The objective of this paper is to propose a backpropagation neural network (BPN) with a saturation-type transfer function x/(1+|x|) for the study of dynamic identification and prediction of a bioreaction system. Both the dynamic learning and prediction abilities of this network were thoroughly studied. In this work, neural networks provide the dynamic learning and prediction process that moves along the time schedule batchwise. Several factors affecting the learning and prediction performance were studied. Proper learning factor /spl eta/ and momentum term coefficient /spl alpha/ as well as the suitable network size were searched. Three-layered BPNs were used in the tests. Different numbers of hidden nodes were tested for learning ability. The best values of /spl eta/ and /spl alpha/ were also determined. The proper number of input/output nodes was also studied. Effect of different dynamic learning intervals both on the learning and prediction performance were studied. Different data sampling intervals were also compared based on the performance of dynamic prediction.

In response to societal needs, a new interdisciplinary curriculum at the interface of technology, policy and management has been developed at Delft University of Technology. In each of the four years, project learning is part of the core-curriculum. Projects are selected to provide a cumulation of learning experiences with respect to both behavioral and technical complexity. Three example projects are described. Experiences up to date indicate clear student motivation to work on projects, the necessity for intense staff involvement and coordination, and the necessity for a gradual built-up of complexity.

Recently, neural network techniques have been widely used in adaptive and learning control schemes for nonlinear systems. However, generally, it costs a lot of time for learning in the case applied in control systems. Furthermore, the physical meaning of neural networks constructed as a result, is not obvious. In this paper, a design method of intelligent tuning PID controllers is proposed, which has a fusional structure of self-tuning and neural network schemes. This method enables us to understand a physical meaning of the control parameters, and also to adjust PID gains quickly.

Skill acquiring process for intelligent planning and trajectory following tasks based on learning is a topic considered in this paper. Several problems like definition and recognition of a skill, skill parametrization, off-line training, storage and generalization of a skill are particularly discussed. Task-oriented anthropomorphic learning concept, as a final result, gains a parametrized model of a robot for the given task. Successive approximation of nominal control sequences of a robot is used for experience generation. This approach possesses characteristics of globality. Applied in feedforward control concept it provides anticipation of future actions in trajectory planning tasks.

This paper presents an endomorphic modeling methodology for designing intelligent systems. An intelligent system can determine by itself using its knowledge of the world and adapt itself to continuously changing circumstances. We have developed an intelligent endomorphic system by integrating the decision making component and knowledge based internal model with the internal model construction model. learning capabilities are established using the inductive reasoning and adaptive expert system techniques. The proposed methodology has been successfully applied to the design of an intelligent card game player capable of supporting the intelligent learning and decision making.

A learning control scheme is proposed for learning of cooperating multiple-robot manipulators which handle a rigid object under the uncertain operating conditions such as parametric uncertainty, unknown external disturbance and the commonly held object being unknown. The learning controllers drive the multiple-robot manipulators to follow the desired Cartesian trajectory with the desired internal forces to the unknown object. It is also shown, after perfect learning, the learning controllers provide an approximate inverse dynamics solution along the desired object trajectory with the desired internal force.

This paper is concerned with automated diagnosis of sequential logic circuits, where we define the task of diagnosis to be the identification of (minimal) sets of circuit components which account for observed circuit misbehavior. We also discuss test generation for distinguishing between several possible candidate diagnoses. Our particular approach to diagnosis, an instance of consistency-based diagnosis, requires no information concerning the possible modes or probabilities of component failure such as stuck-at faults or MTBF data, respectively. The approach computes diagnoses utilizing only a set of observations of actual circuit behavior and a model of specified circuit structure and behavior. This latter model is nothing more than a logic program (i.e. a pure Prolog program or constraint logic program) satisfying certain ontological constraints.

Well engineered intelligent marketing systems cover the following functionalities: marketing situation modeling, integrated data and knowledge handling, marketing process support. Currently, there are loose linkages among the three issues. The author explores these linkages by developing a formalism capable of representing a wide range of marketing situations in a rigorous and comprehensive fashion. The purpose of the formalism is also to guide the development of IMS which will provide the three capabilities in an integrated and uniform way.

In an intelligent machine design, the information system design plays an important role as well as the mechanical and electronic design, because intelligent functions are mostly realized by the software. In addition, the data that should be processed becomes huge. In this paper, the conventional ISM (interpretive structural modeling) is extended to such a system design and some design principles are discussed such as the data flow balance in the system. As a case study, sensory design and simple experiments were performed. In the last of the paper, the application to the self-organizing machine is also discussed.
