This study aimed to find out the usage of internet technology among the pre-service teachers at Faculty of education in Amran University, Yemen. To bring about this aim, a descriptive research design (i.e. survey, and open interview) was used. A constructed questionnaire includes 28 items that were distributed on three domains of the internet usage: Academic, professional and general internet usage. Interview, as an aid tool, was used to explore the reasons beyond why some of the study subjects did not answer the questionnaire. Results of the questionnaire revealed that most of the subjects utilize the internet but not in favor of development their academic, or profession specialization as teachers in the future. On the other hand, the results of the interview showed that reasons beyond why some subjects did not answer the questionnaire were: The absence of internet usage facilities for them as well as the negative attitudes towards its usage. Based on the results of the study, some recommendations were recommended. © 2019 IEEE.

Deviations between electric current measurements and reality can cause severe problems in the power train of electric vehicles (EVs). Among others, these are unnecessary power limitations and inaccurate performance coordination during driving or charging. One reason for these deviations are time delays. In this paper, we present three different approaches for time delay estimation (TDE) and evaluate these with real data from power trains of EVs. Besides the accuracy of the TDE, the focus of our evaluation lies on the computational efficiency to enable an execution on automotive electronic control units (ECUs). The Linear Regression approach suffers even from small noise and offsets in the measurement data and is unsuited for our purpose. A better alternative is the Variance Minimization approach. It is not only more noise-resistant but also very efficient after the first execution. Another interesting approach are Adaptive Filters presented by Emadzadeh et al. Unfortunately, Adaptive Filters do not reach the accuracy and efficiency of Variance Minimization in our experiments. Thus, we recommend Variance Minimization for TDE of current signals in the power train of EVs.

Knee arthroplasty (KA) has led to substantial clinical results through the advancement of surgical procedures. Hand frame extraction is one of the important and crucial tasks to analyze video images of Orthopaedic surgery (OS). Although a number of vision-based techniques have been used to interpret hand movements in the field of computer vision, proper hand frame extraction in OS video is still a challenging task in the surgical work atmosphere. Therefore, this paper proposes a hand frame extraction method in KA surgical video images. For each video frame, the proposed method automatically recognizes three classes, hand, no-hand, or non-surgical area, by using Resnet-50. The method was validated by using five videos of UKA (Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty), a type of KA. The experimental results demonstrated that the model achieved a recognition accuracy of 96%. Moreover, the model has shown significantly good performance in extracting hand class frames in the test dataset (Precision = 0.95, Recall = 0.98, and F1-score = 0.97).

The paper presents that with the application of $$Z^+$$ -numbers arithmetic, the k nearest neighbors method can be adapted to various types of data. Both, the learning data and the input data may be in the form of the crisp number, interval, fuzzy or $$Z^+$$ -number. The paper discusses the methods of performing arithmetic operations on uncertain data of various types and explains how to use them in the kNN method. Experiments show that the method works correctly and gives credible results. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper, we have proposed a novel VLSI-oriented parallel algorithm for quaternion-based rotation in 3D space. The advantage of our algorithm is a reduction the number of multiplications through replacing part of them by less costly squarings. The algorithm uses Logan’s trick, which proposes to replace the calculation of the product of two numbers on summing the squares via the Binomial theorem. Replacing digital multipliers by squaring units implies reducing power consumption as well as decreases hardware circuit complexity. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Aggressive packet combining (APC) scheme is a well-established scheme which reduces the number of retransmissions for receiving correct packet in error prone wireless link. It is a well-known fact that the retransmissions consume extra bandwidth and battery energy of the portable computer. Therefore, APC is an efficient technique which reduces number of retransmissions for a packet, thus reducing latency of the wireless system. In APC, three copies of a packet are transmitted, and receiver does bit-wise majority decision to get the combined copy. Least reliable bits identification is done in the combined packet if majority logic fails. Search the correct bit pattern for least reliable bits so obtained. APC provides higher reliability but at expense of throughput of the system. Therefore, major issue in APC is the lower throughput which at maximum is 33.33% (13×100). In this paper, modified APC with repetition code is proposed which addresses lower throughput issue of conventional APC. Simulation results show significant performance improvement in terms of throughput when packet combining scheme with repetition code is used in APC scheme. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In conventional Genetic Programming for regression problems, the whole population evolves to adapt to the training data. However, individuals cannot adjust themselves to provided data, which results in slow convergence. On the other hand, gradient-based methods such as gradient descent quickly converge toward the solution by using local gradient information. Local search methods can be applied in Genetic Programming at an individual level, thus introducing local adaptations. In this paper, we propose to use the inner product of the input data with the parameter vector, which is updated using the Gradient Descent method. This approach is beneficial for two reasons: (i) gradient descent optimizes models created by the evolutionary process, thus decreases the search space of the GP, and (ii) inner product reduces the dimension of the input data, thus allows GP to efficiently handle high-dimensional data. Additionally, we propose an efficient algorithm to obtain information on the gradient. The proposed method is tested for regression problems on datasets with 10 or more dimensions. Results show that the proposed method converges to solutions faster than the conventional GP, at the same time providing models comparable to models created by SVM.

A dynamic population size strategy is proposed for the fireworks algorithm (FWA) to adjust the population size based to the search results of the current generation. When the currently found optimal individual is updated, a linear decreasing method is activated to maintain an efficient exploitation speed. The population size is reduced by 1 until the minimum preset population size is reached, then the population size remains unchanged. Otherwise, we randomly generate a larger population size than the initial population and expand the explosion amplitudes of all firework individuals artificially, which the expectation that we can escape current local minima. To analyze the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, we combined it with the enhanced FWA (EFWA) together, and run the EFWA and (the EFWA + our proposed strategy) on 28 CEC 2013 benchmark functions in three different dimensions. Each function is run 30 trial times independently, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test is applied to check significant differences. The statistical results showed that the proposed dynamic population size strategy can not only achieve a faster convergence speed for the FWA but also can jump out of trapped local minima more easily to maintain a higher performance, especially for high-dimensional problems.

Electrical energy is the basic requirement for the economic development of any country. In today's culture, electricity is a vital part of functioning as a society, we use it almost every minute. There are many causes of Blackout due to damage to electrical transmission lines. In places where environmental and public safety is at risk, power failure is particularly critical. In this 21st Century, we are using a radical and interconnected distribution network. Firstly, it briefs distribution used today which has more advantages. Secondly, the safe overhead power transmission techniques for low voltage AC distribution; special challenges to operational safety, power quality, reliability, especially focus on the open circuit fault identification techniques and reason for power outages were discussed. Further, the major impact as a result of the overhead power distribution line gets terminated, and earthing of live wire may electrocute the living things and affects public safety were discussed. Finally, the characteristics and requirements that are to be considered for these fault identification techniques are discussed for line termination in LT (230v/415v) power distribution.
