Recently, investigations on medical imaging have been indicating a strong correlation between cases of cancers and the increasing number of Computed Tomography (CT) exams, mainly due to high radiation doses to which patients are exposed during the data acquisition process. Thus, there is a need to reduce the radiation doses whereas still keeping satisfactory quality images for diagnosis. In this paper, we propose to filter noise in CT images using contextual versions of Wiener Filter such as Generalized Wiener Filter (GWF) and Non Local Means approach for parameter estimation. Experiments show that the proposed methods are promising, since they provide good results with no significant increase in the computational cost. © 2012 IEEE.

We use mixed-precision technique, which is used to exploit the high single precision performance of modern processors, to build the first sparse mixed-precision linear programming solver on the Cell BE processor. The technique is used to enhance the performance of an LP IPM-based solver by implementing mixed-precision sparse Cholesky factorization, the most time consuming part of LP solvers. Moreover, we implemented sparse matrix multiplication of the form required by the solver as it is also very time consuming for some LP problems. Implemented on the Cell BE processor (Playstation 3) and tested using Netlib data sets, our LP solver achieved a maximum speedup of 2.9 just by using the mixedprecision technique. Moreover, we found that some problems, especially in final iterations, result in ill-conditioned matrices where mixed-precision can not be used. As a result, the solver needs to switch to double-precision if a more accurate solution of an LP problem is required. © 2010 IEEE.

Quantum computing offers parallel processing capabilities and resource-saving advantages, particularly useful for managing expansive datasets and complex image processing tasks. Grayscale images, being the simplest single-channel image mode, are frequently employed in artificial intelligence training. Before actual image applications, various image processing operations are typically required. However, the restoration of a grayscale image of dimensions 2n × 2n after a series of linear transformations poses a challenge. Existing methods typically involve finding the inverse of the most recent linear transformation or re-encoding the image followed by repeated operations until the final transformation, resulting in excessive computational overhead and disconnection from subsequent quantum grayscale image applications. To address this issue, we propose a universal quantum linear restoration algorithm for grayscale image, denoted as QLR, which effectively bridges the stages of linear transformation and subsequent image applications. QLR reduces the time complexity from O(2n) to O(n) compared to classical counterpart. Building upon the QLR algorithm, we further propose two quantum resource-optimized compression methods for optional lossless image storage. Combining with other quantum algorithms and techniques, we design a framework (QGIP) aimed at bridging the processes of quantum grayscale image processing and applications. Experiments simulated on the IBM Quantum platform validate the correctness and efficiency of our proposal. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a semiautomatic method for the identification of immunohistochemical (IHC) staining in digitized samples. The user trains the system by selecting on a sample image some typical positive stained regions that will be used as a reference for the construction of a distance metric. In this learning process, the global optimum is obtained by induction employing higher polynomial terms of the Mahalanobis distance, extracting nonlinear features of the IHC pattern distributions. The results of the proposed method showed a high correlation to a pathologist's manual analysis, which was used as a golden standard, presenting a more robust discrimination between stained and non-stained areas with little bias.

In this work, we present an approach for tracking the feet of multiple users in CAVE-like systems with under-floor projection. It is based on low-cost consumer cameras, does not require users to wear additional equipment, and can be installed without modifying existing components. If the brightness of the floor projection does not contain too much variation, the feet of several people can be reliably tracked and assigned to individuals.

This paper explores the usefulness of the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) for medical image processing. Medical image processing often entails dealing with a large number of high resolution images, requiring a large amount of computational power to process. The PS3 is powered by the Cell Broadband Engine, a microprocessor created by IBM, capable of rapid numeric computation with low power requirements that has helped the unit to become a popular gaming unit. The unit can be repurposed as a low-cost high performance computing platform. In order to demonstrate the computational abilities of the PS3, several basic image processing tasks are implemented and compared with desktop PCs, equipped with general-purpose microprocessors. This article describes lessons learned in the process of building some fundamental image processing tasks. The article also describes the architecture of the Cell Broadband Engine and provides information about developing applications given the architecture. The article also provides an introduction to setting up a highperformance image processing environment with a cluster of such relatively inexpensive PS3 units. © 2009 IEEE.

Approximate computing in recent times has emerged as a popular alternative to conventional computing techniques. Fault-tolerant applications in the domains of machine learning, signal processing, and computer vision have shown promising results using approximate computing. Approximations on adders and multipliers have been widely proposed in literature and innovations on that front are still a necessity so as to target specific applications. In this paper, an approximate carry-lookahead adder (ACLA) is proposed which makes use of an intelligent approach for judging the carry of subsequent stages. Also, a correction mechanism is proposed so as to hinder substantial accuracy loss. Experimental results show that ACLA is faster than the traditional ripple-carry adder by 70.5% for 32-bit configurations on an average. In terms of accuracy, for 32-bit configurations, ACLA outperforms other state-of-the-art adders such as SARA [1] and BCSA [2] by 51%.

An efficient subband implementation of the channelized Hotelling observer is presented, which can be used to assess the image quality of images compressed with wavelet-based techniques. The channelized Hotelling model observer has been shown to predict human performance in detecting signals in noise-limited images. The model observer can also predict degradation of human performance due to lossy compressed images. This provides a more relevant image quality assessment for medical images, where the image's value is in supporting clinical decisions, than metrics such as mean square error. The subband implementation sbown is unique in that it operates on channel responses of the wavelet subbands rather than on the entire image itself. The technique is extendable to operate on the channel response of the subband bitmaps, which would permit bit ordering optimized for human performance. © 2002 IEEE.

Digital image processing in the field of time-lapse microscopy and biological research has been an interesting research area to provide statistical data of cellular dynamics to the field of cell biology. Digital image processing enables rapid and consistent quantification of qualitative observations. The image processing model examined here provides a tool for the biologists to identify structures called retraction fibers (RF) that are formed during Epithelial-Mesenchyme Transition (EMT), an important developmental process which also occurs during cancer metastasis. Quantifying RF formation is an important tool for biologists studying cellular regulation of EMT. The dynamic EMT process is captured using time-lapse microscopy. We use computer vision algorithms to detect and track the RF in image sequences of cells undergoing EMT to generate statistical information such as the number of RF formed during a window, lifetime of the RF, and their geometric dimension. This information can in turn be used by the biologist to quantitatively measure the extent of EMT under different test conditions. ©2009 IEEE.

Consumers of personal devices such as desktops, tablets, or smart phones run applications based on image or video processing, as they enable a natural computer-user interaction. The challenge with these computationally demanding applications is to execute them efficiently. One way to address this problem is to use on-chip heterogeneous systems, where tasks can execute in the device where they run more efficiently. In this paper, we discuss the optimization of a feature tracking application, written in OpenCL, when running on an on-chip heterogeneous platform. Our results show that OpenCL can facilitate programming of these heterogeneous systems because it provides a unified programming paradigm and at the same time can deliver significant performance improvements. We show that, after optimization, our feature tracking application runs 3.2, 2.6, and 4.3 times faster and consumes 2.2, 3.1, and 2.7 times less energy when running on the multicore, the GPU, or both the CPU and the GPU of an Intel i7, respectively. © 2014 IEEE.
