This paper introduces a novel competitive mechanism into differential evolution (DE), presenting an effective DE variant named competitive DE (CDE). CDE features a simple yet efficient mutation strategy: DE/winner-to-best/1. Essentially, the proposed DE/winner-to-best/1 strategy can be recognized as an intelligent integration of the existing mutation strategies of DE/rand-to-best/1 and DE/cur-to-best/1. The incorporation of DE/winner-to-best/1 and the competitive mechanism provide new avenues for advancing DE techniques. Moreover, in CDE, the scaling factor F and mutation rate Cr are determined by a random number generator following a normal distribution, as suggested by previous research. To investigate the performance of the proposed CDE, comprehensive numerical experiments are conducted on CEC2017 and engineering simulation optimization tasks, with CMA-ES, JADE, and other state-of-the-art optimizers and DE variants employed as competitor algorithms. The experimental results and statistical analyses highlight the promising potential of CDE as an alternative optimizer for addressing diverse optimization challenges. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In distributed large-scale intelligent computing, efficient collaboration between the cloud and edge devices is essential to provide rapid data access for a vast number of users, which is crucial for optimal data storage services. The edge servers are utilized to meet the data access requirements of adjacent group users. Numerous data auditing schemes for cloud computing have been proposed to protect user data integrity and avoid the threat of data leakage, loss, or tampering. However, secure cloud-edge storage of group users remains to be further studied. This paper proposes a novel blockchain-assisted blinded data auditing scheme for cloud-edge systems. Firstly, blockchain technology is utilized to monitor the activities of a semi-trusted third-party auditor (TPA). Secondly, user identifiers are utilized to trace the malicious behaviors in the systems. In addition, a data blinding algorithm is utilized to ensure that the raw data is unavailable to a curious TPA. Both security analysis and performance assessment demonstrate that this scheme conducts data auditing for cloud-edge systems with reliability and efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Retired battery laddering is an effective means to maximize the value of batteries. Targeting poor consistency of retired batteries, combining the comprehensive characteristics of discharge depth, charging capacity, open-circuit voltage and charge/discharge curves, a multi-stage sorting method for retired batteries is proposed. In the first stage, outliers are removed using the DBSCAN algorithm;In the second stage, the depth of discharge, open-circuit voltage and charging capacity are used as static features, and the K-means algorithm is used for clustering to realize the coarse sorting of retired battery;In the third stage, the ohmic internal resistance of different SOCs under HPPC conditions is used as a dynamic feature, and the t-distributed stochastic Neighbor Embedding(t-SNE) is used for dimensionality reduction, and the category labels of retired batteries are obtained through clustering computation to realize the segmentation of retired batteries for selection. Finally, experiments were conducted using 60 retired batteries, and the consistency of the sorted retired batteries was significantly improved. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The advent of IoT has brought in a huge amount of data that is exponentially growing every second. This seemingly growing data has paved the way to rethink on various technologies to capture the data and analyze it properly. Such huge data is the fuel for various analytics and intelligent systems like machine learning and deep learning applications. The deployment of machine learning and deep learning intelligence across the analytical network takes place in the central data system (cloud servers) which is a very expensive challenge in terms of time, money, data privacy. But the application of such intelligence at the edge computing, which is a new paradigm of the cloud-enabled network, has solved the problem by offering high security and reliability. Unlike Cloud computing, edge computing is a decentralized, distributed architecture where analytics and insight happens near or at the data source itself that solves the expensive challenges mentioned above. This paper describes the network of edge computing and its variance from cloud computing, edge architecture, and diverse applications of machine learning algorithms and deep learning framework deployed at the edge network for intelligent analytics.

Data is predicted to transform the 21st century, fuelled by an exponential growth in the amount of data captured, generated and archived. Traditional high performance machines are optimized for numerical computing rather than IO performance or for supporting large memory applications. This paper discusses a new machine, called FlashLite, which addresses these challenges. The paper describes the motivation for the design, and discusses some driving application themes.

The distributed network control in software-defined networking is greatly challenged by the design demands of evolving a running distributed control plane (DCP), and by the complexity of handling the control state dynamics. In this paper, we propose RIFFLE to address the problem using a distributed network operating system approach. RIFFLE enables the evolvability of control states of DCP deployed on a global scale. RIFFLE handles spatial and temporal dynamics that occur when updating and migrating the distributed control states, which overcomes the critical barrier to the evolvability. It fills the gap by enabling temporal reconfigurability in DCP. Moreover, RIFFLE reduces the complexities of building and maintaining network control services in DCP by enabling componentization and abstracting the underlying network dynamics. We evaluated the prototype RIFFLE through experiments running in PlanetLab. The results show that the prototype scales well for 135 nodes. We also validate that RIFFLE ensures the continuity and low content request delay for the supported the information-centric network supported during cache update periods owing to the enabled evolvability.

The expansion of Information and Communication technology has prompted take-up in advanced education. 21st century learning situations are continually advancing because of uncommon pace of technological developments. The growing use of these learning environments has resultant increase in the generation of electronic waste. The growing number of populace in the developing countries with disposable income has attracted investments in information and communication technology into their countries. Institutions of higher education are unlikely to be left behind. The pervasiveness of electronic gadgets has led to increase in the generation of electronic waste. Electronic waste is a global concern due to its effects on human health and the environment. the aim of this narrative review paper is to explore the potential of 21st century learning environments in creating awareness about electronic waste negative effects on the environment. Findings reveal that developing countries know little about the harmful results of electronic waste on the environment and wellbeing. Based on the findings, therefore this study suggests that 21st century learning environments are the best method to combat electronic waste illiteracy in the developing countries.

This paper presents a functional architecture for controlling and managing platoons of vehicles assisted by a cloud computing platform for passenger vehicles in mixed traffic scenarios. The architecture modules are distributed in the three separate logical layers suggested by the on-going CARMA (Cloud-Assisted Real-time Methods for Autonomy) research project which aims to develop and test cooperative automated driving technologies and distributed control systems. The architecture also exploits the potential of the CARMA platform both in terms of computing and data sharing.

In this paper, a convex polygon containment problem is studied: whether a given convex polygon P can be translated to fit inside another fixed convex polygon Q. An O(pq log q) time algorithm is presented for solving such a problem, where p and q are the numbers of vertices of P and Q. In addition, by utilizing the existence algorithm, it takes O(pq log q) time to find the set of all placements of P that fit inside Q.
