RFID technology has advanced a lot in recent years. In order for enterprises to be competitive, an increasing number have integrated the technology into their operations. Most RFID Middleware providers focus on how to shield the bottom device -level heterogeneity to accelerate the application and deployment of this technology. they always concentrate on collecting RFID events to generate standard application-level events and tend to neglect the complexity of enterprise business process, especially the optimization and rearrangement part of the business process during the RFID application deployment. As a result, these middle wares are difficult to integrate with the legacy systems. In this paper, we introduce an application-level architecture of RFID middleware. It is process-based and service & component oriented. the architecture focuses on the top-level application: the business integration of RFID system. the architecture combines using process engine with SCA (Service Component architecture) and OSGi standard component library. It facilitates system's maintenance by conforming to JMX (Java Management Extension). We restrict the architecture to conform to the loose-couple RFID mapping mechanisms that is based on rule engine so as to both integrate RFID technology into legacy system and obtain the flexibility as well. At the end part of this paper, we provide solutions for two scenarios of the logistics field using this architecture. ©2009 IEEE.

Despite of the success that programmable devices have enjoyed in the last two decades, architecture synthesis methodologies for Run-Time Reconfigurable (RTR) systems are still in their infancy. As the majority of consumer devices integrate multiple-functionality, the costeffectiveness becomes the main focus of computing systems design. this paper presents a novel architecture synthesis methodology for the cost-effective implementation of a multi-task and multi-mode workload. the proposed methodology creates a RTR system that changes its functionality in response to a dynamic environment and enables on-chip assembly of preconstructed components by synthesizing a workloadspecific static architecture. the proposed methodology presents novelties in design abstraction, partitioning method and in the procedure of deciding reconfiguration granularity. the experimental results show the cost benefits of the proposed architecture synthesis methodology saving 73% of area and 29.8% of power compared to fixed design approach for implementing multiple visual processors. © 2009 IEEE.

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is positioned at the confluence of the two most powerful currents of our time, information technology empowered by artificial intelligence and the ever-improving transportation technologies. this confluence is ushering in an era of transportation services that are inclusive, safer, greener, and more efficient at the same time. Like any other big change, this is strongly disruptive as it upends the concept of ownership and availability while challenging authorities all over the world to reimagine logistics, people movement, and environment protection. this paper examines the ITS through its components, architecture, and related applications. It dives deeper into the hood to examine how these components are, both individually and collectively, taking us towards the connected future and smart cities. Finally, it attempts to put a perspective by evaluating the challenges and opportunities inherent in the deployment and propagation of the ITS. © 2020 IEEE.

the incorporation of contextual elements of location, time, and identity into traditional computer and network systems and services is resulting in enhanced, intuitive, more natural user experiences. this work defines an instance of a presence-based messaging system called Pebbles and Urns. A survey of current messaging systems has indicated key missing elements that are addressed by functionality in the Pebbles and Urns architecture. Current context-based messaging research focuses on the social activities and social interactions of the user. While that is important, this work proposes how Pebbles and Urns would augment the numerous ways a person deploys, obtains, and realizes information in their daily activities. Next, it considers agent design and tuplespaces as implementation components of Pebbles and Urns. An agent's ability to react to context, combined with tuplespace characteristics of distributed, associative memory, persistent storage, and destination - space time uncoupling allow the investigation of new messaging schemes offering interesting advantages over existing messaging systems. this work closes with several Pebbles and Urns user scenarios and suggested future work to extend the Pebbles and Urns messaging system.

Given the performance and efficiency optimizations realized by the computer systems and architecture community over the last decades, the dominating source of computing's carbon footprint is shifting from operational emissions to embodied emissions. these embodied emissions owe to hardware manufacturing and infrastructure-related activities. Despite the rising embodied emissions, there is a distinct lack of architectural modeling tools to quantify and optimize the end-to-end carbon footprint of computing. this work proposes ACT, an architectural carbon footprint modeling framework, to enable carbon characterization and sustainability-driven early design space exploration. Using ACT we demonstrate optimizing hardware for carbon yields distinct solutions compared to optimizing for performance and efficiency. We construct use cases, based on the three tenets of sustainable design-Reduce, Reuse, Recycle-to highlight future methods that enable strong performance and efficiency scaling in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Recently, the notion of context aware computing has attracted attention in various domains, and was mentioned as emerging direction in Gartner's 2009 hype cycle for enterprise architecture. the paper provides a brief report of a tutorial given in DEBS 2010 that discusses the notion of context, generally in computing, in event processing modeling, giving examples from the current state-of-the-practice that supports some types of context, but still do not view it as a first class citizen in the model. © 2010 ACM.

Cloud computing has been the most prevalent technology in the past few years and many prominent enterprises have prompted their cloud systems, preparing for the coming age of cloud computing. We can predict that the mobile area will take on a boom with the advent of this new concept. While due to the inherent characteristics of mobile environment, challenges like mobility, heterogeneity and low band-width will hinder the advancement of this incorporation. In this paper we will introduce a new concept and an abstraction derived from mobile agent-Universal Mobile Service Cell to shield the unequivalence of heterogeneous distributed systems between mobile devices and the cloud. then scheduling the cell plays a key role in the mobile cloud computing. Here we adopt the Genetic Algorithm to meet this challenge. this paper is aimed at proposing a whole solution from the architecture to the algorithm. ©2009 IEEE.

In the current drive towards dynamic self-managing systems, a particular challenge is the development of coherent architectures of context-aware middleware and components. the embedded class of systems brings the additional challenges of resource limitations and difficulty to upgrade deployed code. this paper describes a complete implementation of middleware and component architecture that facilitates flexible run-time configuration via embedding of dynamically replaceable decision logic into software components An automotive air conditioning system application is described illustrating the approach, using a variety of context sources. © 2009 IEEE.
