Computational neuroscience is interdisciplinary and plays an essential role in facilitating the development of cognitive neuroscience and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). To explore the computational efficiency of Spiking Neural Network (SNN) on a computational hardware platform, we deploy SNN on the Xilinx Zynq7 Zedboard Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Specifically, we use multi-compartmental Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) neuron model to construct neural circuits via C++ code and adopt a biologically plausible calcium concentration-based plasticity model as the learning rule of SNN. Our experimental results show that the FPGA platform can support parallel computation of the multi-compartment HH model with synaptic plasticity. Compared to other methods, FPGA-based computing has a significant speed advantage, suggesting that FPGA can be a good choice for implementing brain-inspired computation.

The concept of stream data processing is becoming challenging in most business sectors where try to improve their operational efficiency by deriving valuable information from unstructured, yet, contentiously generated high volume raw data in an expected time spans. A modern streamlined data processing platform is required to execute analytical pipelines over a continues flow of data-items that might arrive in a high rate. In most cases, the platform is also expected to dynamically adapt to dynamic characteristics of the incoming traffic rates and the ever-changing condition of underlying computational resources while fulfill the tight latency constraints imposed by the end-users. Apache storm has emerged as an important open source technology for performing stream processing with very tight latency constraints over a cluster of computing nodes. To increase the overall resource utilization, however, the service provider might be tempted to use a consolidation strategy to pack as many applications as possible in a (cloud-centric) cluster with limited number of working nodes. However, collocated applications can negatively compete with each other, for obtaining the resource capacity in a shared platform that, in turn, the result may lead to a severe performance degradation among all running applications. The main objective of this work is to develop an elastic solution in a modern stream processing ecosystem, for addressing the shared resource contention problem among collocated applications. We propose a mechanism, based on design principles of Model Predictive Control theory, for coping with the extreme conditions in which the collocated analytical applications have different quality of service (QoS) levels while the shared-resource interference is considered as a key performance limiting parameter. Educational institutions often struggle to identify what is the best pedagogical approach to engaging students with academic integrity content. As student plagiarism and cheating frequently occur, new strategies are needed to address this challenge in educational settings. The Canadian academic integrity mobile technology project developed one digital strategy, Integrity Matters, to enhance student academic integrity knowledge and understanding using an innovative pedagogical approach. Best strategies, from 774 undergraduate student users perspective, for accessing, delivering, assessing and learning this information with mobile technology (m-learning) are explored. Following completion of the six lessons and subsequent quizzes, academic integrity knowledge increased for the research study participants in engineering, math, computer science, and arts faculties. The Integrity Matters open access trilingual mobile application (available in Android and iOS) can be readily adopted across post-secondary colleges and universities and adapted to meet institutional priority needs.

With people moving to cities for permanent settlements, there has been a rapid rise in urbanization worldwide. To accommodate such a vast number of citizens and provide them with quality life, the existing infrastructure of the cities requires transitioning into a more intelligent and safer environment. Hence, the aim of smart cities is to utilize the resources in order to offer a healthy and sustainable habitat to its citizens. Due to the increased urbanization;two significant issues which exist and are likely to persist as the cities grow are: the constant increase in transportation and the deterioration of environment as it’s result. The ever-growing number of on-road vehicles eventually leads to increased emissions, which are detrimental to the environment and undermine the quality of life in the cities. This paper aims to explore Internet of Things-driven solutions to achieve sustainable mobility and to provide cleaner environment in smart cities. The implementation of intelligent services in smart cities is inextricably intertwined with the Internet of Things. Contemporary information and communication technology (ICT) and its applications are not only becoming an integral part of the everyday life of our society but also standard in most of the schools across the globe. Furthermore, the technology integration offers a qualitative transformation of all components of educational process. As innovative tools are getting an important requisite for all kind of educational institutions, the researchers should be aware of their influence on teaching and learning processes. This paper presents parts of the outcomes from a massive survey aimed at investigation of ICT integration in Bulgarian schools. In order to assess the acceptance of technology resources and their institution-wide adoption, it is important to understand teachers and students' perceptions on the technology-enhanced teaching. It is essential to find out to what extent the teachers' practice is in line with the expectations of the students. The research of dynamics of this issue helps to better understand the processes and provide valuable guidance for the effective use of innovative tools in a learning context. Here we focus especially on the teaching practice in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (stEM) subjects in secondary education, where many different innovative tools are widely implemented.

