Data centers are considered nowadays as the factories of the digital age, being currently responsible for consuming more energy than the entire United Kingdom. On the other side, the global total capacity of renewable power increases continuously. The combination of these two factors calls for new approaches in designing data centers powered only by renewable energy sources. Our work focuses on task scheduling optimization under a power envelope, and on the way to handle power starvation, i.e. when the available power does not provide sufficient resources to execute a given workload. To do so we utilize the concept of task degradation through cross-correlation to find where to place the tasks in order to reduce the data center profit degradation. The results show that our algorithm could obtain more than 34% increase in profit when compared to algorithms from the literature, while fulfilling the power profile and resources constraints.

Multifrontal QR algorithm, which consists of symbolic analysis and numerical factorization, is a high-performance algorithm for orthogonal factorizing sparse matrix. In this work, a graph convolutional network (GCN) for adaptively selecting the optimal reordering algorithm is proposed in symbolic analysis. Using our GCN adaptive classifier, the average numerical factorization time is reduced by 20.78% compared with the default approach, and the additional memory overhead is approximately 4% higher than that of prior work. Moreover, for numerical factorization, an optimized tasks stream parallel processing strategy is proposed and a more efficient computing task mapping framework for NUMA architecture is adopted in this paper, which called stM-Multifrontal QR factorization. Numerical experiments on the TaiShan Server show average 1.22x performance gains over the original SuiteSparseQR. Nearly 80% of datasets have achieved better performance compared with the MKL sparse QR on Intel Xeon 6248.

Cities of 21st century is marked by phenomenal growth in peripheral regions rather than core city, yet the study on peripheral zone, also known as peri urban area, in relatively low. In this regard, an attempt has been made to delineate the extent of peri urban areas of Kolkata, India with respect to job opportunity and population density based on the Census data for the year 2011. Two major indices have been developed such as livelihood opportunity index and depeasantization index for 56 community development blocks distributed over four adjoining districts of the core city namely Nadia, Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas using data management software. Regression analysis of the indices show that, peri urban of Kolkata does not display a concentric pattern. It is observed that, the blocks which are adjacent to core area have high level of urban growth. The blocks in outer periphery have moderate level of urban growth. Low urban growth is observed in the blocks in intermediate zone, especially on the eastern side. Blocks with industrial estates and real estates also show high urban growth. Connectivity with core city plays a major factor for urban growth. It reflects a complex distribution of habitats that can be best described as coagulating urbanism. © 2020 IEEE.

Many popular metrics used for the quantification of the quality or complexity of a codebase (e.g. cyclomatic complexity) were developed in the 1970s or 1980s when source code sizes were significantly smaller than they are today, and before a number of modern programming language features were introduced in different languages. Thus, the many thresholds that were suggested by researchers for deciding whether a given function is lacking in a given quality dimension need to be updated. In the pursuit of this goal, we study a number of open-source high-performance codes, each of which has been in development for more than 15 years—a characteristic which we take to imply good design to score them in terms of their source codes' quality and to relax the above-mentioned thresholds. First, we employ the LLVM/Clang compiler infrastructure and introduce a Clang Ast tool to gather Ast-based metrics, as well as an LLVM IR pass for those based on a source code's static call graph. Second, we perform statistical analysis to identify the reference thresholds of 22 code quality and callgraph-related metrics at a fine grained level.

For emerging high-density Wi-Fi networks, there have been plenty of studies that claim the need for more aggressive channel access to enhance spatial reuse. Against those previous ideas, this paper presents a different perspective that existing Wi-Fi devices already have excessive transmission opportunities, even without protecting each other in certain scenarios. We shed light on an anomaly within actual carrier sensing (CS) behaviors, which makes some neighboring devices become blind to each other and transmit simultaneously, due to undetected preambles. Through experimental study and analysis, we reveal both sides of the anomaly heavily affecting the overall network performance. Based on the observations, we design REFRAIN, a standard-compliant PHY/MAC framework, which copes with and further exploits the anomaly for better spatial reuse. Our prototype using NI USRP and commercial Wi-Fi devices shows the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach, while extensive simulation results demonstrate that REFRAIN achieves up to 1.57× higher average throughput by promoting valid transmissions, without modifying the 802.11 CS specification at all. © 2020 ACM.

