This paper present the results of on study based on a questionnaire about the use of ICTs in the environment of e-learning in Mozambique, having as study object the Catholic University of Mozambique (CUM). For this purpose, 600 forms were sent to the participants (students of CUM) through the Google form. We received back 203 questionnaires, wherein 186 of the sample was selected on a confidence-basis of 90% with an error margin of 5%;The results show that the majority of online students live in provincial capitals and in rural areas and often use ICTs, in daily life as well as for the academic activities. In order to accomplish a quality e-learning there should be taken into account, in addition to the education programmes, the issue of basic infrastructure such as the electric power, the internet access and speed of platforms and the possession of mobile devices connected to network and skills of the end users.

In this work we present the details on the initiative that has been taken by the Walter Booth School of engineering Practice and Technology at McMaster University to inculcate multi-disciplinary project-based learning activities into the undergraduate curriculum. The approach aims to form groups of students from the different educational backgrounds at the school to solve engineering related problems focusing on building competencies in the students. Specifically, students from three disciplines, namely, Biotechnology, Manufacturing and Automation engineering Technology are grouped to develop a biosensing platform to detect antibiotics in food. Students from each program will be contributing to a part of the project for which they have developed competencies in their courses. We present a framework to be followed to implement such initiatives, and the expected outcomes and the skills that the students are expected to gain.

The article deals with extracurricular activities that are considered to strengthen the interaction between the students and provide the essential skills for teamwork, conflict management and leadership. Traditional intelligent recognition algorithm models of insulators are large and mostly completed by back-end servers, with large data transmission volume, high power consumption and poor real-time performance at the front and rear ends. In this paper, a miniature SSD convolutional neural network model is designed to enable it to be deployed in embedded edge computing devices and to recognize video images of insulators. Firstly, the low-latitude Core convolution group subnetwork is used to replace the high-latitude VGG network to extract the shallow features of the insulator, and then the auxiliary feature extraction subnetwork is used to predict the target, so as to reduce the number of model parameters. The model weight files generated by the training were transplanted to the edge computing platform of Jetson nano equipped with vision sensor. OpenCV was used to extract frames from the video images captured by vision sensor every 1 ms and real-time recognition performance was compared under different video resolutions. Experimental results show that the scheme reduces data transmission and realizes low delay recognition. The average recognition frame rate of insulator video images is 16.8 FPS and 19.7 FPS respectively at 1280*720 and 640*480 resolutions. The recognition process is relatively smooth and the recognition accuracy can reach 91.53%. The energy consumption of the whole identification process is less than 5W, which is an order of magnitude lower than that of traditional servers. © 2021 The Institution of engineering and Technology.

This paper presents a novel approach for generating 3D talking heads from raw audio inputs. Our method grounds on the idea that speech related movements can be comprehensively and efficiently described by the motion of a few control points located on the movable parts of the face, i.e., landmarks. The underlying musculoskeletal structure then allows us to learn how their motion influences the geometrical deformations of the whole face. The proposed method employs two distinct models to this aim: the first one learns to generate the motion of a sparse set of landmarks from the given audio. The second model expands such landmarks motion to a dense motion field, which is utilized to animate a given 3D mesh in neutral state. Additionally, we introduce a novel loss function, named Cosine Loss, which minimizes the angle between the generated motion vectors and the ground truth ones. Using landmarks in 3D talking head generation offers various advantages such as consistency, reliability, and obviating the need formanual-annotation. Our approach is designed to be identity-agnostic, enabling high-quality facial animations for any users without additional data or training. Code and models are available at: S2L+S2D.

This study aims to explore whether the suggested inter-curricular STE-SAL-M approach can take STEM a step further in science teaching and learning. More specifically, the research looks into the extent to which the suggested STE-SAL-M approach can facilitate science concepts learning, and enhance creativity, attitude and interest in education. What is more, the study aims to investigate whether this approach can raise learners' awareness towards a holistic view of learning. The study is based on a project method called "being strong-eating healthy-changing your life". Six schools participated in the research with114 primary school learners altogether. To provide possible answers for the research questions class observations and two focus groups were conducted, one with the teachers and one with the learners. The data received and analyzed with the content analysis method indicate a positive attitude towards STE-SAL-M, which is described as authentic, innovative, linked to real life process and facilitates the understanding of science and all disciplines involved.

