The proposed Context Driven Indoor Localization Framework aims to implement a standard for indoor localization to address the multiple needs in different indoor environments with a specific focus to contribute towards Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) in the Future of Smart Homes for healthy aging of the rapidly increasing elderly population. This framework has multiple functionalities. First, it presents the methodology to analyze any given IoT-based environment, in terms of spatial information, to classify it into specific zones or functional areas based on the activities performed by users with different environment parameters in those respective zones. Second, it discusses the approach to analyze the macro and micro level user interactions with context parameters for any user in the given IoT environment. Finally, it possesses the methodology to track user interactions, analyze and access the Big data associated with these interactions and map the user to a specific zone or area in the given IoT-based environment using a learning model. To evaluate the efficacy of this framework, it has been implemented on a dataset related to performing different activities in IoT-based settings. The results presented and discussed uphold the relevance and potential for real-time implementation of this framework for addressing multiple needs associated with aging in smart homes as well as for various other applications of indoor localization in different environments and contexts. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

As the most widely used solution for intelligent manufacturing, the Distributed Numerical Control (DNC) system faces with various novel attack opportunities caused by increasing connection to industrial ethernet and external interfaces. Attackers can easily fabricate packets between machine tools and Machine data Collection (MDC) server. This may threaten not only processing tasks and production logic but also physical safety and business efficiency. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is seen as a promising solution to these problems. However, existing device identifier used by IDS (e.g. IP and MAC) can be forged easily. In order to address this problem, we propose a fingerprinting method (Spatial-Temporal Feature Fingerprint, STFF) enabling identification of machine tools. The fingerprint is a vector composed of spatial and temporal features extracted from payload grayscale image, which is constructed with all payloads in a polling period. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network are used to extract spatial and temporal features from payload grayscale image respectively. Finally, a real-world unencrypted data set with two vendors (three models for each) of machine tools is used to verify the performance of the fingerprinting method. Our evaluation experiments show that the STFF could be a unique identifier to describe the communication relationship between machine tools and MDC server. © 2020 IEEE.

We discuss the role of perceptron (or threshold) connectives in the context of Description Logic, and in particular their possible use as a bridge between statistical learning of models from data and logical reasoning over knowledge bases. We prove that such connectives can be added to the language of most forms of Description Logic without increasing the complexity of the corresponding inference problem. We show, with a practical example over the Gene Ontology, how even simple instances of perceptron connectives are expressive enough to represent learned, complex concepts derived from real use cases. This opens up the possibility to import concepts learnt from data into existing ontologies. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Nowadays, the accurate analysis of energy consumption has become vital for the development of efficient energy projects as well as, for demonstrating the consumptive behavior of the energy consumers in the system. The importance of this analysis comes from many reasons, one of them is that it leads to a better understanding of the system components. This paper presents a clustering algorithm for residential energy consumption using the K-Means algorithm in two different approaches. The dataset utilized in this article contains energy consumption features selected from 25 houses over a period of two years. Firstly, data cleaning has been used to remove and eliminate the inconsistent data, secondly the Elbow method has been applied to determine the optimal number of clusters before using the K-means approach for the purpose of clustering. In K-means, the data have been clustered into two different approaches. The first one is clustering the daily mean consumption in each season in each year. The second one is clustering the monthly mean consumption over the two years. Finally, data visualization has been applied in order to present the result of our proposed method. The paper finds that the households have different consumption behaviors in different seasons, days, and months and that it is due to the change of the average temperature in each season as well as the different appliances and consumptive patters of each house. The results are representative and match the aim of the paper. Further, they are significant for the further development of the energy system and efficient for tracking the consumption of the houses. Finally, the results of this paper are going to be used after running the algorithm again with a different number of clusters to compare the results and find new insights in the data that might affect the decision.

With continuous development and application of computer vision, images with high clarity and quality are increasingly important in training different kinds of models, especially in the field of automated driving and road safety monitoring. In this paper, through learning on the benchmarking dataset, we propose a novel quadratic model of color attenuation prior to calculate the scene depth map and then obtain the transmission matrix and restore the hazy-free image. Numerous experimental results show that the proposed approach is more accurate on sculpt the correlation between scene brightness, saturation and depth, therefore it outperforms the linear model in terms of both dehazing effect and clarity. Meanwhile, the objective and subjective comparison with the other state-of-the-art algorithms on the hazy images demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method.

