This study explores the integration of machine learning (ML) technologies in precision agriculture, with a specific focus on the application of drones equipped with advanced sensors. The core of this research lies in the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to facilitate real-time identification and classification of key agricultural factors, particularly crop health. In this work, YOLOv8 is trained on annotated datasets comprising both RGB and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images and its performance was compared with Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. The study reveals that YOLOv8 exhibits superior performance compared to SVM for both types of images, achieving an average accuracy rate of 86.5%. This highlights the pivotal role of integrating drone technology and sensory vision in revolutionizing precision agriculture, offering valuable insights into the future of smart cities and sustainable farming, especially in areas with limited water resources.

The paper provides an overview of advancements in bird detection and recognition systems using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI). It highlights the increasing adoption of wind farms amid rising electricity demand, underscoring their environmental impact on avian species. To address these ecological challenges, the development of bird recognition solutions is crucial. The paper analyzes various techniques, including radar systems, sound recognition, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), electromagnetic detection, YOLOv5, and color segmentation, discussing their features, computational costs, and constraints. It concludes that while deep learning models offer superior results, they need a balance between accuracy and speed, alongside training with large and representative datasets. Ultimately, the paper aims to contribute to efforts aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of wind farms on bird populations through advanced technologies. Additionally, through this paper we intend to shed light over the state of the art on bird detection systems and provide insights that intends to solve some of these drawbacks.

We consider the problem of finding a maximum independent set (MaxIS) of chordal graphs using mobile agents. Suppose n agents are initially placed arbitrarily on the nodes of an n-node chordal graph G = (V, E). Agents need to find a maximum independent set M of G such that each node of M is occupied by at least one agent. Also, each of the n agents must know whether its occupied node is a part of M or not. starting from both rooted and arbitrary initial configuration, we provide distributed algorithms for n mobile agents having O(log n) memory each to compute the MaxIS of G in O(mnlog Delta) time, where m denotes the number of edges in G and Delta is the maximum degree of the graph. Agents do not need prior knowledge of any parameters if the initial configuration is rooted. For arbitrary initial configuration, agents need to know few global parameters beforehand. We further show that using a similar approach it is possible to find the maximum clique in chordal graphs and color any chordal graph with the minimum number of colors. We also provide a dynamic programming-based approach to solve the MaxIS finding problem in trees in O(n) time.

This study delves into enhancing energy consumption forecasting in smart buildings by analyzing the implications of different contextual detection strategies, employing both K-Means and Fuzzy C-Means clustering techniques. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset from various sensors, the research segments power usage data to uncover distinct consumption patterns, extracted from user's behavior. A suite of seven machine learning forecasting algorithms undergoes evaluation, guided by two distinct methodologies: crafting specialized models for individual clusters and embedding contextual data as features within an integrated model. To perform the selection of the most suitable algorithm for each approach and cluster, an automated machine learning process is utilized, streamlining the optimization and comparison process. Moreover, the study explores the influence of soft clustering in providing nuanced, probabilistic cluster memberships and their impact on forecasting accuracy. A baseline scenario, devoid of contextual considerations, serves as a benchmark for comparison, allowing for a clear evaluation of the benefits introduced by integrating context into predictive models. The research aims to identify the optimal contextual detection strategy, considering the unique advantages of soft and hard clustering, to significantly improve energy consumption forecasts.

Leader election is a critical and extensively studied problem in distributed computing. This paper introduces the study of leader election using mobile agents. Consider n agents initially placed arbitrarily on the nodes of an arbitrary, n-node, m-edge graph G. These agents move autonomously across the nodes of G and elect one agent as the leader such that the leader is aware of its status as the leader, and the other agents know they are not the leader. The goal is to minimize both time and memory usage. We study the leader election problem in a synchronous setting where each agent performs operations simultaneously with the others, allowing us to measure time complexity in terms of rounds. We assume that the agents have prior knowledge of the number of nodes n and the maximum degree of the graph Delta. We first elect a leader deterministically in O(n log(2) n + D Delta log n) rounds with each agent using O(log n) bits of memory, where D is the diameter of the graph. Leveraging this leader election result, we then present a deterministic algorithm for constructing a minimum spanning tree of G in O(m+ n log n) rounds, with each agent using O(Delta log n) bits of memory. Finally, using the same leader election result, we improve time and memory bounds for other key distributed graph problems, including gathering, maximal independent set, and minimal dominating set. For all the aforementioned problems, our algorithms remain memory-optimal.

