Bosonic quantum computing, based on the infinite-dimensional qumodes, has shown promise for various practical applications that are classically hard. However, the lack of compiler optimizations has hindered its full potential. This paper introduces Bosehedral, an efficient compiler optimization framework for (Gaussian) Boson sampling on Bosonic quantum hardware. Bosehedral overcomes the challenge of handling infinite-dimensional qumode gate matrices by performing all its program analysis and optimizations at a higher algorithmic level, using a compact unitary matrix representation. It optimizes qumode gate decomposition and logical-to-physical qumode mapping, and introduces a tunable probabilistic gate dropout method. Overall, Bosehedral significantly improves the performance by accurately approximating the original program with much fewer gates. Our evaluation shows that Bosehedral can largely reduce the program size but still maintain a high approximation fidelity, which can translate to significant end-to-end application performance improvement.

RISC-V is an open royalty-free instruction set architecture (ISA) under the governance of RISC-V international. The ISA consists of a base instruction set and many modular extensions among which the vector extension that supports data parallel execution is recently ratified. Supporting the goal of an open ISA to accelerate innovation, we developed an open-source double-precision vector math library as a highly relevant addition to the high-performance computing (HPC) ecosystem. This paper introduces the RISC-V vector ISA, some of those computational instructions we found most useful, and the software structure of, as well as the various numerical techniques employed to make the library accurate and efficient.

Pipelines hold a crucial role in the effective transportation of liquids and gases over extensive distances. Detecting leaks through Acoustic Emission (AE) events is intricate due to the interference of noise. The conventional strategy of utilizing AE scalogram images from continuous wavelet transforms (CWT) faces challenges in precisely identifying leaks amidst noise. To surmount these complexities, we introduce an inventive technique. Our Enhanced Leak-Induced Scalograms are generated by processing CWT images with Laplacian filters, Non-Local Means (NLM) noise reduction, and adaptive histogram equalization (AHE) to enhance contrast. This unique approach ensures scalogram image quality while reducing background noise. We incorporate the Grey Level Run Length Matrix (GLRLM) model for feature extraction and deploy K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and t-Distributed stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) for accurate classification of leak and normal conditions. The proposed method excels across diverse metrics using real-world datasets. This methodology elevates image quality, bolsters classification precision, and marks a significant advancement in pipeline leak detection. Validation through experimentation on an industrial-scale testbed involving real pipelines affirms the efficacy of our proposed approach. © 2023 IEEE.

Current augmented reality (AR) interfaces are often designed for interacting with one application at a time, significantly limiting a user's ability to concurrently interact with and switch between multiple applications or modalities that could run in parallel. In this work, we introduce an application model called Layerable Apps, which supports a variety of AR application types while enabling multitasking through concurrent execution, fast application switching, and the ability to layer application views to adjust the degree of augmentation to the user's preference. We evaluated Layerable Apps through a within-subjects user study (n=44), compared against a traditional single-focus application model on a split-information task involving the simultaneous use of multiple applications. We report the results of our study, where we found differences in quantitative task performance, favoring Layerable mode. We also analyzed app usage patterns, spatial awareness, and overall preferences between both modes as well as between experienced and novice AR users.

We propose a corrigible motion recognition system for metaverse applications, which can visualize motion data to analyze user motion and correct wrong motion data. To test the system performance, we created a metaverse dataset. The dataset consists of user interface/game/interaction classes, all of which are actions that can be used in metaverse applications. We collected motion data and conducted a recognition rate comparison experiment. We hypothesize that the recognition rate could be enhanced using proper input data types. To verify this hypothesis, we converted the motion data into three data types and recognized the data using spatial-temporal graph convolutional networks. The experimental results revealed that the recognition rate varied according to the input data types. The highest recognition performance was derived from angle-based data types. Finally, we analyzed the reason for misclassifications using Motion-Sphere. During the analysis process, we determined the standard action of the training data. We corrected wrong action data according to the standard action and confirmed the increased recognition rate. We proved that our system could correct misclassification cases using standard action through the enhanced recognition rate.

Hydrological models are designed to simulate and predict the dynamic cycling of surface and groundwater. These models represent simplifications of complex hydrological pro-cesses and play an integral role in hydrological research and real-world applications. The WRF Hydro model is widely used due to its multi-scale capabilities for land-atmosphere modeling. Recent studies have focused on enhancing the performance of different modules in WRF through GPU parallel optimization techniques. However, WRF - Hydro has not been able to utilize the GPU for computations which leads to lower computational efficiency when simulating hydrological calculations over large regions for extended periods. In this paper, we first analyze the computational and communication bottlenecks in WRF Hydro. We then propose several methods for performance optimization accordingly. To address the computational bottleneck, we develop efficient GPU-based overland routing and channel routing, eliminating redundant calculations. Additionally, we adopt an improved block partitioning strategy to enhance memory access efficiency on the GPU. To tackle the communicational bottleneck, we adopt a packetized communication strategy to reduce the number of communication operation calls in channel routing and simplify the preprocessing operations for communication. Meanwhile, for overland routing, we employ multi-stream to minimize redundant synchronization operations and overlap communication with computation to reduce communication overhead. The evaluation results demonstrate that WRF -Hydro can achieve significant speedups in several simulation cases after applying our proposed optimizations, resulting in a maximum speedup of 6.67 ×. © 2023 IEEE.

