high performance computing (HPC) facilities serve as infrastructure for solving demanding computational problems met in various domains. HPC involves expensive resources both material and operational. Therefore, leveraging its operation at his peak capacity is very important from economic efficiency perspective. Nowadays, it is very difficult for a regular researcher that needs HPC services to have ease of access to such resources. With the work presented in this paper we propose and evaluate a different approach to HPC service by mapping the problem on the same bases as smart grid philosophy. Mainly, the same as smart grid tries to increase the efficiency of resource utilization together with the concept of co-generation, our proposed model tries to link powerful computational resources own by domestic user into a smart HPC service with for profit objectives.

Mesoscopic Traffic Simulation is an important tool in traffic analysis and traffic management support. The balance between traffic modeling details and performance has made Mesoscopic Traffic Simulation one of the key solutions for traffic controllers and policy makers. Mesoscopic traffic simulators offer acceptable speed in simulating normal traffic. However, when traffic prediction and optimization for large scale networks come into context, the performance of mesoscopic traffic simulators is unsatisfactory in optimizing a massive number of control parameters for a much longer prediction horizon. This issue again emphasizes the need to further speed up mesoscopic traffic simulation. This paper proposes a comprehensive framework to massively speed up mesoscopic traffic simulation using GPU without compromising its correctness and realistic modeling property. It also gives an in-depth analysis into the trade-off between simulation correctness and performance speedup. By combining the power of GPU with optimal design and data structures, mesoscopic traffic simulation is able to speed up to more than 6 times compared to original CPU implementation. © 2017 IEEE.

In this research, a system for classifying the gunfire sound has been studied. The system is designed to function with a smartphone, which has a limited resource. The input sound is converted from the analog format to the digital one. The digital gunfire sound is then processed and analyzed in frequency domain using the smartphone. It is shown that, with noise injection method, using Artificial Neural Network (or ANN) in the classification process, the obtained accuracy for classifying 6 different gunfire sounds is considerably increased compared to the results found in [1]. Additionally, in this work, the feature vector with different number of bins in frequency domain is deeply studied. It is found that with a proper number of bins in the classification, the classification accuracy is significantly improved. The 100%-accuracy can be achieved for the SNR down to 10 dB and a very high accuracy (that is, greater than 90%) can be obtained at the 0-dB SNR. Using an appropriate number of feature vectors can lead to a promising performance in terms of gunfire sound classification.

Aiming to keep under control a particular system or environment or to ensure that it works as expected there is a need to know what-when-why happens there. Various conditions and environmental factors can lead to errors, unexpected behavior or loss of control. To pursue these factors manually is time consuming, error prone, slow and usually quite expensive. Monitoring is quite complex and challenging activity, but with recent advances of technology in many areas there is a good premise for automating almost each activity in monitoring of any system, process, and environment. The basic activity of monitoring is gathering data, which with high degree of accuracy will make us more informed, more aware and will help us to take more correct decision. This paper shows the main questions identified while trying to design architecture for an OpenSmartWorld environment monitoring system, the main characteristics which this kind of system should have and the technologies and standards proposed to be used in order to support required functionalities.

The 21st century global computing infrastructure and electric power grid are undergoing fundamental changes due to an ever increasing demand for faster compute resources and reliable electric power. These critically linked infrastructures are already showing strain from the rapid development and relatively high electric power requirements from data center installation. Data centers have emerged as significant users of electric energy in the power grid. Recently in Ireland, the planned installation of multiple Microsoft data centers was delayed by a lack of electric power infrastructure, with the local utility requiring Microsoft to generate a portion of its own power until the power infrastructure is improved. Optimizing data center design, performance, and taking advantage of energy scheduling enables participation in electric markets. This panel will discuss novel solutions of such interesting topics including green data center design, performance co-optimization of energy and workload, electricity market participation of data centers, resource scheduling for energy efficiency, and the implementation of a large-scale industrial microgrid for a specialized data center load.

In this paper we present Mimir, a new implementation of MapReduce over MPI. Mimir inherits the core principles of existing MapReduce frameworks, such as MR-MPI, while redesigning the execution model to incorporate a number of sophisticated optimization techniques that achieve similar or better performance with significant reduction in the amount of memory used. Consequently, Mimir allows significantly larger problems to be executed in memory, achieving large performance gains. We evaluate Mimir with three benchmarks on two highend platforms to demonstrate its superiority compared with that of other frameworks.

