Additive manufacturing of three-dimensional objects are now more and more realised through 3d printing, known as an evolutional paradigm in the manufacturing industry. Artificial intelligence is currently finding wide applications to 3d printing for an intelligent, efficient, high quality, mass customised and service-oriented production process. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of artificial intelligence in 3d printing. Before a printing task begins, the printability of given 3d objects can be determined through a printability checker using machine learning. The prefabrication of slicing is accelerated through parallel slicing algorithms and the path planning is optimised intelligently. In the aspect of service and security, intelligent demand matching and resource allocation algorithms enable a Cloud service platform and evaluation model to provide clients with an on-demand service and access to a collection of shared resources. We also present three machine learning algorithms to detect product defects in the presence of cyber-attacks. Based on the reviews on various applications, printability with multi-indicators, reduction of complexity threshold, acceleration of prefabrication, real-time control, enhancement of security and defect detection for customised designs are seen of good opportunities for further research, especially in the era of Industry 4.0. © 2017 Chinese Automation and Computing Society in the UK - CACSUK.

The paper addresses the issue of modeling the flow process in transmission pipelines. A base model used for numerical simulation is introduced. Under certain assumptions concerning steady state analysis, the differential equations describing the process are solved analytically for two cases: zero and nonzero inclination angle α. These equations describe a constant flow rate and a corresponding distribution of the pressure along the considered pipeline for both cases. The pipe length at which the pipeline is choking (the mass flow is equal zero) for given boundary pressures and inclination angle, is also derived. Convergence of the proposed solution for inclination angle α→ 0 to the zero tilt solution, is proved. An exemplary practical relationship based on obtained equations is provided as a 3d chart. A test pipeline with adjustable inclination angles of its selected parts is considered. The analytic solution for the effective angle is compared with numerical solutions, which show relevant discrepancies between the results obtained for nonzero angles. Clearly, the numerical solution for a straight pipeline (with the increasing number of segments) is convergent to the analytic solution. Moreover, up to 16°, the analytic approximation (using an effective inclination angle) is sufficient, and produces similar results as the numerical simulation.

This paper investigates the problem of Teaching by demonstration (Tbd) on a KUKA lightweight robot (LBR). Motions are recorded by a human operator, and then the data is used to model a nonlinear system, i.e., the dynamic motor primitive (dMP). In order to learn from multiple demonstrations, Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) are employed rather than using conventional Gaussian process for the evaluation of the non-linear term of the dMP. Then the Gaussian mixture regression (GMR) algorithm is applied to generate a synthesized trajectory with smaller position errors in 3d space. The proposed approach is tested and demonstrated by performing two tasks with KUKA iiwa robot. © 2017 Chinese Automation and Computing Society in the UK - CACSUK.

For businesses high quality is an extremely important criterion to maintain and improve their competitiveness. To ensure the required quality standards for example in the automotive sector, sampling methods are common practice. This means taking a number of products out of the production line into a special quality measurement facility at the end of a specified timeframe. New 3d measurement approaches use optical systems, consisting of a variable number of stereo camera units, which can be integrated into a production line. They allow a highly precise measurement of 3d surfaces in a short time interval and therefore enable companies to check agreed quality of each product within the tact of their production line. These measurement systems use stereo photography and photogrammetry to create a 3d model of the scanned product, which can be compared with the belonging predefined standard 3d model. If this comparison detects deviations between the compared models the quality management system is able to identify these deviations by utilizing knowledge from a predefined failure catalogue and is thereby enabled to identify the fault's cause as well as its origin. In the next step the information about the faults origin is used to inform the relevant positions along the supply chain about the fault and its cause. It is furthermore used to supply the maintenance staff with guidelines for the necessary maintenance steps to allow a swift removal of possible defects as well as to trigger intrapreneurial behaviour. This paper gives an overview of the measuring system, as well as the concept for an automated failure detection and correction based on the data gained from the optical measurement process and the application of a rule based system.

