The use of a communication network in the closed-loop control systems has many advantages such as remotely controlling equipment, low cost, easy to maintenance, efficient information transmission, etc. However, the distributed or Networked Control Systems (NCS) has many drawbacks, such as network-induce end-to-end time delay and packet loss, which lead to a significant degradation in controller performance and may result in instability. Aiming at solving performance degradation in NCS, this paper propose to take the advantages and strength of the conventional Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID), Fuzzy Logic (FL), and Gain Scheduling (GS) fundamentals to design a Fuzzy-PID like-Gain Scheduling (F-PID-GS) control technique, which has been proved to be effective in obtaining better performance. The TrueTime toolbox is used to establish the simulation model of the NCS. Ethernet as a communication network is simulated for different load conditions and random packet loss. The design approach is tested on a second-order stepper motor. The results obtained show the effectiveness of the proposed approach in improving the overall system performance. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Power generation from solar photovoltaic (PV) plants depends on multiple factors such as solar radiance and ambient temperature. Effective monitoring and control of the energy generated with the solar PV plants may augment the complete performance of the system. The local controllers regulate switching between solar PV, local battery, community battery, and grid according to the availability of power in each system. The sensor data and user information are stored in the cloud that can be accessed with the Internet of Things (IoT) device for further computation. A Web-based graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed for appropriate monitoring and control of energy flow and also to enable the power pooling. The app gets information from the cloud on which various sensor’s data regarding energy pooling are stored by the local/community controllers, and it displays the information that is stored in the cloud. The primary task is to design and develop a Web-based application with sufficient data security. To secure the user data in the cloud, multi-factor authentication and symmetric key encryption are used for authorized access and data encryption. We propose an evolutionary algorithm inspired by evolution of birdsong grammars. The proposed algorithm is designed to quickly obtain practical solutions to large-scaled problems. The main mechanism for obtaining practical solutions quickly is to represent solution candidates in a compact way using grammars, that is to say, to make the search space smaller than the original one using grammars. Also, we apply the algorithm to a large-scaled OneMax problem and its variants. The simulation results show that the algorithm tends to quickly produce solution candidates with simple bit patterns and with not so bad fitness values for large-scaled problems as a bit pattern of the global optimum becomes more random. That can be considered as that practical solutions to large-scaled problems are obtained quickly. It is also shown that when the problem size is smaller, the algorithm tends to produce a precise bit pattern of the global optimum.

We introduce the acceptability of a decision maker to handle evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) on design space, while most of EMO research tries to find many solutions on an objective space and passes them to a decision maker. Unlike this conventional EMO approaches, our approach decides maker's model with the concept of acceptability and introduces it in EMO search. Especially, this approach works well when qualitative factors, such as the decision maker's experience and knowledge on a task, are a part of evaluations. Acceptability functions for each of objectives are aggregated firstly, and the aggregated acceptability forms contours on an objective space and is mapped on a design space. The acceptability contours on a design space can narrow down the area of solutions. We could find better solutions in our experiments than the conventional approach of searching solutions on an objective space.

In recent years, deep learning has been applied to various problems such as image recognition, voice recognition, and natural language processing, and has achieved results. At the same time, it is used in various applications and fields and is expected to be used in embedded systems such as IoT devices. However, deep learning requires a large computational cost, generally requires a GPU, and it is difficult to implement on small embedded devices. Also, in recent years, FPGAs have been applied to image processing technology fields such as defect inspection of automobiles, security systems, and industrial products. Hardware acceleration is one of the techniques to improve processing speed and it is often used in the field of image processing. In this work, the hardware acceleration for the convolutional neural network was designed compared to software processing. The hardware-based convolutional layer shows high performance than the software-based design. Additionally, these hardware-based modules were implemented on FPGA. In this paper, we show the detail of the architecture and the comparison result of processing time with CPU.

Data exploration is an essential task for gaining an understanding of the potential and limitations of novel datasets. This paper discusses the challenges related to exploring large Automatic Identification System (AIS) datasets. We address these challenges using trajectory-based analysis approaches implemented in distributed computing environments using Spark and GeoMesa. This approach enables the exploration of datasets that are too big to handle within conventional spatial database systems. We demonstrate our approach using a case study of 4 billion AIS records.