In the task of 6D pose estimation by RGB-D image, the crucial problem is how to make the most of two types of features respectively from RGB and depth input. As far as we know, prior approaches treat those two sources equally, which may overlook that the different combinations of those two properties could have varying degrees of impact. Therefore, we propose a Feature Selecting Mechanism (FSM) in this paper to find the most suitable ratio of feature dimension from RGB image and point cloud (converted from depth image) to predict the 6D pose more effectively. We first conduct artificial selection in our Feature Selecting Mechanism (FSM) to prove the potential for the weight of the RGB-D feature. Afterward, the neural network is deployed in our FSM to adaptively pick out features from RGB-D input. Through our experiments on the LINEMOD dataset, YCB-Video dataset, and our multi-pose synthetic image dataset, we show that there is an up to 2% improvement in the accuracy by utilizing our FSM, compared to the state-of-the-art method. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

technology evolution has changed the way people reason, interact and how machinery is designed. technology has grown beyond human comprehension, especially in the automotive industry. As technology evolves, things have become more crucial in a human's life. As a result, invention of new cars and other means of transportation have become a huge success. Use of automatic cars is expanding day-by-day. Modern cars now come with some benefits such as adaptive cruise control system, lane change information, electronic sideview system, blind spot information, warning indicator of distance between cars and backup camera, etc. Yet, the possible stress caused by using some of these technologies and its impact on drivers have not be fully investigated. This study investigated driver's cognitive stress from using electronic sideview system versus regular sideview mirror for lane changing. Due to limited availability of cars equipped with electronic sideview system, only twenty drivers participated in the study. Sampled drivers included 7 females and 13 males. Seventy percent of the participants fell into age category of 18-28, 10% fell into age category of 29-39 and 20% in age category of 40-50, while none falls into the category above 50 years old. The study was conducted in the Midwest, United states (US) and the University Institutional Review Board approved the study protocol. Results reveal that 60% of the drivers responded to be more stressed using the electronic sideview system compared with the manual sideview mirror. About 50% affirmed that the electronic sideview system has a better image compared with the regular sideview mirror, but 70% of this 50% complained of cognitive overload. Two-drivers who affirmed that the electronic systems work perfectly also acknowledged that the confusion associated while deciding on which of the two systems to use. We present an out-of-core and distributed surface reconstruction algorithm which scales efficiently on arbitrarily large point clouds (with optical centres) and produces a 3D watertight triangle mesh representing the surface of the underlying scene. Surface reconstruction from a point cloud is a difficult problem and existing state of the art approaches are usually based on complex pipelines making use of global algorithms (i.e. Delaunay triangulation, graph-cut optimisation). For one of these approaches, we investigate the distribution of all the steps (in particular Delaunay triangulation and graph-cut optimisation) in order to propose a fully scalable method. We show that the problem can be tiled and distributed across a cloud or a cluster of PCs by paying a careful attention to the interactions between tiles and using Spark computing framework. We confirm the efficiency of this approach with an in-depth quantitative evaluation and the successful reconstruction of a surface from a very large data set which combines more than 350 million aerial and terrestrial LiDAR points.

stencils computations are a class of computations commonly found in scientific and engineering applications. They have relatively lower arithmetic intensity. Therefore, their performance is greatly affected by memory access. This paper studies the issue of memory access optimization for the key stencil computations of a high-order CFD program on the NVidia GPU. Two methods are used to optimize the performance. First, we use registers to cache the data used by the stencil computations in the kernel. We use the CUDA warp shuffle functions to exchange data between neighboring grid points, and adjust the thread computation granularity to increase the data reuse. Second, we use the shared memory to buffer the grid data used by the stencil computations in the kernel, and utilize loop tiling to reduce redundant accesses to the global memory. Performance evaluation is done on an NVidia Tesla K80 GPU. The results show that compared to the original implementation that only uses the global memory, the optimized implementation that utilizes the registers achieves a maximum speedup of 2.59 and 2.79 relatively for 15M and 60M grids, and the optimized implementation that utilizes the shared memory achieves a maximum speedup of 3.51 and 3.36 relatively for 15M and 60M grids. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the present work, a brief survey has been made on the Newtonian andnon-Newtonian approach of blood flow in a step like stenosed artery. A comprehensive theoretical study on the relation between the shear rate and the viscosity of the fluid has been carried out in the case of each non-Newtonian model (e.g. Maxwell fluid model, Casson fluid model, Carreau model, etc.). In this paper, we have considered a backward-facing step for simulation of the blood flow by employing a few of the above-mentioned models.
