Prompted by the remarkable progress in mobile edge computing, there is an increasing need for executing complex applications on the edge server. These complex applications can be described using workflows which is a set of interdependent tasks. Existing studies focus on offloading the workflow tasks to the nearby edge servers in order to achieve high quality of service, However, the original edge server with the offloaded workflow tasks may be far away from the users due to the high mobility of users in mobile edge computing (MEC). Therefore, it is a key challenge to make good decisions on where and when the workflow tasks are migrated in the light of user's mobility. In this paper, we propose a workflow task migration algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning with the goal of optimizing the cost of workflow migration under delay-guarantee constraints. The proposed algorithm firstly utilizes the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based model to predict the mobile location of users, and then applies a dynamic programming algorithm to calculate the completion time of workflow. Finally, an improved Deep Q Network (DQN) algorithm is adopted to find the optimal workflow migration strategy. In order to assess the performance of the proposed algorithm, extensive simulations are carried out for four well-known scientific workflows. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can meet threshold at lower costs in comparison with the state-of-the-art approaches applied to similar problems.

Parallel scientific applications can benefit from decoupling communication and synchronization. One-sided programming abstractions, which separate communication from synchronization, have in fact served as a motivation for partitioned global address space (PGAS) models. However, the use of PGAS models in application codes in a manner that fully exploits the benefit of these programming models requires significant development effort. Meanwhile, a vast majority of scientific codes already use the Message Passing Interface (MPI) and need convenient features to support application-specific one-sided communication scenarios. MPI Remote Memory Access (RMA) can be employed for this purpose. MPI is a low-level API, however, and developing applications with MPI RMA requires programmers to be well versed in its nuances. We present RMACXX, a compact set of C++ bindings to MPI-3 RMA, to ease the use of MPI RMA. Unlike other PGAS models, which may have interoperability issues with MPI, RMACXX is written on top of MPI and uses the same runtime as MPI. The basic functionality of RMACXX adds only a relatively small number of extra instructions (about 20) to the critical communication path. Moreover, RMACXX provides an intuitive API for building a wide variety of scientific applications while enjoying performance matching handwritten MPI-3 RMA codes. © 2021 IEEE.

high performance is needed in many computing systems, from batch-managed supercomputers to general-purpose cloud platforms. However, scientific clusters lack elastic parallelism, while clouds cannot offer competitive costs for high-performance applications. In this work, we investigate how modern cloud programming paradigms can bring the elasticity needed to allocate idle resources, decreasing computation costs and improving overall data center efficiency. Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) brings the pay-as-you-go execution of stateless functions, but its performance characteristics cannot match coarse-grained cloud and cluster allocations. To make serverless computing viable for high-performance and latency-sensitive applications, we present rFaaS, an RDMA-accelerated FaaS platform. We identify critical limitations of serverless - centralized scheduling and inefficient network transport - and improve the FaaS architecture with allocation leases and microsecond invocations. We show that our remote functions add only negligible overhead on top of the fastest available networks, and we decrease the execution latency by orders of magnitude compared to contemporary FaaS systems. Furthermore, we demonstrate the performance of rFaaS by evaluating real-world FaaS benchmarks and parallel applications. Overall, our results show that new allocation policies and remote memory access help FaaS applications achieve high performance and bring serverless computing to HPC.

With the development of intelligent hardware technology, the heterogeneity of IoT devices in the edge and end layers, and diversity of application scenarios bring unprecedented challenges to the growth of IoT systems, mainly including a large amount of code be written for task construction in a cloud-edge-device collaborative environment, the inflexible configuration of offloading policies, and the high overhead in task scheduling/offloading. A dataflow based low-cost task orchestration and offloading platform, named as NBUFlow, is proposed to solve these problems. It is featured by defining tasks based on visualized dashboard of Node-RED to realize convenient and low-cost development of IoT systems, and multiple offload strategies of deployment and multitask parallel processing based on dataflow migration. The performance of the platform in terms of complete time of task deployment are verified through experiments. Results show that the completion time of task offloading can be reduced by three times compared with the container migration-based offloading method.

