The Visual Snow Syndrome is a neurological condition that causes flickering dots to appear across a person's entire field of vision. Those who suffer from this syndrome report seeing an unending stream of flickering dots throughout their visual field. Although patients often experience concurrent migraines, Visual Snow Syndrome appears to be a distinct phenomenon from prolonged migraine aura. The cause of this syndrome is not yet fully understood, but it has been linked to various eye and brain dysfunctions. The aim of this work is to make improvements to the environment in which exercises affected by this condition are developed. Currently, the Visual Snow Initiative provides an online platform where it is possible to carry out a 30-day exercise cycle during which patients are shown videos with noise that simulates Visual Snow and only affects certain areas of the visual field. This video noise moves and shifts along the screen occupying different areas of the screen. The video stream is sent from the servers to the users and requires a modern and efficient internet connection. A single video file occupies about 2GB of disk space. Modern codecs that deal with compressing video and encoding it into browser-supported formats have great difficulty encoding a stream where the pixel matrix of the video is in constant motion. The purpose of this work is to reconstruct the noise that is displayed within the video files for the exercises by means of JavaScript algorithms in such a way as to reduce the download required from users to a few kilobytes and to generate client-side the video that will then be used for the exercise.

As one of the precious intangible cultural heritages, traditional Chinese paper cutting has a long history and profound cultural connotation. In the digital age, traditional paper cutting is gradually moving towards digital paper cutting in order for better inherit and development. In the research of paper cutting digitalization, computer has been normally adopted to make two-dimensional paper cutting, to focus on the restoration of paper cutting process. There is still a little difficult for users who are not familiar with paper cutting;three-dimensional model has also been used to improve the picture effect, but it is not easy to show the characteristics of paper cutting with three-dimensional models. In order to address such an issue, this paper innovates the artistic style of digital paper cutting by combining paper cutting with common visual effects in modern 2d games, improves the efficiency of scene construction by writing automatic generation algorithms, and perfects the interactive mode of digital paper cutting by introducing natural interaction. In this way, users can participate in the process of creating paper cutting works, and creation of paper cutting works becomes simple and efficient benefiting from the automatic generation algorithm and natural interaction. Finally, by comparing to works of other paper cutting style, the works achieved by the solution proposed in this paper illustrates the advantages of digitalization in three aspects: artistic style, fast generation, and natural interaction.

The article presents the results of work on improving sentiment and emotion recognition for Polish texts using a big data-based expansion process and larger neural language models. The proposed recognition method is intended to serve in a therapeutic dialogue system to analyze sentiment and emotion in human utterances. First, the language model is enhanced, by replacing the BERT neural language model with RoBERTa. Next, the emotion-based text corpus is enlarged. A novel process of augmenting an emotion-labeled text corpus using semantically similar data from an unlabeled corpus, inspired by semi-supervised learning methods, is proposed. The process of using the Common Crawl web archive to create an enlarged corpus, named CORTEX+pCC, is presented. An empathetic dialogue system named Terabot, incorporating the elaborated method, is also described. The system is designed to employ elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy for psychiatric patients. The improved language model trained on the enlarged CORTEX+pCC corpus resulted in remarkably improved sentiment and emotion recognition. The average accuracy and F1 scores increased by around 3% and 8% relative, which will allow the dialogue system to operate more appropriately for the emotional state of the patient. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Automatic segmentation of head and neck tumor plays an important role for radiomics analysis. In this short paper, we propose an automatic segmentation method for head and neck tumors from PET and CT images based on the combination of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and hybrid active contours. Specifically, we first introduce a multi-channel 3d U-Net to segment the tumor with the concatenated PET and CT images. Then, we estimate the segmentation uncertainty by model ensembles, and define a segmentation quality score to select the cases with high uncertainties. Finally, we develop a hybrid active contour model to refine the high uncertainty cases. We evaluate the proposed method on the MICCAI 2020 HECKTOR challenge and achieve promising performance with average dice Similarity Coefficient, precision and recall of 0.7525, 0.8384, 0.7471 respectively. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The paper is devoted to the study of chiral metamaterials based on three-dimensional helices. Particular attention is paid to tunable structures embedded into the Fabry-Perot resonator formed by plane-parallel silicon wafers. Numerical simulations show the control of the polarization plane rotation angle as well as ellipticity of the transmitted wave by tuning the thickness of the resonator in a wide spectral range. The influence of the resonator was demonstrated in an experiment at 35 GHz using a metamaterial formed by a hybrid technology based on 3d-printing, molding and shadow metal deposition. It is shown that the enhancement of chiral effects in the long-wavelength region could be explained by the anisotropy helical grid structures. The advantage of the proposed metamaterial is control by changing resonator cavity, not parameters of the resonant metal elements. The results obtained are promising for the creation of tunable systems for controlling the polarization in the microwave range.

