Virtual Machine (VM) consolidation provides a promising approach to save energy and improve resource utilization in cloud data centers. However, aggressive consolidation of VMs may lead to performance degradation of data centers and even Service Level Agreement (SLA) violation. Therefore, it is very important to solve the tradeoff between reduction of SLA violation level and energy costs. In this paper, we propose a Host state 3-order Markov Chain prediction model for SLA-aware and energy efficient consolidation of VMs in cloud data centers. We propose two adaptive utilization thresholds based on a robust statistical method for host state estimate, and our model uses them to build a 3-order Markov Chain Transition Matrix manually for host state detection. We implement our algorithms on Cloudsim simulator for comparative study. The experimental results show that our model can significantly reduce SLA violation rates while keeping energy cost efficient, it can reduce the metric of SLA Violation by at most 98.69% and the metric of Energy by at most 21.88% for real world workload. © 2019 IEEE.

Author name disambiguation (AND) is an important task in the field of scientific data mining. It has become a great challenge with the rapid growth of academic digital libraries. The task of AND for a large number of authors is computationally intensive. In particular, an author's name in MEDLINE is represented by full last name and initials, like 'Zhang S', which leads to a lot of identical strings that actually represent different names. In this paper, we proposed an efficient algorithm for parallel AND computation. The proposed algorithm mainly addresses the load balancing issue across many computing nodes. It involves the following strategies:(1) Author-based load balancing, which splits the computation load for each core by author name labels. (2) Matrix-based strategy, which calculates the pairwise similarity between publications and saves them in a matrix globally shared by all processes. Then group them by width-first search. We combine the above two strategies, the second of which is used to calculate authors with a large number of documents, and the other authors apply the first. We constructed a publications database written by Chinese authors from MEDLINE, the biggest public database for biomedical literature (abstracts). For benchmark testing, we experimented our algorithm with a dataset of 1 million publications on the Tianhe-2A supercomputer. Firstly, we trained an AND classifier that can achieve 98.1% of F1. The serial computation time is estimated to be approximately 246 hours, while the parallel execution time is approximately 66 hours in the case of four cores on a single node (with a speedup of 3.7x). Finally, we reduced the total parallel computing time of 1 million documents to about 2 hours and achieved 65.8% of parallelism efficiency using 200 cores on 90 nodes. © 2019 IEEE.

The generalized hypercube is an excellent interconnection network since it includes many interconnection topologies and it can be used to construct many data center networks. Considering the probability that, in general, all neighbors of one vertex becoming faulty at the same time is extremely low, we assume that each vertex has at least one fault-free neighbor. An r-dimensional generalized hypercube is denoted by G(m-r, m-r-1,⋅, m-1). In this paper, we proposed an efficient algorithm which can construct at least κ^1(G) disjoint paths based on any two adjacent vertices in G(m-r, m-r-1, m-1) in O(rm) time where κ^1(G) is the 1-restricted connectivity of G(m-r, m-r-1, m-1). The maximum length of these disjoint paths is bounded by 7. © 2019 IEEE.

With the development of byte-addressable non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies, such as Intel/Micron's 3D-XPoint memory and phase change memory (PCM), it is possible to persistently store data in hybrid memory systems consisting of DRAM and NVM. NVM-enabled hybrid memory systems are important to in-memory databases and computing, especially to large-scale in-memory data storage and processing. In this paper, we redesign the cache layer of LevelDB, which is a persistent key-value database based on the LSM-tree, and present NVLevel to provide low latency and high throughput for applications running in NVM-based hybrid memory systems. In particular, we propose two new designs over the LSM-tree. First, we propose Multi-Memtable to offer a write-friendly cache layer for the LSM-tree. Second, we present Hash-Skiplist, which is a hash-based Skiplist that has better read performance than the traditional Skiplist. With the new design of write-optimized Multi-Memtable and read-optimized Hash-Skiplist, NVLevel can achieve high performance both in read-intensive and write-intensive workloads. Our experiments with popular benchmarks including DBBench and YCSB show that NVLevel achieves better write throughput and latency compared to Huge-Memtable, which is the state-of-the-art improvement of the LSM-tree over NVM. Moreover, the overall performance of NVLevel in multi-thread environments is over 2 times higher than that of Huge-Memtable. © 2019 IEEE.

More and more organizations and users are attracted by the low-cost and high-quality cloud service to outsource their data into the cloud storage. The sensitive data has to be encrypted to protect its privacy. The traditional ciphertext full-text retrieval scheme directly calculates the inner product of high-dimensional encryption vectors, which has a huge amount of computation. In this paper, a Simhash-based multi-keyword ranked search scheme is proposed to achieve efficient full-text retrieval of massive ciphertext data. This scheme constructs SMRI index based on the idea of Simhash's dimensionality reduction. It processes the document's feature words into hash fingerprints and segments them. In order to prevent the leakage of ciphertext information in retrieval process, documents and query keywords are transformed into vectors, and then the vectors are extended and encrypted by improved SkNN algorithm. The B+ tree is constructed with segmented fingerprints and encrypted vectors, and the results are carried out by 'filter-refine' strategy. Firstly, the candidate results are obtained by matching the segmented fingerprints, which reduces computation largely. Then calculate the Hamming distance and vector product between the candidate results and trapdoor to get the top-k results. The experimental results show that SMRI has the advantages of high retrieval efficiency, low computational complexity, saving time and space costs, and is suitable for fast and secure retrieval of massive ciphertext data. © 2019 IEEE.

