Road transportation is an important area of research within the framework of sustainable development, which has had the greatest destructive impact on the environment for many years. Among the negative effects of this mode of transportation on the natural environment presented in the literature on the subject, attention is drawn primarily to air pollution by harmful emissions from transport means, climate change caused by CO2 emissions and noise pollution. Despite the fact that new vehicles emit much less harmful substances, road transportation (including passenger vehicles) remains one of the few industrial sectors for which total emissions are increasing. This is due to increasing freight transportation, growing car fleets and increasing mileage. As a result, there is a constant need for new solutions which would be more environmentally friendly and linked to the implementation of the concept of sustainable development. One of them, currently strongly promoted, is the large-scale deployment of purely battery-powered electric cars, the so-called BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicle). The purpose of this article is to demonstrate whether such vehicles can actually contribute to reducing the negative impact of road transportation on the environment and consequently to the balancing of transportation systems. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

We propose a distributed backup resource allocation scheme to enhance the reliability of mobile edge computing (MEC) services in a Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) access network. An Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model is developed to formulate the backup resource allocation problem to minimize the size of the MEC server at each node and the total backup capacity in a FiWi access network. An efficient heuristic algorithm is also developed to decide the backup MEC resources at each MEC server based on the bucket effect (BE). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. © 2019 IEEE.

distributed in-memory key-value stores (KVSs), such as Redis and Memcached, are widely deployed in modern data centers. In Redis, the throughput of Murmurhash2 is important to the performance of the whole KVS, and further affects the whole server. In this paper, we propose a high-performance scalable architecture for Murmurhash2 to improve data locality and reduce the latency, and deploy partial reconfiguration scheme to maximize the ratio of performance/area. Experiment results on Xilinx SOC platform demonstrate that the proposed architecture can improve the throughput by approximate 1.4x and achieve up to 5.3x performance/watt gain compared with the typical Intel platform. © 2019 IEEE.

Modern technology developed in renewables has opened a door to utilize micro hydro as one of the major sources of energy in micro-grid in terms of capital investment and sustainability. With such developments, frequency and voltage variation in micro-grid arise as a major concern where conventional control technique fails. This has driven the idea to develop electronic load controller to dump extra power hence minimizing the frequency variations. As the efficiency is reduced using such methods, batteries are applied in micro hydro to store the dumped power. However, to improve both voltage and frequency, combination of ELC and stATCOM are developed. Further, in order to improve the system performance, modifications in ELC corresponding to the load configuration were developed and proved to be beneficial. To improve the efficiency of the system, water heaters, pump loads, or other low wattage apparatus are also used. This paper presents a survey on various frequency and voltage control techniques available in small hydro system with their merits and demerits. The investigations on various problems demand further development.

Cloud computing has increased apparent notoriety and acceptance over the past years. The expediency of this virtual technology accompanies the budgetary issue. One of the essential characteristics of cloud computing, which assistances in decreasing the financial associated issues of the of the cloud providers is the on-demand assessing model. Moreover, malicious users mostly focus on the economic practicality of the cloud customers, as a result, such malicious are proficient to influence the accessibility and availability of cloud facilitated services. These attacks are known as distributed Denial of service attacks. In this work, we propose a novel methodology dependent on network flow analysis at the targeted side to distinguish and moderate the DDoS attacks against virtual services. Experiments were carried out by using real time datasets to assess the execution of the proposed methodology and the results recommend that our proposed method can identify and alleviate the DDoS attacks with agreeable precision and minimal overhead. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

Efficient scheduling algorithms play an essential part in heterogeneous computing systems (HeCS) to achieve high performance. So we proposed a new efficient dynamic multi-strategies scheduling algorithm (DMS). The basic idea of this algorithm is to reduce communication in the priority calculation phase and task mapping phase. In the priority calculation phase, the algorithm increases the weight of the task. During the task mapping phase, three approaches for mapping tasks are proposed, and the method which reduces the most communication time among the three approaches is chosen as the task mapping standard. The results of the algorithm presented in this paper demonstrate improved performance in terms of speedup, and schedule length ratio. © 2019 IEEE.

The global agriculture industry remains underdeveloped due to a lack of education among farmers about best practices and technologies. Similarly, corporate gamification and the rise of serious games have demonstrated their effectiveness in education within our era. The implementation of gamification principles through accessible technological platforms has massive potential in building best practices in the agriculture industry. Rice agriculture has a resistance to the adoption of new methodologies and technologies. This paper introduces 'Riceville', a game used to simulate a virtual farming environment promoting the use of effective best-practices introduced by leading rice organisations like the international Rice Research Institute (IRRI). By gamifying best practices, the social norms of low adoption and perception of risk can be altered to boost the reception of novel practices within the industry. This will not only serve to modernize the rice industry but also improve yields for farmers while helping agriculture companies increase exposure.

This paper provides a framework for (1) how we can foster the 21st century learning skills with educational robotics and some pedagogic strategies, (2) how Problem Based-Learning (PBL) can be used for teaching educational robotics, (3) how we can use a friendly technology to teach educational robotics such as S4A and Arduino, and (4) the evaluation of critical thinking through PBL. Quantitative results are presented to describe frequency codes, co-occurrences and similarity, and linking analysis about students' critical thinking skills during PBL phases. Next to that, the qualitative data provide valuable information on how teachers use educational robotics during PBL, what its advantages and limitations are, and how this topic may develop students' cognitive skills.

Since the Internet Of Things (IOT) are generally used, the data or information transferred between IOT devices and servers should be secured. In this research, hybrid cryptosystem based on the shared-key and asymmetric cryptography (or called Public-key cryptography) is proposed. According to the network communication, MAC address information of the IOT device is used for public-key querying and exchanging. Via asymmetric cryptography, the shared key can be automatically exchanged between IOT device and server. The implementation shows the feasibility of the proposed hybrid cryptosystem which could secure the data.

The sources of the astrophysical flux of high-energy neutrinos detected by IceCube are still largely unknown, but searches for temporal and spatial correlation between neutrinos and electromagnetic radiation are a promising approach in this endeavor. All major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts issued by IceCube. These programs use several complementary neutrino alert streams. A publicly distributed alert stream is formed by individual high-energy neutrino candidate events of potentially astrophysical origin, such as IceCube-170922A (which could be linked to the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056). A privately distributed alert stream is formed by clusters of neutrino events in time and space around either pre-selected gamma-ray sources or anywhere in the sky. Here, we present joint searches for multi-wavelength emission associated with a set of IceCube alerts, both private and public, received through mid-January 2021. We will give an overview of the programs of the participating IACTs. We will showcase the various follow-up and data analysis strategies employed in response to the different alert types and various possible counterpart scenarios. Finally, we will present results from a combined analysis of the VHE gamma-ray observations obtained across all involved instruments, as well as relevant multi-wavelength data. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.