Multi-disciplinary virtual prototype (MD IT) based on modeling and computer simulation technology has been applied in a wide range of engineering applications, especially the design, testing and evaluation of complex product. Generally, a large set of parameters need to be optimized to improve the performance of the prototype, which comprises a number of heterogeneous models from multiple domains. This calls for numerous collaborative simulation experiments in heterogeneous computing environments which are difficult to build and configure. Cloud simulation is a promising solution with the extremely large resource pool and dynamic construction of virtual computing environments. Thus this paper firstly proposed an optimization framework of MDVP which formulated the domain models, optimizer and the distributed interactive environment on cloud for mufti-disciplinary engineers. Then we designed the procedure for conducting parallel optimization of MDVP in the cloud simulation system by con-current execution of MDIP simulation system. The method proposed in the paper has been applied to a MDVP in the aerospace industry, which indicates that the proposed method can support an efficient engineering methodology that can transform the traditional centralized, serial simulation optimization to the distributed collaborative and parallel simulation optimization.

In this paper we present D.A.V.I.D.E. (Development for an Added Value Infrastructure Designed in Europe), an innovative and energy efficient high performance computing cluster designed by E4 computer Engineering for PRACE (Partnership for Advanced computing in Europe). D.A.V.I.D.E. is built using best-in-class components (IBM's POWER8-NVLink CPUs, NVIDIA TESLA P100 GPUs, Mellanox InfiniBand EDR 100 Gb/s networking) plus custom hardware and an innovative system middleware software. D.A.V.I.D.E. features (i) a dedicated power monitor interface, built around the BeagleBone Black Board that allows high frequency sampling directly from the power backplane and scalable integration with the internal node telemetry and system level power management software;(ii) a custom-built chassis, based on OpenRack form factor, and liquid cooling that allows the system to be used in modern, energy efficient, datacenter;(iii) software components designed for enabling fine grain power monitoring, power management (i.e. power capping and energy aware job scheduling) and application power profiling, based on dedicated machine learning components. Software APIs are offered to developers and users to tune the computing node performance and power consumption around on the application requirements. The first pilot system that we will deploy at the beginning of 2017, will demonstrate key HPC applications from different fields ported and optimized for this innovative platform.

The convolutional autoencoder (CAE) was proposed on convolutional neural network (CNN) and denoising autoencoder (DAE). CAE can address the corrupted input samples and high dimensional problem. However, CAE has a shortcoming involving a large training timescale because the parameters of network are commonly tuned by gradient descent (GD) learning method. In order to alleviate this problem, this paper proposed a fast convolutional denoising autoencoder based extreme learning machine (ELM), called fast convolutional denoising autoencoder (FCDA). In FCDA, the random convolutional hidden nodes are used to reduce the dimension of input data. After that, the proposed denoising ELM autoencoder is used to reconstruct the cleaned data. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method not only speeds up the traditional CAE, but it also outperforms the CAE algorithm in terms of reconstruction error. Moreover, we applied the proposed method FCDA as the pre-processing method for ML-ELM classifier. The results illustrate the combination of the proposed FCDA, and ML-ELM achieves the classification performance better than the comparative methods. © 2017 IEEE.

In this study, we provide an extensive survey on wide spectrum of scheduling methods for multitasking among graphics processing unit (GPU) computing tasks. We then design several schedulers and explain in detail the selected methods we have developed to implement our scheduling strategies. Next, we compare the performance of schedulers on various workloads running on Fermi and Kepler architectures and arrive at the following major conclusions: (1) Small kernels benefit from running kernels concurrently. (2) The combination of small kernels, high-priority kernels with longer runtimes, and lower-priority kernels with shorter runtimes benefits from a CPU scheduler that dynamically changes kernel order on the Fermi architecture. (3) Because of limitations of existing GPU architectures, currently CPU schedulers outperform their GPU counterparts. We also provide results and observations obtained from implementing and evaluating our schedulers on the NVIDIA Jetson TX1 system-on-chip architecture. We observe that although TX1 has the newer Maxwell architecture, the mechanism used for scheduler timings behaves differently on TX1 compared to Kepler leading to incorrect timings. In this paper, we describe our methods that allow us to report correct timings for CPU schedulers running on TX1. Finally, we propose new research directions involving the investigation of additional scheduling strategies.
