A qualitative study is made of the image reconstruction capabilities of binary phase-only filters (BPOFs) and the binary Hartley phase-only filters (BHPOFs). It is found that the BPOF and BHPOF reconstruct edge-enhanced versions of the original object functions and that the image reconstruction of the BHPOF is better than that of the BPOF. However, for some applications such as optical interconnections, edge enhanced reconstruction is not desirable. Filled image reconstruction is achieved by using a Gaussian apodized mask on the BPOF and BHPOF. Also, a real-time hybrid optical system for such filled image reconstruction is presented.

A new image coding technique for achieving an extremely high compression ratio while producing good image quality is described. The idea is analogous to that used in forensic applications when constructing a composite image of a criminal from a collection of images of facial features. The input image is segmented into complicated primitives that are coded using a previously constructed database of primitives. A duplicate database is used at the receiver to decode the primitives. The decoded primitives are assembled as in computer animation to produce a faithful reconstruction of the original image. The technique has been applied to head-and-shoulders images and compression ratios over 1000:1 have been achieved.

This paper proposes a Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) algorithm for simultaneous motion estimation and object segmentation using the stochastic diffusion. The stochastic diffusion is a new optimization method to search for the solutions in the MAP estimation. It diffuses the Gibbs potential space with the complete stochastic characteristics of the neighboring fields. The stochastic diffusion shows better performances in the senses of regularization of the estimated fields, robustness of noise, and fast convergence. In the paper, the stochastic diffusion is formulated to perform the simultaneous correspondence estimation and object segmentation. The line field is also included to improve the detection of the boundaries. According to the some experiments, the stochastic diffusion has good segmentation performance. Especially, the segmentation are improved at the boundaries by combination of correspondence and line field, and multiple objects are extracted at the same time.

Today's reticle inspection tools can provide a wealth of information about defects. We introduce here a system called DIVAS: Defect Inspection Viewing, Archiving, and Simulation that fully uses and efficiently manages this wealth of defect information. In this paper, we summarize the features of DIVAS and describe in more detail PRIMADONNA, one of its components. Current reticle defect specifications are based, primarily, on defect size. Shrinking design rules, increasing MEEF and use of Optical Enhancement Techniques cause size to be an inadequate criterion for disposition. Furthermore, visual disposition of defects is not automated, strictly reproducible, or directly tied to wafer lithography. To compensate for these inadequacies, reticle specifications are set conservatively adding direct and hidden costs to the manufacturing process. PRIMADONNA, utilizing PROLITH(TM) as the simulation engine, retrieves all defect and reference images saved from a KLA-Tencor SLF77 inspection tool and processes them through a series of increasingly rigorous simulation stages. These include pre-filtering, aerial image formation, and post filtration. Difference metrics are used to quantify a defect's wafer impact. We will report results comparing PRIMADONNA decisions to manual STM classifications for a significant volume of inspections. Correlation between PRIMADONNA results and AIMs(TM) metrology will be presented.
