This paper presents a detailed overview of an autonomous All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) that tracks and follows a person. The ATV uses computer vision to identify and track objects, and a Jetson Orin Nano GPU and YOLOv8 to enable autonomous operation. The technologies for generating real-time animated avatars are very useful in the fields of VR/AR animation and entertainment. Most of the existing studies, however, always require the technology of time-consuming motion capture at high cost. This paper proposes an efficient lightweight framework of dynamic avatar animation, which can generate all the facial expressions, gestures, and torso movements properly in real time. The entire technique is driven only by monocular camera videos. Specifically, the 3D posture and facial landmarks of the monocular videos can be calculated by using Blaze-pose key points in our proposed framework. Then, a novel adaptor mapping function is proposed to transform the kinematic topology into the rigid skeletons of avatars. Without the dependency of a high-cost motion capture instrument and also without the limitation of the topology, our approach produces avatar animations with a higher level of fidelity. Finally, animations, including lip movements, facial expressions, and limb motions, are generated in a unified framework, which allows our 3D virtual avatar to act exactly like a real person. We have conducted extensive experiments to demonstrate the efficacy of applications in real-time avatar-related research. The goal of this research is to provide much needed empirical data on how the fidelity of popular hand gesture tracked based pointing metaphors versus commodity controller based input affects the efficiency and speed-accuracy tradeoff in users' spatial selection in personal space interactions in VR. We conduct two experiments in which participants select spherical targets arranged in a circle in personal space, or near-field within their maximum arms reach distance, in VR. Both experiments required participants to select the targets with either a VR controller or with their dominant hand's index finger, which was tracked with one of two popular contemporary tracking methods. In the first experiment, the targets are arranged in a flat circle in accordance with the ISO 9241-9 Fitts' law standard, and the simulation selected random combinations of 3 target amplitudes and 3 target widths. Targets were placed centered around the users' eye level, and the arrangement was placed at either 60%, 75%, or 90% depth plane of the users' maximum arm's reach. In experiment 2, the targets varied in depth randomly from one depth plane to another within the same configuration of 13 targets within a trial set, which resembled button selection task in hierarchical menus in differing depth planes in the near-field. The study was conducted using the HTC Vive head-mounted display, and used either a VR controller (HTC Vive), low-fidelity virtual pointing (Leap Motion), or a high-fidelity virtual pointing (tracked VR glove) conditions. Our results revealed that low-fidelity pointing performed worse than both high-fidelity pointing and the VR controller. Overall, target selection performance was found to be worse in depth planes closer to the maximum arms reach, as compared to middle and nearer distances.

Network traffic engineering aims at the network quality, optimizing routes and detecting network attacks. In this context, traffic prediction is an essential tool to capture the underlying behavior of a network. Therefore, this work proposes a modularization architecture for volumetric prediction models, allowing switching between models and setups at runtime in controllers of Software Defined Networks (SDN), dealing with short time series and delivering the data already processed for the prediction. The proposed architecture compares the results from four traditional predictors based on short-range time dependency.

As we enter the exascale era, the energy efficiency and performance of high-performance computing (HPC) systems, especially running Machine Learning (ML) applications, are becoming increasingly important. Nvidia recently released its 9th-generation HPC-grade Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) microarchitecture, Ampere, claiming significant improvements over the previous generation’s Volta architecture. In this paper, we perform fine-grained power collection and assess the performance of these two HPC architectures’ performance by profiling ML benchmarks. In addition, we analyze various hyperparameters, primarily the batch size and the number of GPUs, to determine their impact on these systems’ performance and power efficiency. While Ampere is 3.16x more energy-efficient than Volta in isolation, this is counteracted by the PCIe interconnects of the A100s as the ML tasks are parallelized to run on more GPUs.

In today’s increasingly dynamic business environment, optimizing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms is essential to increase operational efficiency and provide the best possible user experience. The paper presents an approach that aims to improve the performance and security of CRM platforms by integrating Distributed Cloud architectures. The proposed solution leverages the scalability offered by cloud solutions to ensure high availability and low response time while addressing data security challenges through decentralized frameworks. Key metrics are evaluated to improve user performance. By decentralizing data and using robust encryption mechanisms, a high level of security and compliance with data protection regulations is ensured. The analysis suggests that this type of architecture provides a modern solution and a scalable and secure foundation for CRM platforms, thus supporting digitization and business growth in an increasingly digitally interconnected world.

