Many civil and mechanical systems are in continuous use despite aging and associated potential risk for damage accumulation. Hence, the ability to monitor the structural health of these systems on a real-time basis is becoming very important. This paper describes a practical real-time structural health monitoring system using soft computing tools and its application to the structural health monitoring of a steel bridge located in Missouri. Vibration data collected from this bridge was processed and fed to the fuzzy logic decision system. The fuzzy logic decision system makes use of fuzzy clustering to determine the possible presence of damage in the bridge. A neural network prediction system which makes use of backpropagation algorithm predicts the amount of actual damage in the members which were predicted damaged by the fuzzy logic.

We describe in this paper the application of type-2 fuzzy logic to the problem of automated quality control in sound speaker manufacturing. Traditional quality control has been done by manually checking the quality of sound after production. This manual checking of the speakers is time consuming and occasionally was the cause of error in quality evaluation. For this reason, we developed an intelligent system for automated quality control in sound speaker manufacturing. The intelligent system has a type-2 fuzzy rule base containing the knowledge of human experts in quality control. The parameters of the fuzzy system are tuned by applying neural networks using, as training data, a real time series of measured sounds as given by good sound speakers. We also use the fractal dimension as a measure of the complexity of the sound signal.

This paper addresses several parameterized models for combination of FDCF and FCCF, Fuzzy Conjunctive Canonical Form and Fuzzy Disjunctive Canonical Form. Then the optimal parameters are gained through an optimization method to assign the best membership functions for the variables of the system domain. The proposed expert system is implemented for feasibility study of the army projects. This system uses Schweizer and Sklar parametric operators for t-norm and s-norm and Yager parametric defuzzification method Moreover, for inference mechanism, FATI and FITA are combined with a linear parameter. The presented expert system shows its superiority in comparison with type I fuzzy set in flexibility, and robustness.

Large pharmaceutical trials are now underway to assess the effectiveness of cholinesterase drugs in slowing the cognitive decline in vascular dementia. Current trials use probability based statistics in which mean values of cognitive measures are compared between treatment and placebo groups. Several limitations exist in traditional drug study designs that impact patient selection criteria, preclude identification of potentially high efficacy subpopulations, and constrain the applicability of study results in treating the individual. We propose that fuzzy logic based mathematical methods can augment conventional methods of data analysis in pharmaceutical trials to overcome existing limitations and provide more effective treatment algorithms in drug therapy. To illustrate this possibility, we intend to analyze data from a group of patients with vascular dementia given cholinesterase drug therapy using both fuzzy and probability based methods.

The new approach combines the outputs of two traditional fuzzy systems to obtain the final conclusion of the intuitionistic fuzzy system. The new method provides an efficient way of calculating the output of an intuitionistic fuzzy system, and as consequence can be applied to real-world problems in many areas of application. We illustrate the new approach with a simple example to motivate the ideas behind this work We also illustrate the new approach for fuzzy inference with a more complicated example of monitoring a non-linear dynamic plant.

In this paper is proposed a fuzzy control system for optimizing the transmission power in cellular phones. As the mobil station moves toward the edge of a cell, the cell's base station notes that the signal strength is diminishing. Meanwhile, the base station in the cell the mobil station is moving toward (which is listening and measuring signal strength on all frequencies, not just its own one) sees the phone's signal strength increasing. The two base stations coordinate with each other, and at some point, the phone gets a signal on a control channel telling it to change frequencies. This hand off switches the phone to a different cell, which receives the signal with a bigger intensity, so the next decrement of the transmission power will be the lower possible without risking the quality of the transmission. Nowadays the central cellular controls the transmission power on the mobil station, on intervals of 4 dbs to increase or decrease it, so the final power always is above or under the required power.

Cooperative learning in multi-agent systems is generally expected to improve both quality and speed of learning. This is particularly true when agents are able to recognize expert agents amongst themselves and integrate their knowledge properly. Additionally, the process of learning can be improved when the reinforcement learning signals in each agent can balance between searching behavior of the unknown knowledge (exploration) and learning behavior of the obtained knowledge (exploitation). In this paper, a fuzzy dynamic cooperative learning method, based on weighted strategy sharing (WSS), is introduced which draws a balance between exploitation and exploration behaviors. In the weighed strategy sharing method, agents share their learned knowledge by a measure of their expertness. The strategy, when applied to the classic herding problem, shows further improvement in quality and speed of learning when parameters of the learning algorithm are dynamically determined by a fuzzy routine.
