We present a method to efficiently simulate fluid flows through tubular structures such as pipes and blood vessels. The method relies on the structure's centerline and for that purpose we present an algorithm to generate an approximate centerline of a tubular structure defined by an ordinary polygonal mesh. As an additional benefit, this center-line provides approximations of measures about the tubular structure such as length of regions of interest and cross-section diameters. The fluid is simulated with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method and the fluid-structure interaction is simplified to provide interactive rates. The particles can be colored according to physical quantities to better visualize the evolution of the fluid's state in narrow and otherwise obstructed areas.

The growing need for high-frame-rate projectors in the fields of dynamic projection mapping (DPM) and three-dimensional (3D) displays has increased. Conventional methods allow for an increase in the frame rate to as much as 2,841 frames per second (fps) for 8-bit image projection, using digital light processing (DLP) technology when the minimum digital mirror device (DMD) control time is 44 mu s. However, this rate needs to be further augmented to suit specific applications. In this study, we developed a novel high-frame-rate projection method, which divides the bit depth of an image among multiple projectors and simultaneously projects them in synchronization. The simultaneously projected bit images are superimposed such that a high-bit-depth image is generated within a reduced single-frame duration. Additionally, we devised an optimization process to determine the system parameters necessary for attaining maximum brightness. We constructed a prototype system utilizing two high-frame-rate projectors and validated the feasibility of using our system to project 8-bit images at a rate of 5,600 fps. Furthermore, the quality assessment of our projected image exhibited superior performance in comparison to a dithered image.

We consider a family of strings called closed strings and a related array of Longest Closed Factors (LCF). We show that the reconstruction of a string from its LCF array is easier than the construction and verification of this array. Moreover, the reconstructed string is unique. We improve also the time of construction/verification, reducing it from O(n log n/log log n) (the best previously known) to O(n root log n). We use connections between the LCF array and the longest previous/next factor arrays.

image descriptions are crucial in assisting individuals without eyesight by providing verbal representations of visual content. While manual and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated descriptions exist, automatic description generators have not fully met the needs of visually impaired People. In this study, we have examined the problems related to image descriptions reported in existing literature using the Snowballing technique. Through this method, we have identified thirteen issues, including ethical concerns surrounding physical appearance, gender and identity, race, and disability. Furthermore, we have identified five reasons why sighted Individuals often fail to provide descriptions for visual content, highlighting the necessity for accessibility campaigns that raise awareness about the social significance of descriptive sentences. We conducted interviews with eight low-vision volunteers, in which we analyzed the characteristics of descriptive sentences for 25 indoor images and gathered participants' expectations regarding image descriptions. As a result, we propose a set of Good Practices for writing descriptive sentences aimed to assist automatic tools and sighted Individuals in generating more satisfactory and high-quality image descriptions. We hope our results will emphasize the societal importance of imagery descriptions and inspire the community to pursue further interdisciplinary research to address the issues identified in our study. © 2023 ACM.

Traditional super-resolution processing computes sub-pixel alignment over a sequence of image captures to allow sampling at a finer spatial resolution. Alternatively, the mechanism intended to implement in-body image stabilization (IBIS) can be used to shift the sensor in a stationary camera by precise fractions of a pixel between exposures. The implicitly perfect alignment of pixel-shift images reduces post-processing to interleaving of raw data, but motion of camera or scene elements produces disturbing artifacts. Determining misalignments on raw images from cameras using color filter array (CFA) sensors is potentially problematic, so the synthesized super-resolution image is instead typically built from already-interpolated image data, with a reduction in tonal quality. The current work instead directly models the certainty, or confidence, with which pixel values are known. Sub-pixel alignment may be computed on either raw or interpolated image data. Still, only the underlying raw samples have precisely known values, so only they are used to compute the super-resolution image. However, primarily due to motion, even raw pixel values can have variable value certainty. Thus, a confidence metric is calculated for each raw pixel value and used as a weighting factor in computing the best estimate for the value of each super-resolution pixel. © 2024 Society for Imaging Science and Technology. High performance computing is experiencing a major paradigm shift with the introduction of accelerators, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and Intel Xeon Phi (MIC). These processors have made available a tremendous computing power at low cost, and are transforming machines into hybrid systems equipped with CPUs and accelerators. Although these systems can deliver a very high peak performance, making full use of its resources in real-world applications is a complex problem. Most current applications deployed to these machines are still being executed in a single processor, leaving other devices underutilized. In this paper we explore a scenario in which applications are composed of hierarchical dataow tasks which are allocated to nodes of a distributed memory machine in coarse-grain, but each of them may be composed of several ner-grain tasks which can be allocated to dierent devices within the node. We propose and implement novel performance aware scheduling techniques that can be used to allocate tasks to devices. We evaluate our techniques using a pathology image analysis application used to investigate brain cancer morphology, and our experimental evaluation shows that the proposed scheduling strategies signicantly outperforms other ecient scheduling techniques, such as Heterogeneous Earliest Finish Time - HEFT, in cooperative executions using CPUs, GPUs, and Masc. also experimentally show that our strategies are less sensitive to inaccuracy in the scheduling input data and that the performance gains are maintained as the application scales. © 2014 IEEE.

