The Classroom Response System (CRS) is a useful tool for enhancing interactivity between teachers and students in the classroom. Through its use of smart devices and PCs, CRS is expected to effective at aiding both classroom interaction and learning. However, these devices can be used for more than CRS;they may also serve as entertainment tools. This study investigates the behavior of students who use CRS on such devices. Specifically, it analyzes log data of student behavior, focusing on student responses and their behavior of switching application programs on CRS. The results of analysis show a trend that students who immediately switch applications after answering a question on CRS have a low correct answer rate.

This paper is concerned with a new type of real-time feedback system in a classroom based on the text data collected from the audience. After reviewing two traditional approaches to real-time feedback;the Clicker Approach and the Forum Approach, it will be suggested that either of them is insufficient as a tool to motivate the learners in a case of presentation course. Instead, we propose two systems on the basis of text-mining technique to compensate for these insuffiencies. The first is a "Keyword and Frequency" system and the other is "Mind-mapping" system. In this paper, we describe the details of the systems. By being presented the keywords and data on frequency, the presenters can easily understand about the general feedback tendencies. In addition, the mind-map picture gives the presenters the opportunities of promoting a new awareness, various kinds of discoveries, and a deeper reflection about their works. Totally, our system can be incorporated into learning Management System (LMS), and it has a large potential for further use in a distant learning environment to capture an overall reaction from the audience all over the world.

As problem-based learning (PBL) is becoming more and more popular, there is also a growing interest in developing and using technologies in the implementation of PBL. However, teachers may have difficulties to design a pedagogically high-quality and technically executable, online or blended PBL process on their own, because they lack appropriate expertise in learning theories and design methods as well as a deeper understanding of the potential affordances of technologies. From this premise, we are committed to developing and testing methods and tools to support the design and delivery of online or hybrid PBL processes with high flexibility and a low threshold of usage requirements. As a first milestone towards this goal we have developed a web-based PBL authoring tool for facilitating teachers to design, represent, understand, communicate, customize and reuse online or blended PBL processes. This paper presents a technical approach to the PBL authoring tool and focuses on supporting the representation and management of PBL scripts, computational descriptions of PBL process. In comparison with other tools and technical approaches, it is concluded that a combined use of semi-structured data management and a unified data format appears to be a promising approach to effectively and efficiently support the representation and management of PBL scripts.

It is essential for educators to identify the student's reading ability when learning debugging strategies. Forty-five senior high school students (average 17.6 years old, SD=0.35) participated in this study. The participants were divided into three groups to examine the effect of three teaching materials including 1) normal reasoning, 2) a debugging process model, and 3) a debugging process model and three debugging strategies, namely, forward strategy, backward strategy, and CLOCK-based strategy. While the participants debugging a digital circuit question, the eye tracker recorded the eye movement data for analysis. The results indicated that participants receiving a debugging process model and three debugging strategies improved their debugging skills significantly by: 1) increased percentage of the participants finding bugs correctly, 2) increased percentage of the participants using debugging strategies correctly, and 3) reduced time spent on debugging in average. The findings may help educators and researchers understand the benefit of debugging strategies on digital circuits to design better teaching materials, methods, and learning strategies.

As human-centered interactive technologies, serious games are getting popularity in a variety of fields such as training simulations, health, national defense, and education. To build the best learning experience when designing a serious game, a system requires the integration of accurate spatio-temporal information. Also, there is an increasing need for intelligent medical technologies, which enable patients to live independently at home. This paper introduces a novel e-Health framework that leverages GIS-based serious games for people with disabilities. This framework consists of a spatial map-browsing environment augmented with our newly introduced multi-sensory Natural User Interface. We propose a comprehensive architecture that includes a sensory data manager, a storage layer, an information processing and computational intelligence layer, and a user interface layer. Detailed mathematical modeling as well as mapping methodology to convert difierent therapy-based hand-gestures into navigational movements within the serious game environment are also presented. Moreover, an intelligent Game Recommender has been developed for generating optimized navigational routes based on therapeutic gestures. Motion data is stored in a repository throughout the difierent sessions for ofline replaying and advanced analysis;and difierent indicators are displayed in a live manner. This framework has been tested with Nokia, Google maps, ESRI map, and other maps whereby a subject can visualize and browse the 2D and 3D map of the world through therapy-based gestures. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first GIS-based game recommender framework for online physical therapy. The prototype has been deployed to a disability center. The obtained results and feedback from therapists and patients are very encouraging. Copyright © 2014 ACM.

