This paper describes how fuzzy logic can be applied to robotic control using software tools on personal computers. First, the fundamentals of fuzzy logic and robotics are discussed. Second, fuzzy controller designs for a two-link manipulator and for robot PUMA 560 (the last three links locked) are proposed. C language code is developed to simulate the controller designs. Fuzzy Inference Development Environment (FIDE) software from Aptronix, Inc. is used for development of fuzzy if-then rules. The contribution of this paper is the exploration of nonconventional methods for control of highly nonlinear systems.

On the basis of discussing extended Allen-Givone implementation oriented algebra, this paper selects a suitable data structure, presents the definition of generalized OR-combined operation of multi-valued logic (MVL) and uses it for solving an EPI set rapidly. In order to speed up the process for solving a cover, the grouping subsume simplification of two-valued sharp product is extended onto position cubical arrays of MVL. By the /spl Delta/ operator, the implementation cost is further lowered after forming a cover. The algorithm is an extension of the two-valued cover-most algorithm proposed by M.C. Waters.

A fuzzy logic power system stabiliser has been developed using speed and active power deviations as the controller input variables. The inference mechanism of the fuzzy logic controller is represented by a 7/spl times/7 decision table, i.e. 49 if-then rules. In order to use it under a wide range of operating conditions, its parameters have been tuned using a neural network. The tuned stabiliser has been tested by performing nonlinear simulations using a synchronous machine-infinite bus model. It is shown that the neuro-fuzzy stabiliser is superior to a fixed parameter fuzzy logic power system stabiliser.

This paper presents a novel intelligent control scheme. It is a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) in combination with a neural network controller (NNC) based on a microcomputer. The combined controller is named a neural fuzzy controller (NFC). With the help of FLC inference, NNC can accelerate its self-learning process. Therefore the NFC, with the proposed scheme gains an excellent control reasoning and adaption. This has been proved effective both by simulations and a practical application in a servo system.

A phase-locked loop induction servomotor variable speed drive incorporating a fuzzy logic controller is presented for the precise speed control of induction motors. The proposed system combines the excellent speed regulation of the phase-locked loop techniques and the advantages of fuzzy logic controllers. A system is implemented to verify the performance of the proposed system. The experimental results show that the combination of a fuzzy logic controller and the phase-locked loop in induction servomotor variable speed drives can achieve precise speed control with fast response.

In order to reduce the approximation errors between the true nonlinear functions and fuzzy approximators, a robust adaptive law is also proposed. In this paper new generalized operators, based on a fuzzy entropy approach are presented. After a general discussion on fuzzy entropy the concept of elementary certainty function of a fuzzy set is introduced. Using this mapping, the generalized intersections and unions are defined as mappings, that assign the less and the more certain membership grade to each of the elements of the domain of the operators, respectively. It is shown that these operators satisfy the axiom system of generalized operations and can be constructed from the conventional min and max operations. The second part of the paper investigates the applicability of the new operators in fuzzy logic controllers. Simulations have been carried out so as to determine the effects of the operators on the performance of the fuzzy controllers.

The paper presents a methodology in applying genetic search techniques to automatically select a proper triangular membership function for fuzzy logic based PI controllers. The approach produces a novel type of fuzzy-PI controllers with guaranteed stability property and the desired performance specified by the more general performance criterion. The control approach is suitable for linear systems as well as a class of nonlinear unstable plant studied by Tseng et al. Numerical simulation results show that the better membership functions can be obtained and the resultant hierarchical fuzzy-PI controller outperforms the fix-valued PI controller.
