Swift changes in the regulations and the organization of the transport sector make innovation an absolute necessity. A company's ability to cope with these changes depends largely on the learning capacity of the organization. Therefore in the transport case described in this paper the company decided that reengineering of the learning strategy was needed to handle the needs of their mobile workforce also in the long term. The strategy is based on a multi dimensional design using sound educational concepts and recent insights in the changing knowledge landscape in combination with learning 2.0 elements to handle the ever changing learning demands. The multi faceted solution is an integrated cross functional business portal with information, learning and performance improvement as the essential processes in the design. The portal is online and acceptance is clearly growing. Process monitoring and evaluation supply data on the usage and success of this integrated approach.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction mode most effective for weak learners, who lack fundamental knowledge and often had difficulty in comprehension of the learning subject, in learning with animation. Participants were twenty-seven undergraduate students enrolled in an Introductory data Structures course. They were randomly assigned into one of the three treatments: pure-reasoning, predicting-orientation, or reasoning-predicting-combination interaction. They interacted with two animations. They then received a learning experience survey and a learning transfer test immediately after interacting with each animation which demonstrated an example of AVL-tree insertion algorithm and data structure. Our findings indicate that the 'reasoning-predicting-combination' interaction led to the greatest transfer performance and was rated by students as the most useful interaction for understanding the animation content. The findings recommend that for weak learners, interaction for reasoning was effective to develop near-transfer ability at the initial learning phase, whereas when learners' knowledge grew to be capable of near-transfer task, the predicting-orientation interaction became helpful to gain far-transfer knowledge.

This paper describes a methodology based on multi-agent theory for Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) problem. We modeling a function that take account the impact of traffic managers actions, such as, fairness in the distribution of delays, and financial cost. This model is integrated with a Decision Support System Applied to Tactical Air Traffic Flow Management (SISCONFLUX). The architecture was implemented based on multi-agent system using reinforcement learning. The objective is to ensure the safety and prevent or reduce congestions in diverse sectors within the airspace compute the financial cost and impact of the delay generated on the aircraft. Experimental results using real data from Brasília's Flight Information Region (FIRBS) show that the delay time is 25% less than the results computed only with Graph Theory and fairness factor and financial cost can be used together with congestion data, without affecting safety and traffic flow.

A tool for discovery of gait anomalies of elderly from motion sensor data is proposed. The gait of the user is captured with the motion capture system, which consists of tags attached to the body and sensors situated in the apartment. Position of the tags is acquired by the sensors and the resulting time series of position coordinates are analyzed with dynamic time warping and machine learning algorithms in order to identify the specific gait anomaly. We designed medically oriented features for training a machine learning classifier that classifies the user's gait into: i) normal, ii) with hemiplegia, iii) with Parkinson's disease, iv) with pain in the back and v) with pain in the leg. Experimental results show that the proposed tool is usable for discovery of gait anomalies.

We have developed, used and evaluated Spelling Bug, a computer program designed for teachers and students in primary school classrooms, in three schools in Brisbane over 1.5 years. We evaluated how learner-adaptive computer programs can be successfully integrated in primary classrooms in situ, using observations, interviews and computer-based data logs. The study found participating teachers felt time poor and they did not priorities learning to use new technologies. However, if they find add-on value they use the technology to complement traditional teaching. The response to using Spelling Bug was positive from both teachers and students. Students enjoyed a new task for working with spelling and they responded positively to the individual challenge the computer program set up for them. Teachers were pleased to find their students working independently and found time to support individual needs in the classroom. Retrieving information from a computer program gave support for teachers when making decisions on how to proceed with their teaching and presenting to parents. Copyright the author(s) and CHISIG.

