The use of 360◦ videos has been increasing steadily in the 2010s, as content creators and users search for more immersive experiences. The freedom to choose where to look at during the video may hinder the overall experience instead of enhancing it, as there is no guarantee that the user will focus on relevant sections of the scene. Visual annotations superimposed on the video, such as text boxes or arrow icons, can help guide the user through the narrative of the video while maintaining freedom of movement. This paper presents a web-based immersive visualizer for 360◦ videos that contain dynamic media annotations, rendered in real-time. A set of annotations was created with the purpose of providing information or guiding the user to points of interest. The visualizer can be used with a computer, using a keyboard and mouse or HTC Vive, and in mobile devices with Cardboard VR headsets, to experience the video in virtual reality, which is made possible with the webVR API. The visualizer was evaluated through usability tests, to analyze the impact of different annotation techniques on the users’ experience. The obtained results demonstrate that annotations can assist in guiding the user during the video, and a careful design is imperative so that they are not intrusive and distracting for the viewers. © 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

3d object detection is one of the vital tasks in many fields, especially for autonomous driving. Among all technology paths for this task, the detection based on monocular images has been proven an efficient way with low cost. However, the performance of most current algorithms is far from satisfactory. The current leading systems can't achieve the accuracy which is comparable with LidAR-based algorithms, while the real-time problems also exist. In this paper, we propose a novel anchor-free model for monocular 3d object detection. We choose the effective modified denseNet as the feature extraction part. The Joint Pyramid Upsampling is applied to fuse features maps for multiply scales, and the Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling is used to maximize the context information. Finally, 5 convolution layers are connected with the feature map to predict the information. We call the model dense-JANet and train it on the large autonomous driving dataset, called nuScenes, which has more scenes and data than KITTI. Experiments show that dense-JANet's performance exceeds SOTA model on small object prediction and orientation prediction, while the proposed model can fully meet the real-time requirements.

data fusion in multi-sensor systems requires an accurate calibration of the sensors. To this end, the sensor data itself can be registered, which evades often inaccurate, manual measurements on the sensor setup. This work proposes a flexible registration framework for the calibration of multi-sensor systems in unstructured environments, denoted Unstructured Cross-Source Registration (UCSR). In unstructured environments, the registration of sensor data presents a major challenge due to the absence of structure, flat surfaces, and clearly separated objects. Cross-source data, captured with different types of sensors, presents differences in scale, measurement density, accuracy, noise, and outlier characteristics, which poses an additional challenge in registration. At present, three methods for the cross-source registration are included in UCSR. Each method is evaluated independently on real-world 2d and 3d data. To achieve a stable calibration, UCSR combines the registration results of the individual methods according to their accuracy and robustness. UCSR does neither require special calibration objects nor human intervention. Cross-source 2d and 3d sensor data is captured with a mobile robotic off-road platform. UCSR is able to register sensor data with a decalibration of 2.0 m along and 20° around each axis. UCSR achieves a mean accuracy of 5.1 cm and 0.956° on 2d and 3d data from unstructured environments.

The presented paper aims to create a more affordable way to present culturally-historical objects like paintings, masterpieces, tapestries, objects, artifacts, etc., and make it more accessible to visually impaired or blind people. The State of the Art of the team shows that the already used method received good feedback at the exhibition "Battle of Pavia 1525" in Pavia, Italy, from more than 11 000 people, who take part in exhibition in Italy. This encouraged the team to continue developing the idea. An approach on the base of the Bulgarian patent application named "Tactile graphical tile for visually impaired people" is described. By using innovative methods for 3d digitalization, also by using more accessible and affordable materials for 3d printing the culturally-historical objects can be presented in schools for visually impaired or blind people. By using approaches are shown how can be reduced the time for 3d digitalization. Conclusion and future developments are presented. © 2019 The Authors, published by EdP Sciences.

3d object detection based on monocular camera data is a key enabler for autonomous driving. The task however, is ill-posed due to lack of depth information in 2d images. Recent deep learning methods show promising results to recover depth information from single images by learning priors about the environment. Several competing strategies tackle this problem. In addition to the network design, the major difference of these competing approaches lies in using a supervised or self-supervised optimization loss function, which require different data and ground truth information. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a 3d object detection pipeline which is parameterizable with different depth estimation configurations. We implement a simple distance calculation approach based on camera intrinsics and 2d bounding box size, a self-supervised, and a supervised learning approach for depth estimation. Ground truth depth information cannot be recorded reliable in real world scenarios. This shifts our training focus to simulation data. In simulation, labeling and ground truth generation can be automatized. We evaluate the detection pipeline on simulator data and a real world sequence from an autonomous vehicle on a race track. The benefit of training on simulation data for the application of the network on real world data is investigated. Advantages and drawbacks of the different depth estimation strategies are discussed.