For the future development of cultural technology, access to the cultural foundations of these culture carriers is necessary. One established theory of this cultural foundation is the collective unconsciousness with archetypes as building blocks. A methodological challenge is adequate access to these unconscious layers of the human mind. Recent research in neuroscience contributes in ways to determine the minimally conscious state. Combining these neuroscience results with the upcoming development of brain/body-computer interfaces enables us to envision new ways to establish interactions among culture carriers like humans and their cultural determinations. First, we present an overview of the known ways to get access to conscious layers, and then we discuss the potential of upcoming approaches. New technology enables us to develop new types of interfaces which are directly connected to brain/body processes. Next to direct brain connections, we introduce and discuss the possibilities of tapping into other physiological processes, especially processes of the autonomous nervous system. Finally, we are presenting and discussing the theoretical implications of the architecture of the human mind and the interfaces between all components of the conscious and unconscious parts. Potential access to the five unconscious layers of the human mind can enable new types of cultural developments.

The use of games in learning has demonstrably positive impacts on experiences in the classroom. At Marymount University, the STEM faculty in biology, chemistry and physics have long utilized a wide-variety of gamifying techniques to bring gameplay into the classroom to improve attitudes of students towards science. Methods utilized have included commercial game software (e.g. quizlet live, kahoot), taboo-style games to practice complex scientific terminology, creating 3d printed manipulatives to build biological molecules, using card games to understand chemical reactions and playing astronomy role-playing games. The onset of the global pandemic in 2020/2021 revealed the need to find tools to convert these experiences into a format for remote/virtual delivery. In this paper we discuss the games that we utilize in a variety of STEM content areas, provide workflow suggestions for content experts to collaborate with programming experts to convert games into a virtual format and showcase our work in this collaborative area by presenting three different styles of physical-virtual game adaptation;1) the use of google sites/sheets/docs for playing astronomy-related role-playing games through Zoom, 2) the creation of a webGL-based chemistry card game using the Unity game development engine and hosted on *** for widespread delivery and 3) the development of an interdisciplinary STEM Escape Room in virtual reality on the Oculus Quest 2. The open source nature of the tools used mean these techniques can all be adopted widely by interdisciplinary teams to create a diverse range of virtual gamified learning experiences. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper, presents the non-linear analysis of the most common configurations of Switched Reluctance Generators (SRG). Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of two-phase (4/2), three-phase (6/4), and four-phase (8/6) SRGs have been carried out using (ANSYS Maxwell 16 - 3d Modeler - Transient solution). The simulation process was performed utilizing the Asymmetric Half Bridge Converter (AHBC) model as an external excitation circuit for the SRG model. Research interests have been dedicated recently to SRG as a promising and reliable candidate in both low-speed and high-speed applications, especially for small-scale renewable applications. However, this study includes the non-linear validation for both the conventional short-pitched and the fully-pitched SRG winding configurations at low-speed simulation conditions. This study aims to analyze the non-linear performance of SRG and validate the influence of stator and rotor pole angles ( $\beta_{s}$ and $\beta_{r}$ ) variation in addition to the excitation current patterns on the induced output voltage. The dynamic performance of SRG has been simulated, with the exact description of rotor angular position, number of conductors per phase, and the excitation current pattern for each case study. The FE simulation was applied to the same SRG test model; i.e., the same dimensions, the same angular speed, and the same number of conductors per phase. Moreover, SRG FEA output results have been recorded and compared to the corresponding results delivered from a related SRG linear analysis study done by the authors; hence the final proposed design was highlighted for further prototype implementation. The outcome of this study provides the recommended SRG design that can generate the maximum induced output voltage for the same machine design parameters.

A large amount of point cloud data has been measured and accumulated at various locations for Japanese public works by introducing mobile mapping systems and terrestrial laser scanners. However, since point cloud data are a huge set of points that hold position coordinates, their use is limited in the unprocessed state. For this reason, we have been proposing a method for constructing a product model that structures point cloud data by assigning the meaning of a planimetric feature to the points using a plan of completion drawing that shows the completed shape of a construction object and 3d map data with high precision for autonomous driving. However, the applicable scope of the existing method is limited to the plan of completion drawing and the already developed sections of road maps. Therefore, a method of extracting road features from point cloud data using deep learning has been proposed. However, it requires manual preparation of a huge amount and highly qualified training data. In this study, we propose a method to automatically generate training data for constructing a road feature identification model from point cloud data automatically extracted using road maps. The usefulness of the proposed method has been confirmed through demonstration experiments.

Production of components through forming requires extensive machining, high tool costs and long manufacturing times. Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), a direct energy deposition process, uses conventional arc welding technology to generate complex near net shape 3d The movement of the heat source creates different heating and cooling patterns at different locations and causes distortions in the substrate and the part. This work presents a method to minimize the distortions and residual stresses of the substrate during the WAAM process. A three-dimensional finite element model has been developed using the software LS-dYNA. With numerical simulation, different fixation strategies of the substrate are compared according to the total distortion and the stresses. The results show that the fixation strategy of the substrate has a great influence on the distortion as well as the residual stress distribution. The influence of edge fixation strategy in minimizing the deformations is more than the corner fixation strategy. Among the edge fixation, the transversal edge fixation strategy has been found to have greater influence in enhancing the geometrical accuracy of the substrate by reducing the undesired stress distribution.
