representing N-queen constraints in an agent environment. The distributed agents locally interact with their living environment, i.e, a chessboard, and execute their reactive behaviors by applying their behavioral rules for randomized motion, least-conflict position searching, and cooperating with other agents, etc. The agent-based N-queen problem solving system evolves through selection and contest, in which some agents will die or be eaten if their moving strategies are less effective than others. The experimental results have shown that this system is capable of solving large-scale N-queen problems. This paper also provides a model of ALIFE agents for solving general CSPs.

Intrusion detection research has been conducted for nearly 20 years but still remains in its infancy. The existing intrusion detection system architectures have a number of problems that limit their configurability, scalability, and efficiency. This paper first discusses the threats to networked computer systems, and introduces the intrusion detection mechanisms and agent technologies. On the basis of the above discussion, a multi-agent based intrusion detection architecture for LAN is proposed. This architecture can be easily extended and maintained, supporting distributed and intelligent intrusion detection. In addition, it can enhance the whole system's detection efficiency greatly.

The process of the development of the network computing towards the 21(st) century is explained. In this, it is stressed the needs of the society is the most important motive force to the development of the future technology. In order to make clear the key technologies required for the development of the network computing, the logical model of the system is represented by the six layers model and the key technologies corresponding to each layer are introduced. For the future development of the information society, the importance and the technologies concerning on the thin computers and the new platform constructed by the unification of the Internet and mobile communication are also discussed. It is explained mobile Internet will create new nomadic culture constructing a new social model.

There are many research papers concerning the performance of Assured Forwarding (AF) service in a single Differentiated Services domain network. However, few works have dealt with the performance evaluation of architectures that are based on interconnected AF service domains. The paper presents a simulation based performance study of the AF service in a multi-DS domain network architecture. This was motivated by the fact that in the real world, communication systems are often composed of many interconnected domains. We also give a comparison of the performance of AF service in single- versus multi-DS domain networks.

With the evolution of the global information infrastructure, service providers will need to provide effective and adaptive resource management mechanisms that can serve more concurrent clients and deal with applications that exhibit quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Flexible, scalable and customizable middleware can be used as an enabling technology for next-generation systems that adhere to the QoS requirements of applications that execute in highly dynamic distributed environments. To enable application-aware resource management, we are developing a customizable and composable middleware framework called CompOSE|Q (Composable Open Software Environment with QoS), based on a reflective meta-model. In this paper, we describe the architecture and runtime environment for CompOSE|Q and briefly assess the performance overhead of the additional flexibility. We also illustrate how flexible communication mechanisms can be supported efficiently in the CompOSE|Q framework.

This paper considers the location tracking problem in PCS networks. How a solution to this problem performs in fact highly, depends on the mobility patterns of users. In this paper we propose a new traveling salesman mobility (TSM) model, in the hope of catching the mobility patterns of a large group of users. The TSM model is characterized by features of "stop-or-move", "infrequent transition" "memory of roaming direction", and "oblivious in different moves". Then a location tracking strategy based on this TSM model is developed. The scheme only needs to keep very little information for each user. Analyses and simulations are provided, which show that the strategy is very prospective.

This paper presents the design of a communication state transfer protocol to support process migration in a dynamic, distributed computing environment. In our design, processes in distributed computation communicate one another via message passing and are migration-enabled. Due to mobility, mechanisms to maintain reliability and correctness of data communication are needed. Following an event-based approach, Such mechanisms are derived to handle various communication situations when a process migrates. These mechanisms collectively preserve the semantics of the communication and support efficient communication state transfer.

In an age where wirelessly networked appliances and devices are becoming commonplace, there is a necessity for connecting them to work together for a mobile user. The design outlined in the paper provides an infrastructure and communication protocol for providing 'smart' services to these mobile devices. This flexible framework allows any medium to be used for communication between the system and the portable device, including infra-red, and BlueTooth. Using Extensible Markup Language (XML) for information passing, gives the system a uniform and easily adaptable interface. We explain our trade-offs in implementation and through experiments we show that the design is feasible and that it indeed provides a flexible structure for providing services. Centaurus provides a uniform infrastructure for heterogeneous services, both hardware and software services, to be made available to the users everywhere where they are needed.

Self-stabilizing distributed algorithms exhibit interesting analogies with the stabilizing feedback systems that are used in various engineering domains. In this paper, we show, with E.W. Dijkstra's (1974) token-ring algorithm for mutual exclusion serving as an example, that methodologies from control theory, e.g. Lyapunov's "second method", can be used to more easily and systematically prove the self-stabilization property of distributed algorithms.
