In this paper, we present a Block Matching and 3d filtering (BM3d) algorithm dedicated to the division-of-focal plane (doFP) polarization image sensors. This method, based on grouping and a non-local filtering method named collaborative filtering, exploits all the different polarization channels simultaneously. Extensive experimental results on the test images show that the algorithm outperforms a wide range of existing denoising algorithms for doFP images including the state-of-the-art principal component analysis (PCA) based denoising algorithm visually by preserving more details, as well as in terms of Peak-Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (PSNR).

The paper discusses the use of 3d digitization and additive manufacturing technologies in the field of medicine. The paper focuses on design and manufacture of an orthopedic corset. described are the methods of designing and manufacturing of orthopedic corsets according to the individual requirements of the patient at present, and a more detailed description of the design and manufacturing process using 3d digitization and additive manufacturing. The paper introduces three variants of corset design and manufacture, with the description of the materials selected for use. The main purpose of the paper is to describe the process of the effective design and manufacture of orthopedic corset using 3d digitization and additive manufacturing technologies.

due to the highly interrelation between architecture and engineering involved in the early design stage of 3d printing, form-finding is the critical step in the large-scale 3d printing projects. This paper focused on the research of form-finding applied in large-scale 3d printed structures, specifically, in the design of two pedestrian bridges. A three-step form finding approach was introduced in this paper. Multiple numerical methods were involved in the approach to find an optimal solution for both aesthetics and structural design for two 3d printed pedestrian bridges. The application of the three steps of form-finding, which take consideration of material properties, site limitations, applied loads etc., to the design of the large-scale 3d printed bridges were discussed in details in this paper. The approach of form-finding in an early designing stage disused in this paper helps to understand the combination of architecture and structure engineering. © 2018 and published by the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural design Research in Asia (CAAdRIA) in Hong Kong.

In this paper a novel idea of estimating the 3d geometry and building material of indoor environments is proposed. The idea is based on assumption that the received radio signal is distorted due to interaction with the surrounding objects and thus includes the signature of the radio environment. We describe the methodology how to apply radio environment signatures for characterization of geometry and building material of indoor environments applying machine learning tools using ray tracing simulations and ultra-wide band communication technology. The idea is based on the assumption that the emerging broadband wireless systems applies multiple antenna and is able to estimate the channel impulse response for each transmit-receive antenna pair.

In order to provide intelligent services in complex and diverse indoor environments, it is necessary to understand spatial features of indoor objects: furniture and items. Function-Behavior-Structure Map (FBSMAP), which is a novel indoor representation method that focuses on space functionality for intelligent semantic services, is introduced in this study. The three steps of FBSMAP are defining spatial components, constructing semantic map for indoor environment, and securing spatial features. This novel implementation method is implemented and examined on 3d house models. © 2018 and published by the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural design Research in Asia (CAAdRIA) in Hong Kong.

With the recent trend of promoting Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to first-class citizens in accelerating compute-intensive applications in networking, cloud services and artificial intelligence, FPGAs face two major challenges in sustaining competitive advantages in performance and energy efficiency for diverse cloud workloads: 1) limited configuration capability for supporting light-weight computations/on-chip data storage to accelerate emerging search-/data-intensive applications. 2) lack of architectural support to hide reconfiguration overhead for assisting virtualization in a cloud computing environment. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable memory-oriented computing fabric, namely Liquid Silicon-Monona (L-Si), enabled by emerging nonvolatile memory technology i.e. RRAM, to address these two challenges. Specifically, L-Si addresses the first challenge by virtue of a new architecture comprising a 2d array of physically identical but functionally-configurable building blocks. It, for the first time, extends the configuration capabilities of existing FPGAs from computation to the whole spectrum ranging from computation to data storage. It allows users to better customize hardware by flexibly partitioning hardware resources between computation and memory, greatly benefiting emerging search-and data-intensive applications. To address the second challenge, L-Si provides scalable multi-context architectural support to minimize reconfiguration overhead for assisting virtualization. In addition, we provide compiler support to facilitate the programming of applications written in high-level programming languages (e.g. OpenCL) and frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow, MapReduce) while fully exploiting the unique architectural capability of L-Si. Our evaluation results show L-Si achieves 99.6% area reduction, 1.43x throughput improvement and 94.0% power reduction on search-intensive benchmarks, as compared with the FPGA baseline. Virtual reality applications (VRA) with 3d sounds on smartphones were used by six blind adults for indoor navigation. Each application provided users with three audio outputs with linear, logarithmic and customized response curves, that guided them during their tour within a real scenario that was previously virtualized using Unity 3d. The audio was transmitted, via low-power Bluetooth, from the mobile to the bone conduction headphones that were used to guide the user during his tour through an unknown space. The user's avatar moved through the virtualized environment simultaneously with the participant's movements in the real scenario. The movements of the user and the duration of the tour to go from a starting point to a target point were recorded each tour, in order to compare the efficiency and precision achieved by each sound during navigation. This research established that the VRA with a female voice and a customized response, improved the efficiency by 59% in locating target points within unfamiliar environments (p-value= 0.03614) compared to musical sound having a logarithmic response. Furthermore, it was found that the female voice and the 440Hz beeps increase the navigation precision compared to musical sound. 3d sound for indoor navigation could replace the sounds inside the place, with a small variation in efficiency and precision. © 2018 The Author(s).

When divers rescue people who have accidents at sea, they are in danger because of parts of obstacles floating in the sea. If they can confirm their own positions, their activities will become much safer. In this study, assuming we specify the positions of the divers rescuing in the accidents and support their works, we investigate undersea positioning technology using the electromagnetic waves with low frequencies less than midrange waves. In some preceding studies, an ultra-long wave of 10 kHz theoretically attenuates 3.5 dB per meter [1]. In addition, the simulation of the position estimation in the vertical section of the sea has already reported. In this report, we indicated the superiority of using Receiving Signal Strength: RSS to the phase difference between a transmitted signal and the received one. We also showed the result of the position estimation of the transmitting antenna at depth from 2 m to 8 m.

In this paper, we present a web framework for optimizing the streaming of large 3d applications to allow an instant interaction independently from network bandwidth or available processing power of the rendering unit. Content that gets continuously refined is already state of the art for many web apps and improves the user experience. To also achieve this for web 3d applications, we combine the progressive transmission of geometry and texture data and additionally, we propose an overall rating function to control the priorities between different media transmission blocks. However, using streaming techniques usually results in low-quality visualizations of the 3d scenes until enough data has been loaded. Therefore, we introduce a novel method based on texture similarities that greatly reduces the amount of textures that must be transmitted while the visual quality of the scene remains almost the same even during loading.