This paper presents a scalable model-based approach for 3d scene reconstruction using a moving RGB-d camera. The proposed approach enhances the accuracy of pose estimation due to exploiting the rich information in the multi-channel RGB-d image data. Our approach has lots of advantages on the reconstruction quality of the 3d scene as compared with the conventional approaches using sparse features for pose estimation. The pre-learned image-based 3d model provides multiple templates for sampled views of the model, which are used to estimate the poses of the frames in the input RGB-d video without the need of a priori internal and external camera parameters. Through template-to-frame registration, the reconstructed 3d scene can be loaded in an augmented reality (AR) environment to facilitate displaying, interaction, and rendering of an image-based AR application. Finally, we verify the ability of the established reconstruction system on publicly available benchmark datasets, and compare it with the sate-of-the-art pose estimation algorithms. The results indicate that our approach outperforms the compared methods on the accuracy of pose estimation.

Current telemedicine systems for remote medical consultation are based on decades old video-conferencing technology. Their primary role is to deliver video and voice communication between medical providers and to transmit vital signs of the patient. This technology, however, does not provide the expert physician with the same hands-on experience as when examining a patient in person. Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR and AR) on the other hand have the capacity to enhance the experience and communication between healthcare professionals in geographically distributed locations. By transmitting RGB+ d video of the patient, the expert physician can interact with this real-time 3d representation in novel ways. Furthermore, the use of AR technology at the patient side has potential to improve communication by providing clear visual instructions to the caregiver. In this paper, we propose a framework for 3d real-time communication that combines interaction via VR and AR. We demonstrate the capabilities of our framework on a prototype system consisting of a depth camera, projector and 3d display. The system is used to analyze the network performance and data transmission quality of the multimodal streaming in a remote scenario.

As 3d audio is a fundamental medium of virtual reality (VR), 3d audio real-time rendering technique is essential for the implementation of VR, especially on the mobile devices. While constrained by the limited computational power, the computation load is too high to implement 3d audio real-time rendering on the mobile devices. To solve this problem, we propose a frame-independent and parallel method of framing convolution, to parallelize process of 3d audio rendering using head-related transfer function (HRTF). In order to refrain from the dependency of overlap-add convolution over the adjacent frames, the data of convolution result is added on the final results of the two adjacent frames. We found our method could reduce the calculation time of 3d audio rendering significantly. The results were 0.74 times, 0.5 times and 0.36 times the play duration of si03. wav (length of 27 s), with Snapdragon 801, Kirin 935 and Helio X10 Turbo, respectively.

A facial animation system is proposed for visual singing synthesis. With a reconstructed 3d head mesh model, both finite element method and anatomical model are used to simulate articulatory deformation corresponding to each phoneme with musical note. Based on an articulatory song corpus, articulatory movements, phonemes and musical notes are trained simultaneously to obtain the visual co-articulation model by a context-dependent Hidden Markov Model. Articulatory animations corresponding to all phonemes are concatenated by visual co-articulation model to produce the song synchronized articulatory animation. Experimental results demonstrate the system can synthesize realistic song synchronized articulatory animation for increasing the human computer interaction capability objectively and subjectively.

With the development of multichannel audio systems, the 3d audio systems have already come into our lives. But the increasing number of channels brought challenges to storage and transmission of large amounts of data. Spatial Audio Coding (SAC), the mainstream of 3d audio coding technologies, is key to reproduce 3d multichannel audio signals with efficient compression. Just Noticeable difference (JNd) characteristics of human auditory system can be utilized to reduce spatial perceptual redundancy in the spatial parameters quantization process of SAC. However, the current quantization methods of SAC fully combine the JNd characteristics. In this paper, we proposed a Perceptual Lossless Quantization of Spatial Parameter (PLQSP) method, the azimuthal and elevational quantization step sizes of spatial parameters are combined with JNds. Both objective and subjective experiments have conducted to prove the high efficiency of PLQSP method. Compared with reference method SLQP-L/SLQP-H, the quantization codebook size of PLQSP has decreased by 16.99% and 27.79% respectively, while preserving similar listening quality.

People spend up to one-third of lives asleep, and healthy sleep habits can make a big difference in their quality of life. But in modern society, many people have unhealthy sleep diaries and suffer from various sleep disorders, which may result in irregular mood fluctuations or even mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. We propose the Emotion-Aware Smart Tips (EAST), a novel approach that could help to inform users about their irregular emotional states with smart tips to improve their sleep qualities. EAST aims at helping users keep healthy sleep schedules and emotional states by providing smart tips through a novel model that combines multivariate regression, random forest, and neural network to quantify the relations between sleep patterns and emotional states. Prototype implementation and initial experiments of EAST in mobile phones have demonstrated its desired functionality and practicality for real-world deployment. © 2017 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).