Interactive Digital TV has arisen new forms of interaction not traditionally associated with this medium. One of its applications is the so-called “t-learning” or TV-based interactive learning. To date, most existing t-learning applications confine themselves to edutainment more than to more complex and pedagogical forms of learning, due to the technological constraints imposed by set-top boxes. This paper overcomes those technological barriers to propose the first t-learning affective aware tutoring tool. The tool allows to capture by means of a camera the facial expressions of the student while performing evaluations (tests) through a broadcasted interactive t-learning application at home. It integrates a novel Artificial Intelligence method for facial affect recognition, where facial expressions are evaluated with a psychological 2-dimensional continuous affective approach. Thanks to it, the t-learning tool is able to automatically extract emotional information from the learner, which is further presented in a simple and efficient way to the distance tutor so that he can be aware of student's encountered difficulties and emotional progression during the learning process.

Software traceability is a fundamentally important task in software engineering. The need for automated traceability increases as projects become more complex and as the number of artifacts increases. We propose an automated technique that combines traceability with a machine learning technique known as topic modeling. Our approach automatically records traceability links during the software development process and learns a probabilistic topic model over artifacts. The learned model allows for the semantic categorization of artifacts and the topical visualization of the software system. To test our approach, we have implemented several tools: an artifact search tool combining keyword-based search and topic modeling, a recording tool that performs prospective traceability, and a visualization tool that allows one to navigate the software architecture and view semantic topics associated with relevant artifacts and architectural components. We apply our approach to several data sets and discuss how topic modeling enhances software traceability, and vice versa.

This paper presents the results from a neural network rule extraction algorithm applied to the LED display recognition problem. We show that pruned neural networks with small number of hidden nodes and connections are able to recognize all the 10 digits from 0 to 9. Earlier work by other researchers demonstrated how symbolic fuzzy rules can be extracted from trained neural networks to solve this problem. Our rules in contrast are crisp rules, and they are obtained from smaller networks. As a result, simpler and easier to understand rules are obtained. These rules give us an insight of how neural networks differentiate one digit from the rest in LED display recognition problem.

The data mining and machine learning community is often faced with two key problems: working with imbalanced data and selecting the best features for machine learning. This paper presents a process involving a feature selection technique for selecting the important attributes and a data sampling technique for addressing class imbalance. The application domain of this study is software engineering, more specifically, software quality prediction using classification models. When using feature selection and data sampling together, different scenarios should be considered. The four possible scenarios are: (1) feature selection based on original data, and modeling (defect prediction) based on original data; (2) feature selection based on original data, and modeling based on sampled data; (3) feature selection based on sampled data, and modeling based on original data; and (4) feature selection based on sampled data, and modeling based on sampled data. The research objective is to compare the software defect prediction performances of models based on the four scenarios. The case study consists of nine software measurement data sets obtained from the PROMISE software project repository. Empirical results suggest that feature selection based on sampled data performs significantly better than feature selection based on original data, and that defect prediction models perform similarly regardless of whether the training data was formed using sampled or original data.

Mode-directed tabling amounts to using table modes to control what arguments are used in variant checking of subgoals and how answers are tabled. A mode can be min, max, + (input), (output), or nt (non-tabled). While the traditional table-all approach to tabling is good for finding all answers, mode-directed tabling is well suited to dynamic programming problems that require selective answers. In this paper, we present three application examples of mode-directed tabling, namely, (1) hydraulic system planning, a dynamic programming problem, (2) the Viterbi algorithm in PRISM, a probabilistic logic reasoning and learning system, and (3) constraint checking in evaluating Answer Set Programs (ASP). For the Viterbi application, the feature of enabling a cardinality limit in a table mode declaration plays an important role. For a PRISM program and a set of data, the explanations may be too large to be completely stored and the cardinality limit allows for Viterbi inference based on a subset of explanations. The mode nt, which specifies an argument that can participate in the computation of a tabled predicate but is never tabled either in subgoal or answer tabling, is useful in constraint checking for the Hamilton cycle problem encoded as an ASP. These examples demonstrate the usefulness of mode-directed tabling.