This paper investigates rapid cooperative guidance with finite time convergence in the context of missile attacks. Cooperative guidance systems play a crucial role in coordinating multiple missiles toward a common target efficiently in three-dimensional space. The missiles are assumed to be only able to exchange the time-to-go information with the neighbors based on an undirected communication network. A distributed guidance law called finite-time rapid cooperative guidance (Fit-RCG) is proposed. A nonlinear term is designed in Fit-RCG to ensure a faster convergence rate, and the finite time convergence is proved by using tools from graph theory and Lyapunov theory. Very recently, a memory-efficient version (called MeZO) of simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA), one well-established zeroth-order optimizer from the automatic control community, has shown competitive fine-tuning performance on large language models (LLMs) with billions of weights under the limited memory of a single GPU, which often hinders the direct usage of the standard backpropagation (BP) update. Furthermore, population-based evolutionary methods (such as evolution strategies from OpenAI and population-based training from DeepMind) have shown a promising direction to improving and scaling up various large-scale AI systems via efficiently utilizing increasingly available distributed computing resources, owing to their relatively simple yet efficient data and control flows. In this paper, we propose a population-based SPSA for fine-tuning LLMs with non-differentiable objective functions. Specifically, our proposed method combines the desirable exploration ability of distributed population-based evolutionary methods with the powerful exploitation ability of SPSA in the modern distributed computing environment wherein the efficient implementation of BP is still challenging because of its complex dependencies in forward-pass and backward-pass information flows. Simulation experiments on a set of challenging (non-differentiable) natural language process tasks empirically validate the potential of our method on fine-tuning even in a relatively small-scale distributed computing scenario. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has provided new opportunities for constructing smart leisure venue management systems. This paper proposes an IoT-based intelligent leisure venue management system, employing a layered architectural design that includes data acquisition, data analysis, intelligent decision-making, and application service layers. The data acquisition layer collects environmental and user behavior data through distributed sensor networks and RFID technology. The data analysis layer utilizes big data processing techniques to achieve real-time data fusion and cleansing. The intelligent decision-making layer optimizes venue operations using reinforcement learning algorithms, while the application service layer offers personalized services and visual interfaces to users and managers. Experimental results demonstrate that the system excels in data acquisition accuracy, real-time processing capability, visitor flow prediction accuracy, and energy consumption optimization, effectively enhancing venue operational efficiency and user satisfaction. The conclusion highlights that the system has room for improvement in handling peak period visitor statistics. Future work will focus on optimizing algorithms and enhancing system scalability to further improve overall performance. © 2025 The Authors.

An increase in the elderly population has led to a growing demand for constant health care. Remote monitoring of seniors aims to provide more effective care and promote patient independence, whether they live in residential homes, or their own homes supported by a domiciliary care service. It encompasses several issues present in their lives that may benefit from being assisted and monitored remotely. There are many successful studies and products focused on one of these issues, but there are no systems, to the best of our knowledge, that serve as a broad remote monitoring solution for multiple of these topics simultaneously. This paper proposes an architecture for an intelligent health monitoring ecosystem to interact with these various aspects of the elderly’s daily life, including monitoring of vital signs, movement and medication intake, detection of falls, sleep quality analysis, access control, and patient–caregiver communication. This solution will make use of wearables and medication dispensers, and it will securely store all patient-related information into an HL7 FHIR standardized database, from where machine learning models can import data for predicting important information and generating alerts when necessary. Next steps involve the development of this proposed system and testing it with elderly volunteers living in a residential home or subscribed to its domiciliary care services. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Aiming at the problem of frequent earthquakes and other natural disasters, based on the research on distributed optical fiber sensing technology and the sensing principle and basic theory of Michelson optical fiber interferometer, a vector seismic sensor is designed. The sensitive part of the optical fiber vibration sensor is mainly composed of elastic sheets, The sensor is composed of mass block, ring and sensing fiber element, and the strain effect analysis of the sensor shows that the composite material is an ideal material for the vibrating sheet, which greatly improves the sensitivity of the system and reduces the system error. The overall scheme of the system is designed, and the signal generator is used to simulate the vibration generation. The signal amplitude is 1 and the frequency is 300Hz and 500Hz respectively. Through multiple experiments and analysis of the experimental results, it is shown that the detection sensitivity a is 0.08g and 0.3g respectively. the waveform of the vibration signal is basically consistent with the signal amplitude detected by the sensor, and has a good frequency response, which can be used for seismic wave detection. © 2025 The Authors.