Fully Connected Neural Network (FCNN) are widely used in image recognition and natural language processing. However, the time cost of training large datasets is high. Optical Network-on Chip (ONoC) has been proposed to accelerate the parallel computing of FCNN because of its advantages. Therefore, this paper proposes an accelerated FCNN model based on ONoC. We first design an FCNN-aware mapping strategy, and then propose a group-based inter-core communication scheme with low wavelength requirements according to the distribution of mapping cores. The optimal number of cores in each period is obtained by achieving the trade-off between the communication and computation time. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme has the advantages of low wavelength requirement, short training time and good scalability. © 2024 IEEE.

The estimation of multiple orientations in multidimensional signals is a strongly non-linear problem to which a two-step solution is here presented. First, the problem is linearized by introducing the so-called mixed-orientation parameters as a unique, albeit implicit, descriptor of the orientations. Second, the non-linearities are decomposed such as to find the individual orientations. For two-dimensional signals, e.g., images, this decomposition step is solved by simply determining the roots of a polynomial. For multi-dimensional signals, the nd decomposition problem is solved by reducing it to a cascade of 2D decomposition problems. In this way, a full solution for the estimation of any number of orientations in any dimension is achieved for the first time

Few-shot image classification is a challenging task that aims to recognize image classes based on only a few training images. However, existing methods face the following two main challenges: (1) Ignoring the frequency domain information during image feature extraction. (2) It does not take the semantic gap between multiple modalities into consideration, which limits the classification performance. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel method named Spatial-Frequency Integration Network with Dual Prompt Learning for few-shot image classification. Firstly, we introduce a spatial-frequency integration module that combines spatial domain and low-frequency information to extract discriminative image features from the image modality. Secondly, we design a dual prompting module, which integrates learnable prompts and hand-crafted prompts to improve the generalization of applications to new classes. Thirdly, we propose an image-text interaction module to enhance inter-modal complementary and consistency. Both theoretical and experimental validations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in few-shot image classification. © 2024 IEEE.

One of the major challenges in the field of medical image classification is the class imbalance. This imbalance seriously affects the accuracy and reliability of the classifier, posing potential risks to doctors' diagnosis and treatment. In this paper, we propose a medical image classification model: DiffMB-BSA, designed to address the class imbalance issue in medical image classification. The DiffMB-BSA consists of three key components: (1) the generative model DiffMB based on Mamba and DDPM;(2) the Boundary Sampling Algorithm;and (3) the interaction synthesis mechanism. Specifically, DiffMB leverages Mamba's global modeling capabilities and linear computational efficiency to improve the quality of samples generated by DDPM. BSA is a training sample selection strategy based on boundary sampling that enables the diffusion model to focus more on class boundary regions when fitting the sample distribution. Finally, the interactive idea motivates DiffMB to generate instances against the classifier's defects through the interaction between the generative model and the classifier. Numerical experiments based on the HAM10000 show that the proposed method improves the Macro-F1, MCC, and B-ACC metrics by 0.74%, 0.39%, and 0.64%, compared to the state-of-the-art model. © 2024 IEEE.