We consider a scenario involving computations over a massive dataset stored distributedly across multiple workers, which is at the core of distributed learning algorithms. We propose Lagrange Coded Computing (LCC), a new framework to simultaneously provide (1) resiliency against stragglers that may prolong computations;(2) security against Byzantine (or malicious) workers that deliberately modify the computation for their benefit;and (3) (information-theoretic) privacy of the dataset amidst possible collusion of workers. LCC, which leverages the well-known Lagrange polynomial to create computation redundancy in a novel coded form across workers, can be applied to any computation scenario in which the function of interest is an arbitrary multivariate polynomial of the input dataset, hence covering many computations of interest in machine learning. LCC significantly generalizes prior works to go beyond linear computations. It also enables secure and private computing in distributed settings, improving the computation and communication efficiency of the state-of-the-art. Furthermore, we prove the optimality of LCC by showing that it achieves the optimal tradeoff between resiliency, security, and privacy, i.e., in terms of tolerating the maximum number of stragglers and adversaries, and providing data privacy against the maximum number of colluding workers. Finally, we show via experiments on Amazon EC2 that LCC speeds up the conventional uncoded implementation of distributed least-squares linear regression by up to 13.43×, and also achieves a 2.36×-12.65× speedup over the state-of-the-art straggler mitigation strategies. © Copyright 2019 by the author(s).

The increase in the cost of healthcare is a worldwide challenge. It has thus become essential to understand the nature and the weight of the factors that influence it and to foresee its future changes in order to ensure good governance, improve hospital management of material and financial resources and therefore be ready to face emergency situations such as the ongoing global pandemic. Using Python programming language, different supervised machine learning algorithms, were tested on a dataset extracted from digital medical records of hospitalized patients in the infectious diseases department at Sfax university hospital (Tunisia). Different models for predicting the hospitalization cost of a patient upon admission were created and evaluated after having processed and analyzed the collected data. This dataset initially comprised 542 observations and 136 variables including 36 quantitative ones and 100 dummy variables. Two variable selection methods were applied and subgroups of independent variables with different semantic meanings were also used. Despite few shortcomings such as missing data, the most precise of the different tested prediction models was that of 15th degree multiple linear regression. Regressors were the season of the period of hospitalization, suspected diagnosis and patient characteristics such as gender. When applied in reality, this tool would make it possible to predict the hospitalization cost and therefore forecast precise budgets. However, technical improvements remain to be made in order to optimize the quality of this tool and other algorithms could be tested to further broaden this study. The generalization of the implementation and use of well-developed digital medical records would allow the production of more complete databases from which better prediction models could be generated.

There are numerous approximate color transforms reported in the literature that aim to reduce display power consumption by imperceptibly changing the color content of displayed images. To be practical, these techniques need to be content-aware in picking transformation parameters to preserve perceptual quality. This work presents a computationally-efficient method for calculating a parameter lower bound for approximate color transform parameters based on the content to be transformed. We conduct a user study with 62 participants and 6,400 image pair comparisons to derive the proposed solution. We use the user study results to predict this lower bound reliably with a 1.6% mean squared error by using simple image-color-based heuristics. We show that these heuristics have Pearson and Spearman rank correlation coefficients greater than 0.7 (p<0.01) and that our model generalizes beyond the data from the user study. The user study results also show that the color transform is able to achieve up to 50% power saving with most users reporting negligible visual impairment.

The intelligent systems unified architecture proposed for comprehensive modelling the subject domains specialists' activities in professional tasks solving. The human thinking processes and memory structures invariants adapted to given activity areas form foundations for such modelling. The structural and functional aspects of proposed architecture developed by integrating the entities of different models in mathematics, cybernetics, system engineering, linguistics and cognitive science. Such architecture components formalized specifications make a basis for creating the uniform descriptions of formalized cross-disciplinary intelligent systems models. They allow further transforming into intelligent systems' applied prototypes with unified common structural and functional properties. These prototypes based on the principles of knowledge engineering and able to accumulate specialist's experience in keeping and processing the complex knowledge structures. The developed models allow consider the thinking processes invariants as a basis for technology of designing the intelligent systems at specialists' activity areas. The proposed intelligent systems developed as results of adaptation the thinking processes' and memory structures' universal invariants. They allow performing complete simulation the subject specialists' professional activity. Mathematical basis for described intelligent systems' models originates from abstract concept of knowledge representation formalism. These formalisms' invariants, used as basic for formal specifications of nonmathematical concepts, essential for representation the human memory structures and thinking processes. intelligent systems' universal components form uniform structure. The last one based on knowledge dimension concept and realized by knowledge flows that cross separate dimensions and performed within such a structure.