This paper investigates the impact of fundus image enhancement techniques on improving diabetic retinopathy (DR) prescreening accuracy using machine learning. DR, a prevalent complication of diabetes and a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness, necessitates precise and early detection to prevent severe outcomes. We explore various image enhancement methods, including histogram equalization, contrast stretching, contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), and noise reduction, to optimize the quality of retinal images used for analysis. Enhanced images are evaluated using a convolutional neural network (CNN) tailored for DR classification, assessing the impact of these techniques on model accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Our findings reveal a significant improvement in prescreening performance, with enhanced imaging techniques leading to more reliable and earlier diagnosis of DR, achieving 90% accuracy by CLAHE with CNN-LstM. This research highlights the critical role of high-quality image input in machine learning algorithms and the potential integration of these techniques into automated screening systems. Future research will focus on the real-time application of these techniques in diagnostic frameworks and their effectiveness in other retinal conditions, ultimately contributing to better screening strategies and improved patient care in managing DR. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Machine learning, a vital part of artificial intelli-gence, improves our ability to make predictions from complex data. The success of these predictions relies heavily on the model's fit with its data and the data's consistency. Accurate predictions depend on closely matching the model to the data patterns. However, missing data can seriously disrupt the accuracy of predictions, causing errors. To address this, we recommend adopting a proposed framework that enhances predictions by effectively filling in missing data. Our objective is to refine the accuracy of our predictions, especially in scenarios where the data might be incomplete and features exhibit patterns of dependency. In the context of missing data, our approach concentrates on enhancing regression performance to minimize the effects of missing data as effectively as possible.

Many studies show that bearings are the most vulnerable components in low-voltage motors. While advanced bearing diagnostic systems exist, their cost can be a barrier for non-critical machinery due to the potential wait time to see a return on investment. This research explores the feasibility of using basic signal processing techniques on vibration data for bearing condition monitoring. The primary goal is to analyze benchmark data from the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) dataset and establish a baseline performance for this data-driven approach. The results suggest that, with appropriate signal processing, it's possible to achieve early detection of bearing faults, leading to more efficient time-to-fault identification with higher detection accuracies ranging from 83 % to 100 % for each method.

Quantum communication, as an absolutely secure communication method, has been widely studied in recent years. While CVQKD is easier to realize and has efficient information transmission, has attracted more attention than DVQKD. And there is another kind of detection strategy which places the detector on a third party called continuous-variable measurement device independent quantum key distribution(CV -MDI), can lower the cost of implementation because it don't need such a high precision Gaussian modulator and thus can be commercialized easily. We apply a CV -MDI with passive-state preparation protocol to a oceanic turbulence model, and then we analyze the secret key rate and other performance of the protocol in the particular scenario.

The early diagnosis of cancer based on histopathology images plays an important role in medical science. Existing techniques generally partition the original histopathology image into small pieces for further classification. However, due to the fact that the number of benign (majority) samples is much larger than that of malignant (minority) samples, the classification is significantly imbalanced which adversely affects classification performance. Undersampling is commonly used to address the class-imbalance problem. However, existing methods are typically time consuming so they are not suitable to handle large-scale and high-dimensional data. In this paper we propose a fast and scalable undersampling method, hashing-based undersampling (HBU), to address class imbalance in large-scale medical image classification. Benign images are hashed and then placed into different buckets according to their locations in the input space. Undersampling is achieved by proportionally selecting benign images from the hash buckets. The HBU method is experimentally evaluated on two real histopathology image datasets, CAMELYON16 and ACDC@LUNGHP, by comparison with existing methods. Experimental results show that the HBU method outperforms six state-of-The-Art methods and is scalable and fast. © 2022 IEEE.