In-place gesture-based virtual locomotion techniques enable users to control their viewpoint and intuitively move in the 3D virtual environment. A key research problem is to accurately and quickly recognize in-place gestures, since they can trigger specific movements of virtual viewpoints and enhance user experience. However, to achieve real-time experience, only short-term sensor sequence data (up to about 300ms, 6 to 10 frames) can be taken as input, which actually affects the classification performance due to limited spatio-temporal information. In this paper, we propose a novel long-term memory augmented network for in-place gestures classification. It takes as input both short-term gesture sequence samples and their corresponding long-term sequence samples that provide extra relevant spatio-temporal information in the training phase. We store long-term sequence features with an external memory queue. In addition, we design a memory augmented loss to help cluster features of the same class and push apart features from different classes, thus enabling our memory queue to memorize more relevant long-term sequence features. In the inference phase, we input only short-term sequence samples to recall the stored features accordingly, and fuse them together to predict the gesture class. We create a large-scale in-place gestures dataset from 25 participants with 11 gestures. Our method achieves a promising accuracy of 95.1% with a latency of 192ms, and an accuracy of 97.3% with a latency of 312ms, and is demonstrated to be superior to recent in-place gesture classification techniques. User study also validates our approach. Our source code and dataset will be made available to the community.

The computing power of edge devices is difficult to keep up with the development of modern computer technology, and the computing power is not improved enough. In practical application environments, so there is the birth of lightweight models. Lightweight models specifically refer to some models with simple model architecture and low computational load. Although the lightweight model is fast and the model is relatively simple, the detection effect is not very good. This paper proposes a parallel convolution module, performs feature fusion through parallel processing of multi-scale convolution kernels, and then integrates the spatial channel attention mechanism into the module to implement a multi-scale target detection module on a single feature layer. Model fusion proposes anchor boxes to generate heads and become a single-stage object detection model.

Deep learning, including Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Large Language Model (LLM), under Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) is very computationally intensive because of the burdensome computations like ciphertext convolution and matrix multiplication, non-linear layers, and bootstrapping. Existing FHE accelerators focus on the high throughput computational units, stacking parallelized clusters to maximize ciphertext inference performance. Nevertheless, this design philosophy cannot leverage the substantial parallelism at the application level and is not scalable for further performance enhancement by simply adding additional compute nodes to cope with the ever-increasing model sizes in the future. In this paper, we propose the high-performance FHE acceleration architecture in a “scale-out” manner for secure deep learning, termed as Hydra. It supports the multi-server scaling and arbitrary computational nodes theoretically, each handling a portion of the deep learning model governed by the central scheduling mechanism on the host server. Hydra exhibits excellent scalability and delivers outstanding performance across a range of compute resource sizes. We highlight the following results: (1) up to $74 \times$ and $160 \times$ speedup over the SOTA single card accelerator Poseidon and FAB; (2) outperforms 8-card FAB-2 by $12 \times$ to $21 \times$ for FHE-based CNNs and LLMs; (3) outperforms SOTA ASIC accelerators, CraterLake and SHARP, by $8.1 \times$ and $2.5 \times$ for LLM OPT-6.7B, and achieves comparable or superior energy efficiency under the same chip technology.

This paper investigates an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided over-the-air computation (AirComp) system, where the UAV is deployed as a flying base station to swiftly compute functional values of the data distributed at multiple ground sensors via AirComp within multiple time slots. Subject to the individual transmit power constraints of each ground sensor, we aim to minimize the computational mean-squared error (MSE) of AirComp, by optimizing the UAV’s trajectory over multiple slots, the ground sensors’ transmit coefficients, and the UAV’s de-noising factors per slot. Due to the complicated variable coupling, the resultant AirComp design problem is non-convex. As such, we decompose the original AirComp design problem into two low-dimensional subproblems, one for obtaining multiple groups of ground sensors to determine the UAV’s trajectory over time, and the other for optimizing the ground sensors’ transmit coefficients and the UAV’s receive de-noising factors for AirComp. For the first subproblem, we use the K-means algorithm to group ground sensors, and then the UAV’s hovering point at each time slot is determined based on each group of ground sensors. For the second subproblem, we recast it as a convex problem and then employ the Lagrange duality method to obtain the optimal solution. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme achieves a significant computational MSE performance gain over the alternative benchmark schemes. © 2023 IFIP.
