By the end of the next decade, computers will not be just information gatherers who return reams of keyword-related information. Instead computers will become mobile intelligent helpers who will truly understand entire problems and provide just the right information to solve them. What capabilities will be needed to realize such advanced systems? This paper projects technology advances and assesses the impact such systems might have on future decision-makers. The scenarios and ideas presented by the panelists will provide a reasonable starting point for discussion and solicitation of alternative views.

Telecom standby power systems being installed or modernized today primarily use VRLA batteries. Many customers ask for diagnostic and monitoring tools, and some sophisticated users want battery monitoring and diagnostic systems that also predict (1) available support time during an ongoing discharge, and (2) remaining battery life prior to replacement. GNB has found only one monitoring system that is comprehensive in monitoring, analyzing and predicting battery data. The "intelligent monitoring system", or IMS, is a low-cost universal battery and power monitoring system suitable for implementation across the network. IMS monitors and reports on actual events, which the power system owner wishes to know about, or other events that (from a battery technology point of view) may affect the condition of the installation. Such real-time expert-based systems, which utilize the knowledge of many parameters in data analysis, have the best prospect of satisfying the demands of the more sophisticated VRLA customers for diagnostic and predictive capability.

A mobile ad-hoc network is composed of only mobile nodes, which are distributed dynamically, without any wired backbone or centralized entities. Each terminal in the mobile ad-hoc network also has the role of the router, but the frequent changes of the terminal positions induce a waste of time, energy and computing power for updating the routing table with the paging, and also may provoke a call dropping. To overcome this problem, we propose a new routing scheme based on the terminal mobility in mobile ad-hoc networks. In the proposed scheme, terminals are classified into low-mobility terminals and high-mobility terminals. To prevent the frequent update of the routing table, only the low-mobility terminal can be the routing terminal in the proposed scheme. The performances of the proposed scheme and conventional scheme are simulated. The numerical results show that the mean call dropping time in the proposed scheme are much lower than that in the other conventional schemes.

Each cell has a fixed base station in traditional mobile networks. But, in a virtual cellular network (VCN), the fixed base stations are replaced by mobile base station. Thus, the mobile host-mobile base station communication link is wireless and the mobile base station-mobile base station communication link is also wireless. Due to the mobility of base stations, the co-channel interference range changes with time. As result, the channel reuse pattern is highly dynamic. Also, the link failure possibility is high. In previous works, although a cold cell turns into hot cell in a minute, a cold cell lends its own channels to current other hot cells. Thus, the lending cold cell becomes hot cell and borrows the request channels from other cold cells redundantly. We solve the problem of redundant borrowing using two thresholds and statistical analysis based on historic traffic information. Thus, our scheme supports fault-tolerant channel assignment in VCN.

To satisfy this demand, optoelectronics and material technologies will be of great importance. In this paper, we discuss the future direction and prospects for optoelectronics technologies, including the "optoelectronics technology road map", which covers telecommunication and memory technologies. We examine the role of device and material technologies in realizing the goal of the telecommunications network for the "wealthy society" of the 21st century.

This paper introduces a new concept and model for building complex ATE systems. The underlying principles were discovered over several years but were driven home by the difficulty found in modernizing a legacy test system. The result of this effort produced a solution that provided answers to the following three questions: (1) How to achieve asset interchangeability in complex test and measurement systems; (2) How to place test system software in a modular component form that can be reused in different ATE or desk top environments, and (3) How to apply new software technologies in distributed computing to ATE systems.

The food industry is one of the world's most dynamic economic sectors. Demand for affordable, safe, and convenient food products continues to outpace the abilities of many countries to respond. As the food industry continues to grow, there is increasing pressures to enhance production and processing efficiency while also providing better control over food safety, product quality, and product diversity. These seemingly competing challenges offer a number of new opportunities for the use of mechatronics, particularly in the area of food processing. Most food processing operations today make extensive use of more conventional `fixed' automation technologies. These technologies are designed to perform a single function, to be low in cost, and to mass deliver product. Their key selling point is their ability to lower or even totally eliminate labor costs. Their primary detractions are their inability to respond to product variability or to perform multiple or complex processing activities. However, with growing market pressures to deliver a greater array of value added products, coupled with increasing concern over worker availability, worker safety, and product safety, many food processing companies are focusing their attentions on more `intelligent' automation technologies. These technologies take advantage of the growing power and affordability of computing platforms and an expanding array of electronic sensors and product manipulators. They are capable of delivering performances that are more flexible and discriminating than today's systems. This paper discusses these driving forces in greater detail and addresses some of the more promising forms of `intelligent' automation technologies starting to appear in food processing operations.

This article presents a new generation in parallel processing architecture for real-time image processing. The approach is implemented in a real time image processor chip, called the Xium(TM)-2, based on combining a fully associative array which provides the parallel engine with a serial RISC core on the same die. The architecture is fully programmable and can be programmed to implement a wide range of color image processing, computer vision and media processing functions in real time. The associative part of the chip is based on patented pending methodology of Associative computing Ltd. (ACL), which condenses 2048 associative processors, each of 128 ''intelligent'' bits. Each bit can be a processing bit or st memory bit. At only 33 Mhz and 0.6 micron manufacturing technology process, the chip has It computational power of 3 Billion ALU operations per second and 66 Billion string search operations per second. The fully programmable nature of the Xium(TM)-2 chip enables developers to use ACL tools to write their own proprietary algorithms combined with existing image processing and analysis functions from ACL's extended set of libraries.