Modern graphs are not only large, but rapidly changing. The rate of change can vary significantly along with the computational cost. Existing distributed graph analysis systems have largely been designed to operate on static graphs. Infrastructure changes in these systems need to occur when the system is idle, which can result in significant wasted resources or the inability to cope with changes. We present EIGA, an elastic and scalable dynamic graph analysis system. Using a shared-nothing architecture and consistent hashing, E I GA can scale elastically as the graph grows or more computation is required. By applying sketches, we perform an edge partitioning of the graph where high degree vertices can be split among multiple nodes. EIGA supports both synchronous and asyn-chronous vertex-centric applications that operate in batches on a continuously changing graph. We experimentally demonstrate that EIGA outperforms state-of-the-art static systems while supporting client queries, elastic infrastructure changes, and dynamic algorithms.

Movie contents of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) are popular among Internet users. The users enjoy positive feelings caused by the binaural sounds via headphones. Some previous studies clarified the psychophysiological effects of the ASMR contents. Referring to a previous proposal for creating ASMR sounds by Miyazaki et al., this study proposes an Interactive Evolutionary Computation for creating ASMR sounds. Interactive Evolutionary Computation has been applied for creating media contents including sound and music contents. The property of the proposed Interactive Evolutionary Computation is creating ASMR sounds suited to each user's preference and feelings by simple repetitive evaluations. For having a fundamental investigation of the efficiency of the proposed method, a listening experiment composed of two steps was conducted. Each of the twelve subjects participated in both of the two steps, and they evaluated the ASMR sounds and scored them repeatedly in the search step. In the evaluation step, they scored the two sounds picked up from the 1st and the 10th generations. Trend of increase in the fitness values was observed in both of the experimental steps.

For a decade, the Ceph distributed file system (CephFS) has been widely used to serve the ever-growing big data in many key fields ranging from Internet services to AI computing. To scale out the massive metadata access, CephFS adopts a dynamic subtree partitioning method, splitting the hierarchical namespace and distributing subtrees across multiple metadata servers. However, this method suffers from a severe imbalance problem that may result in poor performance due to its inaccurate imbalance prediction, ignorance of workload characteristics, and unnecessary/invalid migration ac-tivities. To eliminate these inefficiencies, we propose Lunule, a novel CephFS metadata load balancer, which employs an imbalance fac-tor model for accurately determining when to trigger re-balance and tolerate benign imbalanced situations. Lunule further adopts a workload-aware migration planner to appropriately select sub-tree migration candidates. Compared to baselines, Lunule achieves better load balance, increases the metadata throughput by up to 315.8%, and shortens the tail job completion time by up to 64.6% for five real-world workloads and their mixture, respectively. Be-sides, Lunule is capable of handling the metadata cluster expansion and the client workload growth, and scales linearly on a cluster of 16 MDSs.

This semester the Gruendungsgarage starts its 10th volume, an occasion to analyze the development of this special education format in entrepreneurship. The Gruendungsgarage is a cooperation between the University of Graz (KFU) and the Graz University of technology (TUG). Originally it was designed as an interdisciplinary and interuniversity teaching format offered as an elective course where students were able to work on their own real business ideas while getting assistance from university experts as well as from successful practitioners with a wide range of experience. Because of its popularity and constant improvement, Gruendungsgarage became more and more professional and over time changed its format into an academic start-up accelerator. Setting up university start-up accelerator programs has been a worldwide proven model that enables students to intensively develop their business idea into a marketable product or service in just a few months. Since the winter semester 2017/18 Gruendungsgarage has admitted not only students but also scientific staff. University and postdoctoral researchers of the engineering faculties benefit from a wide range of Gruendungsgarage services, as technical scientists with high-tech innovation get supported by experts and entrepreneurs, creating a business model suitable to their scientific discoveries. Because of this comprehensive service offer, one of the two located universities of applied science recently showed interest in becoming a partner of the Gruendungsgarage.
