This paper investigates the use of neural networks in the control of highly nonlinear systems. Online and off line control of a cart balancing a flexible pole under its first mode of vibration using neural networks is presented. Backpropagation and Kohonen's self-organizing map have been used as neural network examples. The networks learned from a set of training data derived from a real system and were initially tested against a computer simulation of the derived dynamics of the flexible pole-cart balancing system and then applied to the real system.

The AI research topics in negotiation can be distinguished into three major categories: AI-based negotiation support system (NSS), game-theory-based negotiation and metaphor-based negotiation. This paper focuses on metaphor-based negotiation by which I mean a category of distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) problem-solving approaches (or computational models) that mimic human negotiation processes in some aspects. Although there has been a resurgence of interest in metaphor-based negotiation, an issue is still been questioned by us: what is negotiation. So far, there has been no formalized definition found. This paper is therefore aimed at bringing this issue into discussion. Taking a deliberately designed scenario-cake-sharing as an example, a formalized definition of negotiation is given and a formalism of modelling metaphor-based negotiation is presented finally. In the definition, the emphasis is on the content of information that will be exchanged during negotiation. The content consists of an agreement and an explanation which are produced according to agent's complete knowledge about itself and incomplete knowledge about others. The formalism based on this definition is given, which provided a more specific view about how metaphor-based negotiation is modelled according to the definition.

Visual prosthesis for the retinally blind is an area of research which is seeing some advances and progress. Advances in the areas of image processing, neuro-morphology of vision, microelectronic engineering and high speed computing has contributed to significant progress in this area. Research using specific patterns of electrical stimulation may enable physicians to restore sight to the blind. Other disciplines provide examples of how electrical stimulation can solve other problems for example the cochlear implants stimulate spinal ganglion cells of the auditory nerves. On the one hand issues of signal and image processing in the biological system are not yet fully understood while on the other hand there is the implant problem which needs to be addressed. In this paper an attempt has been made to point out the various difficulties, unsolved problems and propose solutions to some of them. A prototype of the artificial retina is described. Work under progress in the "Signal Processing and intelligent Systems Research Laboratory, Faculty of Science and technology, Griffith University" is described.

A public domain optical character recognition (OCR) system has been developed by the National Institute of standards and technology (NIst) to provide a baseline of performance on off-line handwriting recognition from forms. The system's source code, training data, and performance assessment tools are all publicly available. The system recognizes the handprint written on handwriting sample forms as distributed on the CD-ROM, NIst Special Database 19. The public domain package contains a number of significant contributions to OCR technology, including an optimized probabilistic neural network classifier that operates a factor of 20 times faster than traditional software implementations of this algorithm. The modular design of the software makes it useful for training and testing set validation, multiple system voting schemes, and component evaluation and comparison. As an example, the OCR results from two versions of the recognition system are presented and analyzed.

This paper introduces an improved method for optimizing parameters of an neural network based fuzzy diagnosis module. With the specific structure of a conventional fuzzy system the diagnosis module is used for the linguistic qualification of continuous signals to detect faulty components in technical processes. The design process of the module structure itself is based on numerical methods applied for neural networks. Training data indicating various system states delivered by a distributed continuous simulator are used to set up the initial module network structure. The proposed multistep parameter learning method enables fast adaptation of the diagnosis module parameters by avoiding mutual influences of parameters during the learning phase and consideration of individual parameter learning characteristics.

This paper addresses the problem of semantic support for multimedia information systems. The problem has become very important in the "infotainment" environment, which utilizes very large amounts of bitstream data. This voice, audio, picture, video, text etc., data has a very low semantic meta-information content. Further, the paper presents the Multimedia Information System (MMIS) which contains semantic support for efficient navigation in the hypermedia knowledge base. This system uses semantic nets as a formalized basis for knowledge representation of collected heterogeneous data.

This paper presents a point location approach in 3D structured grid vector field. The use of this approach in streamline and stream surface generation is discussed. Many existing methods are based on regular grid field. Constructing streamlines and stream surface in structured grid field is more complicated. The main difficulties are the location of an arbitrary point and the interpolation in irregular cells. We use structured-point to represent the position of a point and the relationship with its surrounding faces. The point location is made directly in physical space. This method does not need extra memory expense and preprocessing. The implementation and results are also discussed.

This paper discusses how to use object-oriented technology and Petri nets for the modeling of military maneuver theory. Most military theories involve both concurrent processing units and discrete event systems. These can be best modeled with Petri nets. The maneuver theory includes preemption, dislocation, and disruption. Among them, dislocation plays a central role. The authors use Petri nets to model the dislocation strategy and, further, the combined-arms theory, which is an extension of the dislocation theory. Each attacking, moving, and defending unit is modeled as an object whose operation is represented as a subnet. Simulation can also be done with the appropriate integration of these Petri net submodels.

Research in distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) has focused upon agents' interaction in multiagent systems. This paper presents a text understanding oriented multiagent dynamic interaction testbed (TUMIT): the theoretic framework based upon game theory, the free-market-like system architecture, and experimentation on TUMIT. Unlike other DAI testbeds, TUMIT views different text understanding (TU) methods as different "computational resources", and makes agents choose different TU paths and computational resources according to the resource information on the "bulletins" in their host-computer. This makes TUMIT like a "free market". We show theoretically and experimentally that if agents use multilevel of "history information", their behavior will tend to converge to a Nash equilibrium situation; and that if agents use "recall-forget" strategy on "history information", the convergence call be accelerated and the agents can acclimate themselves to changed environment. Compared with other DAI testbeds, TUMIT is more distributed, and the agents in TUMIT are more adaptive to the dynamic environment.

This paper describes the detection of artificially planted markers in intraoperative stereo-images. The objective was to detect these markers and match them between stereo-images so that camera calibration could be used to reconstruct their location and orientation in three dimensions. As the markers were rigidly attached to vertebrae, this allowed surgeons to monitor and record corrections made to scoliotic spines during surgery. A model-based system with multiple templates was implemented for feature detection. The three aspects of template matching-similarity measures, template design and decision criteria were investigated. This included an assessment of different cross-correlation measures. Templates, designed using two image properties-gray levels and edges, were organised in a tree structure for each property. Results and accuracy of detection on real operating room images are presented.
