Since latest the presentation of the concept of Industry 4.0 digitalization is increasingly implemented in industry and especially in production industry. Along with this development the availability and handling of data in production enterprises have been improved and are still objective of further improvements. Additionally, data are the basis for implementing artificial intelligence and using its potentials for many purposes. One of these can be supporting employees completing their tasks. Both, digitalization, and artificial intelligence lead to changes in work design, work processes and organizational structures. Thus, they also have an impact on occupational safety and health and require identifying and assessing the consequences for the physical and mental health of employees. The risk assessment is an essential part of occupational safety and health. It has to be performed for instance in case that new machines or devices will be procured. Further questions in this context concern possibly arising fears of employees, having little experience with new technologies, or the fit of existing and required skills for new technologies. Structured by informational and energetic types of work as well as the design areas technology, organization, and personnel the opportunities of digitalization and artificial intelligence are described within this contribution. Equally, the impact on occupational safety and health is discussed. Finally, the implementation of digitalization and artificial intelligence is outlined and an outlook on future standardization activities is given.

The aim of this work is to develop a method for automated, fast and accurate geometric modeling of blood vessels from 3d images, robust to image limited resolution, noise and artefacts. Within the centerline-radius paradigm, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used to approximate the mapping from the image cross-sections to vessel lumen parameters. A six-parameter image formation model is utilized to derive conditions for this mapping to exist, and to generate images for the CNN training, validation and testing. The trained networks are applied to real-life time-of-flight (TOF) magnetic resonance images (MRI) of a blood-flow phantom. Excellent agreement is observed between the predictions made by the CNN and those obtained via model fitting as the reference method. The latter is a few orders of magnitude slower than the CNN and suffers from local minima problem. The CNN is also trained and tested on publicly available contrast-enhanced (CE) computed tomography angiography (CTA) clinical datasets. It accurately predicts the coronary-tree lumen parameters in seconds, compared to hours needed by human experts. The method can be an aid to vascular diagnosis and automated annotation of images. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Additive manufacturing offers several potentials such as the freedom of design, part consolidation, function integration, or time and cost-savings. These potentials make AM interesting for industries such as aerospace, automotive and medical implants, and are also seen as enables for the creation of entirely new business models. Additive manufacturing has the potential to change the current manufacturing landscape substantially and has attracted much attention of industry and academia over the last decades. However, these developments require improvements concerning the technology itself and its successful implementation into the value creation chain. driven by the promising market opportunities and upcoming technological developments, many research activities started. This paper presents a literature review of publications from the last 20 years. Based on this analysis, the evolution of the AM research landscape is portrayed. The research landscape is organised into four areas: machine and process, material, digital process chain and methodology. The paper summarises developments in each of these areas and concludes by presenting current and discussing future research topics. © ICEd *** right reserved.

In this paper, influence of dielectric overlay permittivity on miniaturized ESPAR antenna parameters is presented. ESPAR antenna is a low-cost and energy-efficient way to implement beam steering capability to a node and improve network performance. The antenna size reduction is obtained by embedding its active and passive elements in ABS based materials of relative permittivity equal to 4, 5.5 and 7.5 in order to achieve network node compact size. Simulation results of three optimized for particular dielectric constant designs are presented and tradeoff between dimensions reduction and performance is discussed. Selected materials and antenna design are dedicated to be fabricated in 3d print technology, so can be easily prototyped.

Structural health monitoring is an area of growing interest and is worthy of new and innovative approaches. Since the automatic diagnosis of structures is very complex and challenging, recent research to apply deep learning techniques has been actively conducted. In this study, we assumed that a PLA beam copied by 3d printing is the smallest unit constituting a complex structure and applied GRU to detect defects. To set the defect point of the beam, a total of four holes were drilled at regular intervals, and then a mass was attached. Signals at different locations were collected through a vibrator and trained through GRU, and the results were compared in terms of RMSE value. As a result of this experiment, we checked the defect by inputting test data into the trained model and were able to measure the defect degree of the PLA beam with a weighted average F1 score of 84%.

