The paper presents the architecture and organization of a reconfigurable inter-node communication system based on hierarchical embedding and logical multi-buses. The communication environment is a physical network with a bus topology or its derivatives (e.g. folded buses, mesh and toroidal bus network). In the system, multi-channel communication is forced through the use of tunable signal receivers/transmitters, with the buses or their derivatives being completely passive. In the physical environment, logical components (nodes, channels, paths) are distinguished on the basis of which logical connection networks separated from each other are created. The embedding used for this purpose is fundamentally different from the previous interpretations of this term. Improvement of communication and computational efficiency is achieved by changing the physical network architecture (e.g. the use of folded bus topologies, 2D and 3D networks), as well as the logical level by grouping system elements (processing nodes and bus channels) or their division. As a result, it is possible to ensure uniformity of communication and computational loads of system components. To enable formal design of the communication system, a method of hierarchy description and selection of its organization was proposed. In addition, methods of mathematical notation of bus topologies and the scope of their applications were analyzed. The work ends with a description of simulations and empirical research on the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. There is high flexibility of use and relatively low implementation price. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Since the appearance of Data Mining concept until the era of Big Data, the change in size of analyzed data, the arise of high performance systems, new technologies and software programs. Data science emerge as a field, which combines many approaches and techniques, related to data analyzing, process of data cleaning, integration of data, selection and transformation, knowledge extraction, evaluation and representation. The report outlines the main problems the authors encountered in cleaning up the data before analyzing it and proposes new SCSV software (scala comma separated values). Experiments have been conducted to clean up and analyze large volumes of data, based on machine learning techniques, from annual surveys among stackOverflow users. © 2020 IEEE.

It is well-known that outliers appear in the high-frequency region in the approximate spectrum of isogeometric analysis of the second-order elliptic operator. Recently, the outliers have been eliminated by a boundary penalty technique. The essential idea is to impose extra conditions arising from the differential equation at the domain boundary. In this paper, we extend the idea to remove outliers in the superconvergent approximate spectrum of isogeometric analysis with optimally-blended quadrature rules. We show numerically that the eigenvalue errors are of superconvergence rate h2p+2 and the overall spectrum is outlier-free. The condition number and stiffness of the resulting algebraic system are reduced significantly. Various numerical examples demonstrate the performance of the proposed method. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This work aims to contribute to employing of the computer-based simulation in the high education in Automotive Engineering for experiential learning. In order to design a set of simulation laboratory activities, a pedagogical approach is presented on basis of Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory. The chosen content to be taught is vehicle dynamic with a focus on braking performance that is adapted and implemented in CarSim software. The pedagogical approach presented in this study can represent as a reference point for discussions in experiential learning environment for vehicle dynamics curriculum and automotive industrial standards, considering the use of the Kolb's theory as a model for development of teaching-learning process and computer-based simulations as a teaching tool. As part of pedagogical proposal, this study is also focused on development of real world experiment as concrete experiment in topics related to automotive industries. Finally, some suggestions are recommended in order to help future works.

The increasing use of heterogeneous and more energy-efficient computing systems has led to a renewed demand for reduced- or mixed-precision floating-point arithmetic. In light of this, we present the forward CENA method as an efficient roundoff error estimator and corrector. Unlike the previously published CENA method, our forward variant can be easily used in parallel high-performance computing applications. Just like the original variant, its error estimation capabilities can point out code regions where reduced or mixed precision still achieves sufficient accuracy, while the error correction capabilities can increase precision over what is natively supported on a given hardware platform, whenever higher accuracy is needed. CENA methods can also be used to increase the reproducibility of parallel sum reductions. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Predicting the corresponding 3D structure from the protein’s sequence is one of the most challenging tasks in computational biology, and a confident interresdiue contact map serves as the main driver towards ab initio protein structure prediction. Benefiting from the ever-increasing sequence databases, residue contact prediction has been revolutionized recently by the introduction of direct coupling analysis and deep learning techniques. However, existing deep learning contact prediction methods often rely on a number of external programs and are therefore computationally expensive. Here, we introduce a novel contact prediction method based on fully convolutional neural networks and extensively extracted evolutionary features from multi-sequence alignment. The results show that our deep learning model based on a highly optimized feature extraction mechanism is very effective in interresidue contact prediction. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

When a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver are coupled together to create a multiscale, molecular-continuum flow simulation, thermal noise fluctuations from the particle system can be a critical issue, so that noise filtering methods are required. Noise filters are one option to significantly reduce these fluctuations. We present a modified variant of the Non-Local Means (NLM) algorithm for MD data. Originally developed for image processing, we extend NLM to a space-time formulation and discuss its implementation details. The space-time NLM algorithm is incorporated into the Macro-Micro-Coupling tool (MaMiCo), a C++ molecular-continuum coupling framework, together with a novel flexible filtering subsystem. The latter can be used to configure and efficiently execute arbitrary data-flow chains of simulation data analytics modules or noise filters at runtime on an HPC system, even including python functions. We employ a coupling to a GPU-based Lattice Boltzmann solver running a vortex street scenario to show the benefits of our approach. Our results demonstrate that NLM has an excellent signal-to-noise ratio gain and is a superior method for extraction of macroscopic flow information from noisy fluctuating particle ensemble data. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In recent years, Machine Learning (ML) algorithms have proved to be very helpful in several research fields, such as engineering, health-science, physics etc. Among these fields, Astrophysics also started to develop a stronger need of ML techniques for the management of big-data collected by ongoing and future all-sky surveys (e.g. Gaia, LAMOst, LSst etc.). NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is a space-based all-sky time-domain survey searching for planets outside of the solar system, by means of transit method. During its first two years of operations, TESS collected hundreds of terabytes of photometric observations at a two minutes cadence. ML approaches allow to perform a fast planet candidates recognition into TESS light curves, but they require assimilated data. Therefore, different pre-processing operations need to be performed on the light curves. In particular, cleaning the data from inconsistent values is a critical initial step, but because of the large amount of TESS light curves, this process requires a long execution time. In this context, high-performance computing techniques allow to significantly accelerate the procedure, thus dramatically improving the efficiency of the outliers rejection. Here, we demonstrate that the GPU-parallel algorithm that we developed improves the efficiency, accuracy and reliability of the outliers rejection in TESS light curves. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents a software system for designing strain gauge force sensors. The system is based on the Parameter Space Investigation (PSI) method coupled with methods of multicriteria optimization. The method gives the Decision Maker a high degree of control over the design process. The values of design objectives are calculated using a parametric finite element model of the force sensor being designed. The system is written in C# and Python utilizing the capabilities of the open-source FEA system SalomeMeca/Code_Aster. The paper presents a design case study, and the performance of the design method proposed is compared to that of other common algorithms for multi-objective optimization to demonstrate the system's efficacy.

The allreduce operation is one of the most commonly used communication routines in distributed applications. To improve its bandwidth and to reduce network traffic, this operation can be accelerated by offloading it to network switches, that aggregate the data received from the hosts, and send them back the aggregated result. However, existing solutions provide limited customization opportunities and might provide suboptimal performance when dealing with custom operators and data types, with sparse data, or when reproducibility of the aggregation is a concern. To deal with these problems, in this work we design a flexible programmable switch by using as a building block PsPIN, a RISC-V architecture implementing the sPIN programming model. We then design, model, and analyze different algorithms for executing the aggregation on this architecture, showing performance improvements compared to state-of-the-art approaches.