This paper describes a novel high-performance library collection called libbft, specially designed to deal with byzantine fault tolerance for consensus mechanisms. This library is inspired by timed automata theory, and by the groundbreaking work of Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT). As case study, we tackle recently proposed consensus algorithms, such as the Delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance (dBFT) used on the NEO Blockchain. This library is organized in a multiprogramming language paradigm, being already implemented on C++ and Golang. The library handles states and transitions from regular automata machines, besides timed transitions, activated through conditions, actions and events. We also propose a mathematical notation to represent these elements, and an automatic tool to export the generated state machine into graphviz platform. We also integrate the library with state-of-the-art communication protocols, like the gRPC (Google RPC) and protobuf, which provides efficient and language-independent communication. This paper briefly describes the technological background behind libbft, practical applications and preliminary computational experiments.

General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM) is a key subroutine in highperformance computing. While the mainstream linear algebra libraries can deliver high performance on large and regular-shaped GEMM, they are inadequate for optimizing small and irregular-shaped GEMMs, which are commonly seen in new HPC applications. Some of the recent works in this direction have made promising progress on x86 architectures and GPUs but still leave much room for improvement on emerging HPC hardware built upon the ARMv8 architecture. We present Libshalom, an open-source library for optimizing small and irregular-shaped GEMMs, explicitly targeting the ARMv8 architecture. Libshalom builds upon the classical Goto algorithm but tailors it to minimize the expensive memory accessing overhead for data packing and processing small matrices. It uses analytic methods to determine GEMM kernel optimization parameters, enhancing the computation and parallelization efficiency of the GEMM kernels. We evaluate Libshalom by applying it to three ARMv8 multi-core architectures and comparing it against five mainstream linear algebra libraries. Experimental results show that Libshalom can consistently outperform existing solutions across GEMM workloads and hardware architectures.

This paper proposes a statistical method for memory bandwidth prediction in NUMA architecture. The memory bandwidth is expressed in terms of total transferred data per execution time. We first split memory bandwidth into components and measure data for each component separately. We then predict memory bandwidth for unknown values based on component measurements. Since memory bandwidth usage varies with problem size and the number of processors, we use these two values as parameters and perform the estimation in these two dimensions. This helps us to predict memory bandwidth usage for unknown problem sizes and processor numbers. This prediction method requires a few data points and it works dynamically without any source code inspection. We verified the approach in NUMA architecture for different regular and irregular high performance computing applications. The values for transferred data and elapsed time are analyzed for increasing input sizes and growing numbers of processors. Conclusions on memory bandwidth usage are derived from these data. © 2019 IEEE.

OpenSHMEM is one of the key programming models for high performance computing (HPC) applications with irregular communication patterns. Particularly, it is useful for problems that cannot be decomposed easily such as graph partitioning. The programming model supports Remote Memory Access (RMA), atomics, and collective operations. In this paper, we explore and evaluate the In-network computing approach for accelerating the OpenSHMEM collective operations, particularly barrier, broadcast, and reduction operations. To achieve acceleration, In-network computing leverages hardware engines on the networking elements and effective software that can efficiently use these capabilities. We explore the value of this approach for collective operations on the InfiniBand Host Channel Adapters (HCAs) and switches. Particularly, we focus on the recently introduced collective offload feature provided by the Mellanox Scalable Hierarchical Aggregation and Reduction Protocol (SHARP)(TM) capability, which accelerates the barriers and reduction operations;the multicast capability accelerates the broadcast collective operation. To leverage the hardware capabilities, we complement it with an effective software stack that includes Hierarchical Collectives (HCOLL) library, and SHARP layer. Our evaluation on Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)'s Summit system, which is the fastest supercomputer on the June 2019 Top 500 list, show that the hardware and software acceleration in the In-network computing approach is key for achieving the performance and scalability required for collectives and applications. For a 5120 process OpenSHMEM job, our results show that the barrier operation is 710% faster, broadcast is 370% faster, and reduction operation is 10 times faster when compared with the implementation of collective operations with no acceleration. Further, experiments with a 2D-Heat kernel show that the In-network computing approach is very effective for real-world applications.

Distributed stream Processing (DSP) applications are increasingly used in new pervasive services that process enormous amounts of data in a seamless and near real-time fashion. Edge computing has emerged as a means to minimise the time to handle events by enabling processing (i.e., operators) to be offloaded from the Cloud to the edges of the Internet, where the data is often generated. Deciding where to execute such operations (i.e., edge or cloud) during application deployment or at runtime is not a trivial problem. In this work, we employ Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to reassign operators during application runtime. Experimental results show that RL and MCTS algorithms perform better than traditional placement techniques. We also introduce an optimisation to a MCTS algorithm, called MCTS-Best-UCT, that achieves similar latency with fewer operator migrations and faster execution time. In certain scenarios, the time needed by MCTS-Best-UCT to find the best end-to-end latency is at least 33% smaller than the time required by the other algorithms.
