Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative brain disease that affects millions of people around the world. As populations in the United states and worldwide age, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease will only increase. In turn, the social and financial costs of AD will create a difficult environment for many families and caregivers across the globe. By combining genetic information, brain scans, and clinical data, gathered over time through the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), we propose a new Joint high-Order Multi-Modal Multi-Task Feature Learning method to predict the cognitive performance and diagnosis of patients with and without AD.

high-throughput electron microscopy allows recording of large stacks of neural tissue with sufficient resolution to extract the wiring diagram of the underlying neural network. Current efforts to automate this process focus mainly on the segmentation of neurons. However, in order to recover a wiring diagram, synaptic partners need to be identified as well. This is especially challenging in insect brains like Drosophila melanogaster, where one presynaptic site is associated with multiple post-synaptic elements. Here we propose a 3D U-Net architecture to directly identify pairs of voxels that are pre- and postsynaptic to each other. To that end, we formulate the problem of synaptic partner identification as a classification problem on long-range edges between voxels to encode both the presence of a synaptic pair and its direction. This formulation allows us to directly learn from synaptic point annotations instead of more expensive voxel-based synaptic cleft or vesicle annotations. We evaluate our method on the MICCAI 2016 CREMI challenge and improve over the current state of the art, producing 3% fewer errors than the next best method (Code at: https://***/juliabuhmann/syntist).

Ensuring the security of the power grid is critical for national interests and necessitates new ways to detect power anomalies and respond to potential failures. In this poster, we describe our efforts to develop and optimize analysis methodologies for a 1000: 1 scale emulated smart grid at the United states Military Academy [2]. In contrast to previous work [3, 4], we explore historical analysis using Apache Spark [5] and integrate a Raspberry Pi into our testbed for real-time anomaly detection. We also implement a software controlled physical event and fault generator to induce and measure faults. Figure 1 gives an overview of our system. © 2018 Association for computing Machinery.

Cloud computing systems are complex distributed systems whose design is challenging for two main reasons: (1) since they are distributed systems, a correct design is very hard to achieve by testing alone;and (2) cloud computing applications have high availability and performance requirements;but these are hard to measure before implementation and hard to compare between different implementations. This paper summarizes our experience in using formal specification in Maude and model checking analysis to quickly explore the design space of a cloud computing system to achieve a high quality design that: (1) has verified correctness guarantees;(2) has better performance properties than other design alternatives so explored;(3) can be achieved before an actual implementation;and (4) can be used for both rapid prototyping and for automatic code generation. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

Nowadays, many modern applications, e.g. autonomous system, and cloud data services need to capture and process a big amount of raw data at runtime that ultimately necessitates a high-performance computing model. Deep Neural Network (DNN) has already revealed its learning capabilities in runtime data processing for modern applications. However, DNNs are becoming more deep sophisticated models for gaining higher accuracy which require a remarkable computing capacity. Considering high-performance cloud infrastructure as a supplier of required computational throughput is often not feasible. Instead, we intend to find a near-sensor processing solution which will lower the need for network bandwidth and increase privacy and power efficiency, as well as guaranteeing worst-case response-times. Toward this goal, we introduce ADONN framework, which aims to automatically design a highly robust DNN architecture for embedded devices as the closest processing unit to the sensors. ADONN adroitly searches the design space to find improved neural architectures. Our proposed framework takes advantage of a multi-objective evolutionary approach, which exploits a pruned design space inspired by a dense architecture. Unlike recent works that mainly have tried to generate highly accurate networks, ADONN also considers the network size factor as the second objective to build a highly optimized network fitting with limited computational resource budgets while delivers comparable accuracy level. In comparison with the best result on CIFAR-10 dataset, a generated network by ADONN presents up to 26.4 compression rate while loses only 4% accuracy. In addition, ADONN maps the generated DNN on the commodity programmable devices including ARM Processor, high-performance CPU, GPU, and FPGA.

An implementation of a cloud-based and traffic aware strategy for the management of base stations' activity is proposed, based in the load measurements timeseries analysis and estimating cell's coverage areas. The coverage&capacity cells pairs are such that the coveragecell covers the area served by the other. The strategy uses traffic analysis to identify periods in the day where capacitycells may be switched-off and traffic can be handed-over to the coverage-cells. For a realistic scenario of a country with 6578 cells, this strategy can be applied in 43% of the cells, resulting for this set in 37% energy saving and 900k€ OPEX reduction, and 2556 tons CO 2 emitions reduction yearly.

Multithread programming tools become popular for exploitation of high performance processing with the dissemination of multicore processors. In this context, it is also popular to exploit compiler optimization to improve the performance at execution time. In this work, we evaluate the performance achieved by the use of flags -O1, -O2, and -O3 of two C compilers (GCC and ICC) associated with five different APIs: Pthreads, C++11, OpenMP, Cilk Plus, and TBB. The experiments were performed on two distinct but compatible architectures (Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron). In our experiments, the use of optimization improves the performance independently from the API. We observe that the application scheduling performed by the programming interfaces providing an application level scheduler has more impact on the final performance than the optimizations.

Exponential increase and global access to read/write memory states in quantum computing simulation limit both the number of qubits and quantum transformations that can be currently simulated. Although quantum computing simulation is parallel by nature, spatial and temporal complexity are major performance hazards, making this an important application for HPC. A new methodology employing reduction and decomposition optimizations has shown great results, but its GPU implementation could be further improved. In this work, we intend to do a new implementation for in-situ GPU simulation that better explores its resources without requiring further HPC hardware. Shor's and Grover's algorithms are simulated and compared to the previous version and to LIQUi vertical bar >'s simulator, showing better results with relative speedups up to 15.5x and 765.76x respectively.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]).
