The Internet Search Service (ISS) was proposed to support an uniform interface for searching on the World Wide Web. Based on this service, a multi-search engine named Octopus had been built. In order to provide more services, such as personal functionality, we provide personalized search for users. In this paper, the policies of personalized search are described. In addition, in order to keep the advantages of the ISS, a personal information-filtering agent is added into the Octopus instead of modifying the architecture or interface of ISS. The feedback mechanism is in cooperation with the filtering mechanism to achieve the functionality of personalized search in a search engine. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Recently, a huge quantity of HTML documents have been created in Internet, which really constitute a treasury of information. HTML, however, is designed mainly for reading with browsers, and not suitable for machine processing, whereas XML was proposed as a solution for this problem. In this paper, we give a case-based transformation method from HTML documents to XML ones. There are many series of HTML pages in actual Web sites, and each page of a series usually has a quite similar structure with each other. Therefore a case-based transformation must be a promising method in practice for a semi-automatic transformation from HTML to XML. Throughout experimental evaluations, we show this case-based method achieved a highly accurate transformation, i.e., 85% of actual 80 pages can be transformed in a correct way, with this case-based method. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

We tried to develop a patient monitoring system using fuzzy information. According to a trend from a client-server system to a Web-based system, this fuzzy patient monitoring system was advanced by adding a Web-based monitoring system which was offered with real-time per about 10 seconds. This system is operated in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 because of a FTP ActiveX control which transfers the updated-file of a patient monitoring information and alarms by pre-setting values on a server. This system offers not only the real-time monitoring information but also the references of a patient's ECG waveform and a past recorded data.

This paper presents a method for combining several different estimates of the mammographic skin-air interface in order to eliminate noise inherent to each individual segmentation algorithm. Given that each algorithm provides a binary mask of the breast, the first step is to isolate pixels adjacent to the skin-air interface. A final estimate of the skin-air interface for each point results from the combination of skin-air interface location data from each procedure. data for each point is grouped as a set, upon which statistical operators, such as the elimination of outliers, are applied. Since the skin-air interface is a continuous line, data from prior points is also used as an estimate of points that follow. Results are evaluated in terms of success with the combination of two skin-air interface segmentation algorithms. The resulting 'hybrid' technique overcomes several problems that beset each individual algorithm.

Delivering drugs for muscle relaxation is known to be a delicate process, which is highly nonlinear in nature. On of the most commonly-used drugs to create neuromuscular blockade is atricurium. Here, the authors develop a dynamic neural network to model neuromuscular blockade system when atricurium is used for paralysis. The minimum-complexity neural modeling algorithm used here is based on the PAC learning theory and is shown to perform similarly on the testing and training data. The resulting model is proved to be stochastically stable and can be used as a reliable and accurate model of neuromuscular blockade system.

intelligent tutoring systems (ITTSs) are a class of computer systems allowing human teacher emulation in the process of learning and teaching. From the user's standpoint most of an ITS can be considered as a user interface, since it brings ITS functionality to mostly non-technical users. This is the main reason why in designing an ITS human-computer interaction becomes one of the most important issues. In the paper an intelligent authoring shell, which is an ITS generator, is described and its user interface aspects discussed. This authoring shell, which is named Tutor-Expert System (TEx-Sys), is parameterized with domain knowledge and used in teaching at the university and secondary school level.

This study compares the effectiveness of Bayesian networks versus Decision Trees in modeling the Integral Theory of Female Urinary Incontinence diagnostic algorithm. Bayesian networks and Decision Trees were developed and trained using data from 58 adult women presenting with urinary incontinence symptoms. A Bayesian Network was developed in collaboration with an expert specialist who regularly utilizes a non-automated diagnostic algorithm in clinical practice. The original Bayesian network was later refined using a more connected approach. Diagnoses determined from all automated approaches were compared with the diagnoses of a single human expert. In most cases, Bayesian networks were found to be at least as accurate as the Decision Tree approach. The refined Connected Bayesian Network was found to be more accurate than the Original Bayesian Network. This is likely due to the more generalized nature of the Connected Network. The Original Bayesian Network accurately discriminated between diagnoses despite the small sample size. In contrast, the Connected and Decision Tree approaches were less able to discriminate between diagnoses. The Original Bayesian Network was found to provide an excellent basis for graphically communicating the correlation between symptoms and laxity defects in a given anatomical zone. Performance measures in both networks indicate that Bayesian networks could provide a potentially useful tool in the management of female pelvic floor dysfunction. Before the technique can be utilized in practice, well-established learning algorithms should be applied to improve network structure. A larger training data set should also improve network accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease affecting a large segment of world's population. This article proposes the prototype design of a Tutoring System (TS) developed to support the educational needs related to DM treatment. The objective is to guide Type 1 patients and their families in the better routines and cautions they should follow, to improve their life quality. As the TS design is the first step of the project of an intelligent Tutoring System design, the entire project is presented but the first step, the TS design and the pedagogical issues are described more in detail in this article.

Neural networks were trained using the ALOPEX technique to predict the outcome of pallidotomy, an operation performed to alleviate Parkinson's disease. Because of the limited number of operations performed, the training procedure relied heavily on simulation data. The assumptions from which the simulation data were derived were reflected in the performance of the resultant networks; the networks nonetheless retained the flexibility to respond appropriately to unusual inputs.

The great popularity of the Internet and the widespread use of the World Wide Web are promoting a new methodology for distance learning. This methodology takes advantage of several different Internet services and applications mostly for the student support (as a mean of exchanging information with the professor) and to promote collaborative learning regardless of the time and distance among the students. This paper describes the introduction of Internet tools (such as WWW, e-mail, IRC, FTP, mailing list) in the distance learning postgraduate program of the "Magister de Redes" (http://***/master) of the National University of La Plata. The ongoing experience was successful due to certain facts that are stated in the paper which also mentions some drawbacks and the strategy for overcoming them. The curricula of this postgraduate program was proposed, in 1995, to upgrade the knowledge of IT professionals both from the engineering and the computer science field in the networking area.
