A distributed environment for cooperative software (DECS) provides a flexible and extensible platform for the development and execution of cooperative software. It takes the advantages of object-oriented technology and emphasizes composition as the basis for developing large distributed system from reusable components. In this paper, we give an overview of DECS, present the compositional approach, and then describe the design and implementation of DECS run-time system.

Manufacturing systems are experiencing several trends which are increasing the importance of the control system as a component of the overall manufacturing system. Among these trends are increased levels of automation, increasing differentiation and customization of products, and increased demands on system performance. A control system must coordinate the various activities of a manufacturing operation so that requirements and performance goals are met. Most manufacturing control systems are distributed in nature and incorporate both computerized controllers and human operators. There are few generic modeling approaches, however, which represent interactions between these manufacturing control entities. This research proposes a modeling approach which synthesizes a generic architecture for modeling computerized manufacturing control and the operator function model (OFM), a methodology to model operator actions and tasks in complex systems. This approach is based on an underlying client-server representation and has the potential to facilitate design and prototyping of manufacturing control systems.

This paper presents a genetic algorithm (GA) for stochastic environments and its application to dynamic load balancing in distributed systems. We have proposed a stochastic genetic algorithm (stGA) which has an evaluation mechanism for fitness values based on the reinforcement learning in order to adapt to stochastic environments. We apply the stGA to the decision phase of task migration requests in dynamic load balancing, and we realize a task distribution system based on the stGA in a local area network which consists of UNIX workstations.

distributed problem solving(DPS) is a field of distributed artificial intelligence. In a DPS system, a problem is solved by a team of cooperating intelligent agents, each intelligent agent having partial data and knowledge of the problem and the problem solving environment. A DPS system is a discrete event system. In the problem solving process, an intelligent agent randomly receives and processes messages from the outside and other intelligent agent; it also unpredictably activates knowledge sources in itself. This paper proposes a DPS framework based on DEVS formalism specifying discrete event systems. The framework consists of two components, AGENT and WHITEBOARD. The AGENT maintains several problem-solving plans. It is able to solve many problems concurrently. The WHITEBOARD keeps capability and loading factors of the AGENT and distributes messages during the solving process. For verifying the proposed framework, an example system with three intelligent agents was examined. The results show that the DPS framework concurrently solves problems, and each AGENT maintains an appropriate load.

Graphical user interfaces represent a potential barrier for blind computer users. In particular the mouse pointing device is difficult to adapt to non-visual interaction. An adaptation was developed which created an auditory space based on the metaphor of the cursor as microphone. Experiments carried out suggest that-though this auditory interaction will never rival the efficiency of visual interaction-it would be viable for some operations.

Management of information to ensure that it is current and available when and where needed in appropriate combinations is a challenging problem in information management. Enterprise-wide computer networks have contributed greatly to the solution of this problem. However, systematic methodologies are lacking for integrating information based on the context and need, and the creation and maintenance of distributed databases in which interesting and useful relationships are identified, encoded, and maintained to keep pace with the rapid changes across the entire enterprise. In this paper, we outline the conceptual background of our research concerned with the semantics and timeliness of information, and the development and use of interfaces that depend on the context. A framework to help analyze and integrate information for specific sets of tasks and functions in a timely manner, and present in a form most suitable for the task at hand is under development. A prototype for the information system is being built.

We develop an indexing scheme for medical images. In general, for a given medical image, there is one object which is clinically important amongst the rest. We name this object the dominant object. Our proposed index is composed of three parts: (1) the dominant objects in images are standardized; (2) each image will have its own quadtree constructed which depends on the color composition and the color variation in the image; and (3) an R-tree that supports the retrieval of color images. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the index developed, we use images of skin lesions as the image data. Our initial experiments gives promising results for image retrieval.

We present a memory-based planning model. The key component in the memory of the system is the collection of different skeletons of plan operators. A packaging hierarchy plays the key role in construction of a skeleton. A skeleton itself is made up of hierarchically organized plan operators and corresponds to a class of plans. This approach of memory organization differs from existing case-based approaches in which an indexing hierarchy plays the key role in organizing the plans in memory. Modification knowledge plays an important role in plan construction and is distributed over plan operators. A plan is created in a hierarchical fashion by activating the suitable skeleton and performing appropriate modifications during expansion. The model has been implemented in the domain of cooking vegetables.

This paper presents the development of a theoretical model for parallel implementation of backpropagation (BP) neural networks using the "network parallelism" paradigm. The case where the number of nodes in each layer is equally distributed among the processors is considered. The model is developed for a homogeneous array of message passing processors with only local memory. The developed model predicts the training time for a given neural network without having to set up the hardware and run the experiments. The accuracy of the model is verified by comparing the predicted training time using the theoretical model with the actual experimental values for the case of an array of T805 transputers connected in a ring topology for benchmark neural network problems like the Encoder and Nettalk.

In this study the theory of queueing models has been applied to design an appropriate service facility for the Campbelltown hospital emergency service in order to minimise patients waiting time and the associated running cost. Thus the ultimate goal is to optimize the available resources. A computer program is developed to model the distributions of arrival time, waiting time and service time of the system and to estimate their parameters. These parameters are then used to develop a simulation algorithm that estimates the average waiting time for other parametric changes such as arrival rate and the number of servers in the system. Observing how these parametric changes will effect the expected waiting time of the patients and the expected idle time of the doctors this program can be used to design a more efficient system. Hence this will provide a valuable tool for the managers and doctors in scheduling, in order to optimize the efficiency of the emergency service.
