The goal of this research is to find an algorithm that is capable of recognizing gestures drawn in a visual and gesture-driven interface used to teach introductory programming concepts. Our system combines components from Google's Blockly, a visual programming language with a drag-and-drop puzzle piece interface, and Microsoft's Xbox Kinect which is used to perform skeletal tracking. We focus on two supervised machine learning clustering algorithms, centroid matching and medoid matching, to detect gestures.

In a distributed energy system, the optimal scheduling of the use of energy resources is important to reduce cost and can become critical to meeting the energy needs in an isolated system. This paper presents a general framework that allows to formulate the energy management problem in a linear programming framework with inequality constraints. In order to solve the problem thus formulated, the classical simplex or mixed-integer linear programming algorithms have been replaced with two interior point methods, which are of polynomial-time complexity.

This work addresses the use and compare of machine vision software for image recognition compared to commercially available systems in automation industry. The aim is to compare computational stability and time-cost efficiency of integration of available algorithms against commercially sold systems. Three types of environments are selected for comparison - code development environment, graphical development environment and industrial machine vision system solution. The evaluation is based on the use of all three systems for the same types of applications and a comparison of their results - processing time, stability, development time and total development cost. Comparison applications are presence/absence, counting, dimensional measurement, search and character recognition.

Robotic support arms (RSAs) have the potential to allow people with disabilities in both upper limbs and lower limbs greater independence, allowing them to perform the necessary physical activities every day. Disabled people usually use RSAs while sitting in an electric wheelchair (EW). This paper will present the Kinova Gen3 lite assistance robot's fuzzy control for people with personal needs mounted on an electric wheelchair. A controller based on fuzzy logic with the algorithm for formulating fuzzy rules on software and effective control for a 6-DOF robotic arm simulates the robotic arm's operation to perform the following two tasks: serving the user a glass of water and inserting a plug into the socket. The parameters that characterize the robotic arm will be used for the simulator to mimic the actual response. The fuzzy logic controller is applied to the robot arm and then executed on the entire robotic arm to control the desired tasks.

Teaching programming concepts and skills to beginners is a challenging and daunting task. As undergraduates, students struggle with understanding the fundamental concepts of programming and learning the syntaxes to build up a solution to an existing problem. The main challenges in delivering an introductory programming module are to get the students actively engaged within and outside the classroom and to increase the level of interest towards programming. Many researchers have tried out using different active learning tools and techniques to engage students in the learning process interactively. Even though lot of different techniques and tools have been introduced with time there is still a reluctancy among the learners and academics to move from the traditional teacher centric learning environment to a more interactive student centric environment. This research is focusing on how active learning integrated with pedagogical aspects can be used in an introductory programming module and the effectiveness of it when compared with a traditional approach.
