The advantage of the globoid worm gearing, that all teeth of the worm are in mesh in every moment, is well-known. The main advantage of the helical worm gearing, the easy production is also known. The paper presents a new gearing construction that tries to combine these two characteristics in one novel worm gearing. This solution, similarly to the manufacturing of helical worm, applies turning machine instead of the special teething machine of globoid worm, but the path of the cutting edge is not parallel to the axis of the worm but has an angle in the vertical plane. The resulted in form is a hyperbolic surface of revolution that is very close to the hourglass-form of a globoid worm. The worm wheel then generated by this quasi-globoid worm. The paper introduces the geometric arrangements of this new worm generating method then investigates the meshing characteristics of such gearings for different worm profiles. The considered profiles are circular and elliptic. The meshing curves are generated and compared. For the modelling of the new gearing and performing the meshing analysis the Surface Constructor 3d surface generator and motion simulator software application was used.

Human activity understanding from RGB-d data has attracted increasing attention since the first work reported in 2010. Over this period, many benchmark datasets have been created to facilitate the development and evaluation of new algorithms. However, the existing datasets are mostly captured in laboratory environment with small number of actions and small variations, which impede the development of higher level algorithms for real world applications. Thus, this paper proposes a large scale dataset along with a set of evaluation protocols. The large dataset is created by combining several existing publicly available datasets and can be expanded easily by adding more datasets. The large dataset is suitable for testing algorithms from different perspectives using the proposed evaluation protocols. Four state-of-the-art algorithms are evaluated on the large combined dataset and the results have verified the limitations of current algorithms and the effectiveness of the large dataset. © 2018, Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

Two-phase gas-liquid slug flow in inclined pipes is important in oil/gas transportation. due to the fact that slug flow can change characteristics from one well to another, it is important to investigate the response of the characteristics of a two-phase slug flow as a result of a change in the pipe inclination angle. This paper therefore presents an investigation of the effect of pipe inclination on the hydrodynamics of slug flow in a 67-mm internal diameter inclinable pipe. The slug flow regime was generated using air-silicone oil mixture over a range of gas () and liquid () superficial velocities. The 3d structures are particularly difficult to visualise using conventional optical techniques because even if the pipe wall is transparent near-wall bubbles would mask the flow deep inside the pipe. Therefore, more sophisticated methods are required. An advanced wire mesh sensors (WMS) was used and the two-phase mixtures employed was air-silicone oil. In addition, Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) was used to determine: the velocities of the Taylor bubbles and liquid slugs, the slug frequencies, the lengths of Taylor bubbles and the liquid slugs, the void fractions in the Taylor bubbles and liquid slugs. A differential pressure transducer was used to measure the pressure drops along the length of the pipe. It was found that the flow pattern is affected by the pipe inclination angle. The results from the WMS revealed that unlike what is commonly assumed when modelling pipe flow, the flow is not symmetric, with a lot of distortion, which turned out to be high. This article aims to present the construction of one-microphone mechatronic sound intensity 3d probe and verify how it is usable to direction of arrival (dOA) estimation of sound waves in auditory frequency range. Experiments with the prototype one-channel measurement system were conducted and the results were compared with geometrical model and commercial format-A microphone. The results show, that use of the medium quality microphone supported by mechatronic positioning system allows to build a sound intensity probe with acceptable quality to easy recognize the dOA of direct and reflected sounds.

Looking towards the future of education in the 21st century, the importance of a strong STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curriculum is unquestioned, with current EU projects discussing the common challenges adapting innovative teaching and learning methods and inspiring future generations of scientists. Recent predictions on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies have suggested potential growth estimates of up to $182 billion in revenue by 2025, including hardware, software and content, which would exceed television revenue. VR and AR have the potential to become a standard tool in education and could revolutionise the teaching and learning (T&L) process via interaction with learning objects in 3d environments. This paper discusses the main concepts of learning objects with focus on the 3d element of knowledge components within emerging VR/AR educational ecosystems that need to be constructed, implemented and evaluated in order to create a teaching and learning environment that engages the senses in unique and innovative ways.

The aim of this article is the design and construction of a robotic head intended for classification and recognition applications using algorithms based on deep Learning. The robotic head works by performing a classification on a number of 1000 different objects thanks to the use of a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained with ImageNet. On the other hand, applying the transfer learning technique in a CNN, allows the recognition of faces on a database of 185 people. The robotic structure also has a voice recognition system, which allows the user to interact with the robot using different voice commands. The construction of the structure is mainly divided into 3d printed components, servomotors, and an Arduino UNO microcontroller, which oversees all the movement that the structure performs.

The paper presents an approach for integration of three-dimensional world models (octree based maps) in multi-robot systems. The process of maps integration is based on ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm that has been adapted and optimized to operate on octomaps. The presented method has been verified in numerous experiments both in simulation and with publicly available datasets captured from robots. The solution can be applied to various robotic applications such as underwater robots, aerial robots or robots equipped with manipulators - wherever 3d maps are needed and a task is performed by group of mobile robots.

Many family carers are single parents over the age of 60. despite poor health, the majority continue to care for a son/daughter with complex needs, such as intellectual disability, autism and cognitive deficits (hereafter referred to as Id). It is estimated that only 21% of these ageing carers have made adequate plans for the future care of their son or daughter. One significant barrier to future planning is a parent's fear that they will not be able to make regular visits to their loved one if he or she leaves the family home. People with complex needs are often placed in new residences that prove difficult or impossible for parents/guardians to access. This fear of separation can prevent carers from engaging in future planning. A review of modern communication technologies, for maintaining a distant caring/family relationship, reveals that 2d synchronous video based communication tools such as Skype and FaceTime do not represent a satisfying alternative to personal visits. It will be argued that 3d communication tools can form the basis for more fulfilling interactions. Three key differences have been identified between 2d and 3d communications that are relevant to maintaining family relationships: eye contact, touch, and the feeling of presence (sharing the same space). Addressing these differences, this paper offers an insight into advancing of 3d technologies for real time 3d scanning with real-time virtual, augmented, and mixed reality systems technologies, such as Microsoft's Holoportation. In addition, the haptic feedback options that are currently available for use with 3d systems and solutions are reviewed. The majority of haptic feedback devices have been developed for gaming application. However, typically, these products are not suitable for people with complex needs.