To achieve high availability of traffic and maximum coverage in the 5G network, clusters of small cells approach to maximize the system capacity. In this approach, the Core Network (CN) encounters a large number of signals due to the frequent hand-off between small cells in the event of an increase in the speed of user movement and users within certain limits of small cells. The present 5G system executes all handoff signals in the traditional complex hierarchical sequence which leads the system toward the bad performance due to redundant signaling. NO stack architecture has emerged as a promising methodology for radio access network (RAN) in the context of reducing the redundant signaling during X2-based handover by using control logic centrally and flat protocols. This paper proposes a system that is based on NO stack architecture for reducing handoff requests in CN by assigning the dedicated mobility controller to each cluster of small cells for locally managing the mobility. The dedicated cluster controller specially designs to manage and control the cluster of small cells as well as maintain the forwarding information of user equipment locally. In this proposed system, the dedicated controller resides at the nearest edge cloud, therefore a distributed edge cloud network is developed for high computing infrastructure and low latency access for the X2-based handover request.

The main technical challenge in device-free localization and tracking (DFLT) based on the received signal strength (RSS) is that the existence of multipath interferences will weaken the detection ability of RSS data of RF links. This difficulty will lead to performance degradation of wireless sensor network in cluttered environments. To address this challenge, this work focuses on developing a data-driven three-dimensional RSS model that can fully tap the certainty of target-induced shadow fading and reduce the uncertainty caused by multipath fading in RSS data. The novelty of our proposed model is twofold. Firstly, the RSS model is developed under relevance vector machine (RVM) framework with respect to three modeling parameters, that is, the excess path length, the proximity to TX/RX nodes and the static fade level. Secondly, as an alternative to existing empirical RSS modeling methods, our RVM-based modeling method can not only effectively capture complicated relationships among various modeling dimensions by machine learning but also have stronger representation ability on RSS data. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model in DFLT performance improvement. © 2019 IEEE.

In this big data era, a high-speed web access technique is expected for sharing a variety of large-scale data, especially over an international network. There are several high-speed web access techniques, such as data caching, data compression, data visualization, and intelligent data processing. In addition, hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)/1.1 provides a persistent connection for better throughput than the HTTP/1.0. However, using these techniques developed so far, there are many users who are not satisfied with the current web access speed. In this paper, we propose a novel protocol handler for international web accesses based on a high-speed data transfer protocol, namely high-performance and flexible protocol (HpFP). We first design our protocol handler on the basis of HTTP, and then implement it for the Internet Explorer browser in Windows operating system (OS). Using a laboratory experiment, we evaluate the performance of our protocol handler in terms of throughput on a real-time web for weather satellite data. The results show that the proposed protocol handler achieves higher throughput than the HTTP for website requests on international networks. The improvement gets more significant as either the latency or the packet loss ratio becomes higher. This implies that the proposed protocol handler especially devotes to international web accesses for big data. © 2019 IEEE.

Networks-on-Chip (NoC) is becoming the fundamental infrastructure of modern chip multiprocessors (CMPs). Along with the scaling up for a mesh-based network, the inequivalence of location for the links gradually causes unbalanced traffic load on each link. In a mesh network, the central regions are easy to become the hotspots, and the central links are heavily utilized than the peripheral links in the context of non-uniform cache architecture (NUCA). Different from the traditional uniform interconnection between network nodes, we propose the load-balanced link distribution scheme, which aims at assigning physical channels in accordance with the traffic load of each link. In this paper, we analyze the traffic load distribution for the mesh network with different scales and give the corresponding load-balanced link distributions. The simulation results indicate that the load-balanced scheme achieves not only lower physical channel costs but also better network and system performance than the traditional uniform scheme. The experiments with synthetic traffics show that the load-balanced scheme exhibits 57.33%/60.23%/47.56% lower network latency at saturation point on average compared with the uniform scheme for 8x8/10x10/12x12 mesh networks respectively. By contrast, the load-balanced link distribution scheme uses less physical channels, and the reductions in physical channel cost are 7.14%/5.56%/15.15% for 8x8/10x10/12x12 mesh networks respectively. The experiments with PARSEC benchmarks reveal that a 2.1% improvement of system throughput can be achieved by the load-balanced scheme. © 2019 IEEE.

Live migration of virtual machines (VMs) serves as the key technique that enables the resource management, server maintenance, and load balancing in cloud datacenters, while introducing a sufficient amount of performance degradation to both the source and destination physical machines (PMs) during and after the migration. Existing works generally focus on either minimizing the VM migration time (or downtime) or reducing the performance degradation for an individual VM migration from the host aspect. Jointly optimizing the performance of multiple concurrent VM migrations and the performance interference among VMs from the network aspect, however, receives comparably little attention. Leveraging the benefits of Software-Defined Network (SDN), in this paper, we propose ITEM, an Interference and Topology-awarE VM live Migration strategy to minimize the overall VM migration cost, which jointly optimizes the VM migration time during the migration and the VM performance interference after the migration. Specifically, our ITEM strategy seeks to decide the optimal migration destination PM, the migration path, and the allocated network bandwidth for a single migration (ITEM-S) and a set of concurrent migrations (ITEM-M). Extensive experiments using OpenFlow in the Mininet virtual network environment show that our ITEM strategy can significantly reduce the migration cost and improve the network bandwidth utilization, in comparison to the state-of-the-art VM migration strategies, yet with acceptable runtime overhead. © 2019 IEEE.