In this paper, we describe the experience at Smart India Hackathon 2019, a nationwide initiative to provide students a platform to solve some of pressing problems we face in our daily lives, and thus inculcate a culture of product innovation and a mindset of problem solving. The Team 'AndroDigi' was shortlisted for Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2019 which was held on 2nd and 3rd March 2019. The team built a solution for Problem Statement "App based valuation and report generation" under Aich Appraisers Auctioneers Organization. Nodal Centre for this team was Chandigarh Groups of Colleges, Landran Mohali. In this study, we analyzed student's perceptions and experience in a hackathon where they were to design a concept for an application for automation for asset valuation report generation. A team of 6 students (3 girls & 3 boys) was selected form 380 teams all over India. By collecting data through questionnaires and interviewing the participants, we applied descriptive statistics rather than exploring into inferential statistics to analyze the data due to the limited number of students. In the end, the results show that the use of hackathon helped in achieving the learning goals and inculcating problem solving mindset. The students expressed their satisfaction in the fact that it provided them with motivation to learn through practice. Also, students agreed that the event helped them to think collaboratively for refined ideas. The overwhelming satisfaction expressed by the students goes to confirm that hackathon brings out the best creative skills from people through problem-solving.

Attitude stabilization is of paramount importance in the flight control of personal aerial vehicle (PAV) in the future urban air mobility (UAM). This study proposes to adopt a deep neural network (DNN) with exponentially stabilizing control Lyapunov functions (es-CLF) as a control framework (called, es-DNLC) for the stabilization of a KP-1 eVTOL PAV in multi-copter mode. The es-DNLC uses exponentially stabilizing control Lyapunov Function(es-CLF) as a learning policy in the DNN training to guarantee the robustness against disturbances. The robustness is enhanced and verified by an area increase of region of attraction (ROA) after adopting the trained DNN into the KP-1 control system. We implemented the proposed control framework in an open source autopilot system (PX4) along with software in the loop (SITL) in Gazebo simulator in which a wind gust is injected as a sudden disturbance in the simulation. A wind tunnel test was performed to increase the accuracy of the Gazebo simulation by utilizing high-fidelity propulsion data of the KP-1’s motors. The effectiveness of the adopted control framework is compared with linear quadratic regulator (LQR) which is also the initial control of es-DNLC before training. The finding of this study shows that es-DNLC compared to LQR can guarantee a higher level of robustness of the system against disturbances and aerodynamic uncertainties.

Recently, the topology control solutions that use static transmission power, transmission range, and link quality, might not be useful. The objective of this paper adapts the transmission power to be adjusted with external changes by applying a machine learning algorithms. We develop a traffic signature algorithm based on traffic clusters of the network sites that have the same behavior then we predict their upcoming changes and correspondingly. The contribution of this work is using this model to create an optimal power distribution function based on traffic load. Furthermore, we propose a new algorithm that deals with all clusters and determines the optimal number of links at each hour to minimize network resources. As an illustration, results show that the proposed solution can compute coefficients of the power distribution function at each group and their needed resources.

The research objective aims to improve the pre-service teachers' professional competencies using the project-based DAPOA learning model for engineering education. The project-based learning model is important to encourage learners to have knowledge skills and attitude in professional occupation consistent to the 21st century learning skills. The important learning skills consist of life and career skills, learning and innovation skills, information media and technology skills. Moreover, in educating technology and engineering, active learning is necessary to promote students to have essential skills in industry and education sectors. The developed project-based DAPOA learning model is an active learning that can encourage students to have knowledge and skills by searching, working in team, problem solving, communicating and etc. In this paper, the improvement of the teachers' professional competencies using the project-based learning for developing pre-service teachers was proposed and the efficiency of learning and teaching management and internship was evaluated.
