Pace code, a new technique for the shape coding in object-based image technology is presented in this article. It is a lossless, contour-based scheme in which contour pels on the shape contour curve are encoded directly. Similar to the well-known chain code, our method encodes the spatial relation between pels on the neighboring shape contour curve, but it uses a concept called pace which records the relationship differently. Experiment result shows that the proposed algorithm has the best coding efficiency among most contour-based schemes and requires low coding computation.

We investigate a method to obtain accurate 3D measurements and we compare it with a standard photogrammetry method. The method utilizes a closed-loop to bring the point under measure in the middle of the two images of a stereo pair. It uses poor calibrated cameras and the accuracy of the measurements relies on the high resolution of the stereo head encoders and on its calibration as well. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method is more accurate than the standard photogrammetry method, as well as it is more robust to small variations of the initial position of the cameras.

Principal component (PCA) and multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) are applied to magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) images in multiple sclerosis (MS). PCA and MDA are used to characterise subtle diffuse changes in MS. PCA is applied to MTR histograms to identify regions of significant variation. These areas are indicated as possible lesion areas. We compare two classifiers to recognise differences between normal controls and different types of MS disease; a Bayesian classifier is trained in PC space, and the histogram space is transformed to the optimal discriminant space for a nearest neighbor classifier.

An NTSC RS-170 standard image of a dynamic scene usually exhibits a 60-Hz flicker when displayed on a CRT. This is because the two interlaced fields of the image are captured 1/60 of a second apart, and the scene has changed slightly in that interval. It is shown how a shift between the two fields of a time-varying image can be accurately measured and corrected using optical flow techniques of imageprocessing. Experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed field-shift correction algorithm.

The problem addressed is how to use transputer networks for imageprocessing. As is well known, SIMD (single instruction/multiple data) or MIMD (multiple instruction/multiple data) architectures are very useful in parallel computing. The authors describe how to use transputers as an SIMD or MIMD machine to implement parallel imageprocessing. Several image-processing algorithms, including Laplacian of Gaussian, edge detection, region labeling, generalized Hough transform, and thinning, have been tested. The authors maintain that transputer-based systems are suitable for real-time imageprocessing. It is also pointed out that, compared with the other parallel machines, transputer systems can provide high performance and more flexibility with relatively low cost.

The main purpose of this work is to analyze and interpret the X-ray image by using some knowledge base that relates objects within a scene to one another and to the scene background. Knowledge-based image Analysis System (KIAS) is a prototype environment for image analysis and interpretation. KIAS consists of an imageprocessing system and an expert system. It oversees image preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, knowledge representation, and object interpretation. An automatic segmentation algorithm is used to minimize a human inspector's intervention in the imageprocessing system, and a rule-based approach is used in the expert system.