Silk is a unique example of heritage where memory, identity, creativity and knowledge can be found in just one piece. It is a multifaceted, living heritage, as it consists of more than the fabrics themselves, but also the techniques associated with them, historical buildings, trades, festivities, etc. Therefore, designers, weavers, painters, sellers and users are involved in it. However, it is also a fragile heritage, alive in the few industries that still weave with historical looms. Additionally, the COVId19 pandemic has put the entire artisanal and small industrial sector of European silk in risk of disappearing. In this, paper we show some results of the SILKNOW project, whose main objective is to improves the understanding, conservation, and dissemination of European silk heritage. To that aim, we provide a variety of interactive tools and computational technologies, which have been designed and developed in close collaboration among experts in ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities). We focus the paper in addressing the interdisciplinary work carried out in the project to produce two interactive tools: Virtual Loom and STMaps. Results show that this way of working has been essential to produce such outcomes.

Highly accurate localization technologies are a key enabler of future intelligent transport system applications including automated and cooperative driving as well as location based services. One major challenge is positioning in urban areas, where high buildings with reflecting surfaces lead to signal blockage, multipath effects and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) reception. As a countermeasure, deterministic NLOS modelling approaches using 3d map aided GNSS (3dMA-GNSS) have been developed and show promising results in mitigating those effects. However, most prior studies focused on advancing the method itself, while the implementational aspects of such a system regarding real-world applications remain unsolved. Major challenges lie within the generation and dissemination of suitable 3d maps as well as the computational cost of the classification of measurements into LOS resp. NLOS behaviour. The aim of this paper is to connect the parts of highly precise GNSS based urban localization, digital maps, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) based cooperative positioning and data dissemination. A map dissemination scheme for precomputed sky occupancy masks using V2X communication technology is evolved and discussed. Furthermore, the data rate requirements are compared with the capability of the existing IEEE802.11p (ITS-G5) V2X standard in terms of data rate and the range of the communication link.

The use of augmented reality is becoming more and more commonplace. Whether via smartphone apps, on television or while driving a car, almost everyone has already encountered this technology more or less knowingly. In this paper, we investigate to what extent Augmented Reality (AR) can be used profitably in public transport, especially on semi-transparent display screens. These semi-transparent and interactive public displays are built-in as windows in public transport vehicles. In our research project SmartMMI these mobile public displays are called "SmartWindows". We implemented an iterative evaluation concept containing of four phases to assess different types of AR content to be displayed on such a SmartWindow as well as the special interest of individual types of users. Based on the results of two conducted online studies, specific user scenarios were created and evaluated in a lab-based user study. Finally, we designed an online survey to determine which AR concepts are most accepted by users. In this video-based survey, we evaluated the running speed of AR object inserts, the colors, the fade in's and the types of information displayed on a semi-transparent display. In this paper, we introduce all four stages of our iterative evaluation process, and focus further on study methodology, set-up and the results of the video-based online survey.

In the area of dementia care, Serious Games are seen as an opportunity to boost cognitive capabilities and to stabilize the ability to independently perform Activities of daily Living (AdLs). We developed a Serious Game based on the popular boardgame chess to target the elderly and dementia patients through incorporating dementia relevant requirements. We analyzed multiple chess variants, which use a smaller board size with less pieces to reduce the game complexity. This results in a new chess version, that helps players to understand the core mechanics of the game and allows them to get into the flow of playing with chess figures. Included are different training scenarios as well as a virtual opponent, that adjusts towards the cognitive skill level of a dementia patient. The game’s visual appearance can be tailored to any person and preference by e.g. adjusting the board color theme to address color blindness or changing between 2d and 3d modes. Another core aspect of our game concept focuses on custom 3d printed chess pieces. They are made from conductive material and have a unique finish with additional accessories to distinguish individual pieces from each other. This results in a natural, tangible playing experience on a touchscreen device, a so-called Tangible User Interface. Besides connecting to the feeling of playing real chess, such an approach has the potential to reduce the fear towards modern devices, a well-known entry barrier for this target group. In a retirement home a small pilot study with dementia patients is performed. Furthermore, by utilizing a user-centered approach, we can identify additional insights into the concept of a supported boardgame with tangible game figures which can overcome fear towards modern technology. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