The application of educational data mining (EDM) techniques to interactive learning software is increasingly being used to broaden the range of constructs typically incorporated in student models, moving from traditional assessment of student knowledge to the assessment of engagement, affect, strategy, and metacognition. Researchers are also broadening the range of environments within which these constructs are assessed. In this study, we develop sensor-free affect detection for EcoMUVE, an immersive multi-user virtual environment that teaches middle-school students about casualty in ecosystems. In this study, models were constructed for five different educationally-relevant affective states (boredom, confusion, delight, engaged concentration, and frustration). Such models allow us to examine the behaviors most closely associated with particular affective states, paving the way for the design of adaptive personalization to improve engagement and learning.

Motivation: Alternative splicing (AS) is a regulated process that directs the generation of different transcripts from single genes. A computational model that can accurately predict splicing patterns based on genomic features and cellular context is highly desirable, both in understanding this widespread phenomenon, and in exploring the effects of genetic variations on AS. Methods: Using a deep neural network, we developed a model inferred from mouse RNA-Seq data that can predict splicing patterns in individual tissues and differences in splicing patterns across tissues. Our architecture uses hidden variables that jointly represent features in genomic sequences and tissue types when making predictions. A graphics processing unit was used to greatly reduce the training time of our models with millions of parameters. Results: We show that the deep architecture surpasses the performance of the previous Bayesian method for predicting AS patterns. With the proper optimization procedure and selection of hyperparameters, we demonstrate that deep architectures can be beneficial, even with a moderately sparse dataset. An analysis of what the model has learned in terms of the genomic features is presented.

In this paper, we present an approach for predicting users' level of engagement from nonverbal cues within a game environment. We use a data corpus collected from 28 participants (152 minutes of video recording) playing the popular platform game Super Mario Bros. The richness of the corpus allows extraction of several visual and facial expression features that were utilised as indicators of players' affects as captured by players' self-reports. Neuroevolution preference learning is used to construct accurate models of player experience that approximate the relationship between extracted features and reported engagement. The method is supported by a feature selection technique for choosing the relevant subset of features. Different setup settings were implemented to analyse the impact of the type of the features and the position of the extraction window on the modelling accuracy. The results obtained show that highly accurate models can be constructed (with accuracies up to 96.82%) and that players' nonverbal behaviour towards the end of the game is the most correlated with engagement. The framework presented is part of a bigger picture where the generated models are utilised to tailor content generation to a player's particular needs and playing characteristics.

In this paper, we present a question-answering (QA) system as a virtual tutor for students in the 5th and 6th grades. Students ask questions and the QA system gives answers to their questions based on a knowledge base. Teaching materials for history and geography are considered as a knowledge source. Because question log is not available in developing QA systems, multiple choice questions (MCQs) in the learning and testing materials are regarded as a training corpus to learn question types, answer types and keywords for retrieval, where an MCQ consists of a stem and a set of options. Options from the same MCQ are grouped into a cluster. Clusters with common elements are merged into a larger cluster. A cluster is labelled with a nominal element selected from the corresponding stems. We also mine question patterns from the stems for question type analysis in the QA system. Because the questions created by instructors in MCQs and the questions asked by students may be different, we develop a procedure to collect possible questions from students in the 6th grade. In the experiments, we first evaluate the question type classification systems using the MCQ corpus and the student corpus with 5-fold cross validation, respectively. Then we train question type classifiers with the complete MCQ corpus, and test them on the student corpus. The student's and the instructor's questions are compared and analyzed.