Real-world work-spaces typically revolve around tables, which enable knowledge workers to comfortably perform tasks over an extended period of time during productivity tasks. Tables afford more ergonomic postures and provide opportunities for rest, which raises the question of whether they may also benefit prolonged interaction in Virtual Reality (VR). In this paper, we investigate the effects of tabletop surface presence in situated VR settings on task performance, behavior, and subjective experience. In an empirical study, 24 participants performed two tasks (selection, docking) on virtual interfaces placed at two distances and two orientations. Our results show that a physical tabletop inside VR improves comfort, agency, and task performance while decreasing physical exertion and strain of the neck, shoulder, elbow, and wrist, assessed through objective metrics and subjective reporting. Notably, we found that these benefits apply when the UI is placed on and aligned with the table itself as well as when it is positioned vertically in mid-air above it. Our experiment therefore provides empirical evidence for integrating physical table surfaces into VR scenarios to enable and support prolonged interaction. We conclude by discussing the effective usage of surfaces in situated VR experiences and provide initial guidelines.

We live in a data-centric world where many fundamental shifts in our daily lives are powered by Big Data. To meet the performance, cost, and energy demands of modern Big Data systems, there have been significant technological and engineering breakthroughs in the field of storage systems with novel hardware innovations and software architectures. Nevertheless, a typical computer science student still associates data storage solely with the technology of hard disk drives (HDD), which was invented six decades ago. One key reason for this association is the lack of courses on modern storage systems in computer science education curricula. In this paper, we make a concerted effort to summarize the state of storage systems education across universities, popular textbooks, and policies (ACM/IEEE). We make a case that the storage systems should have its own home course in educational curricula. We report on our experience of designing and offering one such course at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam over the past four years. We further contribute to the educational material in this direction by making the course lectures, video recordings, assignments, and grading framework freely and openly accessible at https://***/courses/storage-systems-vu.

Accurate weather forecasts are crucial for many aspects of people's lives. Traditional short-term precipitation forecasting methods mainly rely on numerical weather predictions based on meteorological dynamics modelling. However, numerical weather predictions based on high-resolution physical models require hours of computation on supercomputers. Deep learning networks possess strong feature extraction capabilities, directly mapping images, meteorological data, and other information to high-dimensional feature spaces. Neurons extract abstract features, enabling continuous training and learning for predictions. Therefore, deep learning provides a new solution for short-term precipitation forecasting. In the past, deep learning has been used for precipitation forecasting by employing radar echo extension methods;however, these methods are limited to short-term forecasts and do not utilize other meteorological data, resulting in inaccurate predictions. This study proposes a model containing an attention mechanism, a convolutional extended short-term neural network (Att-PredRNN), based on 5.625° (32×64 grid points) resolution ECMWF reanalysis data and three years of global meteorological and daily precipitation data. The network uses multiple meteorological fields as input factors to predict spatial precipitation distribution for 24-hour precipitation forecasting. The model significantly improves the capture of spatial and temporal correlations through the attention matrices focusing on different parts of the input sequence. Experimental results show that the proposed Att-PredRNN model outperforms other comparison models in terms of RMSE, CSI, POD, and FAR overall and dramatically enhances the accuracy of short-term precipitation forecasts. Throughout the visual analytics process, users create visualizations with different dimensionalities. Research shows that in this process users benefit from being able to simultaneously see 2D and 3D modes of their data visualizations. Towards supporting this potential need, we introduce HybridAxes, an immersive visual analytics tool that allows the users to conduct their analysis at either end of the Reality-Virtuality continuum - either in 2D on desktop monitors or 3D in an immersive AR/VR environment - while enabling them to seamlessly switch between the two modes. We believe that by using our system, users will find it easier and faster to understand and analyze multi-dimensional data. An initial pilot test indicates positive trends in terms of users' performance time and usability metrics compared to the standalone desktop or AR/VR counterparts. Our preliminary results also suggest that users experience a lower cognitive load while task-switching between these virtuality modes. This reduction in mental effort causes them to perceive the system to be unobtrusive and pleasant to work with. Going forward, we plan to conduct more rigorous studies to verify our claims and to explore other research questions on this topic.