This paper introduces a novel magnetic coupling (MC) topology, which is able to achieve significant torque density values by adding a limited amount of extra permanent magnets (PMs). Indeed, the proposed MC architecture, namely enhanced magnetic coupling (EMC), includes both axial and radial concepts in the same structure. In particular, one radial and two axial MCs are considered and embedded in a single device. Hence, this configuration allows to boost the transmitted torque that is sum of three contributions, while keeping almost unaltered the overall device's volume. The geometry of the EMC is discussed and a 2d subdomain analysis is employed for its preliminary study and fast performance evaluation. The results obtained by the 2d subdomain approach are then compared and validated against 3d finite element method (FEM).

The three dimensional finite element analysis can accurately calculate the static performance of super hybrid stepping motors such as back-EMF and holding torque. This paper uses Opera electromagnetic analysis software to analyze a two-phase 50-pair-pole super hybrid stepping motor, analyzes the working mechanism of the increase of holding torque and obtains the holding torque characteristic curve. The magnetic flux of tooth layer is much higher than ordinary hybrid stepping motor. Simultaneously, this paper analyzes the effect of the ratio of tooth width to tooth pitch and ratio of tooth height to tooth pitch on motor torque separately. The tooth shape is optimized while other dimensions remain unchanged, and the optimal ratios are obtained.

In this paper, the concept of direction of arrival (doA) estimation using electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) antenna designed to operate in IEEE 802.11p vehicular communication standard has been investigated with respect to different possible elevation angles of a radio frequency (RF) signal impinging the antenna. To this end, two different possible sets of the 3d antenna radiation patterns have been used together with power-pattern cross-correlation (PPCC) algorithm and its extension that covers multiple calibration planes (PPCCMCP). Numerical simulations of the PPCC and PPCC-MCP angle estimation procedures at 5.89 GHz have been performed to verify the overall doA estimation accuracies in the horizontal plane for different, and unknown at the moment of estimation, elevation angles.

The automated detection of cortical lesions (CLs) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) is a challenging task that, despite its clinical relevance, has received very little attention. Accurate detection of the small and scarce lesions requires specialized sequences and high or ultra-high field MRI. For supervised training based on multimodal structural MRI at 7T, two experts generated ground truth segmentation masks of 60 patients with 2014 CLs. We implemented a simplified 3d U-Net with three resolution levels (3d U-Net-). By increasing the complexity of the task (adding brain tissue segmentation), while randomly dropping input channels during training, we improved the performance compared to the baseline. Considering a minimum lesion size of 0.75 μ L, we achieved a lesion-wise cortical lesion detection rate of 67% and a false positive rate of 42%. However, 393 (24%) of the lesions reported as false positives were post-hoc confirmed as potential or definite lesions by an expert. This indicates the potential of the proposed method to support experts in the tedious process of CL manual segmentation. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Highly accurate localization technologies are a key enabler of future intelligent transport system applications including automated and cooperative driving as well as location based services. One major challenge is positioning in urban areas, where high buildings with reflecting surfaces lead to signal blockage, multipath effects and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) reception. As a countermeasure, deterministic NLOS modelling approaches using 3d map aided GNSS (3dMA-GNSS) have been developed and show promising results in mitigating those effects. However, most prior studies focused on advancing the method itself, while the implementational aspects of such a system regarding real-world applications remain unsolved. Major challenges lie within the generation and dissemination of suitable 3d maps as well as the computational cost of the classification of measurements into LOS resp. NLOS behaviour. The aim of this paper is to connect the parts of highly precise GNSS based urban localization, digital maps, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) based cooperative positioning and data dissemination. A map dissemination scheme for precomputed sky occupancy masks using V2X communication technology is evolved and discussed. Furthermore, the data rate requirements are compared with the capability of the existing IEEE802.11p (ITS-G5) V2X standard in terms of data rate and the range of the communication link.
