We study the failure of an initially intact ice sheet against an inclined structure, where the most prevalent forces on the ice sheet are vertical. We describe the resulting vertical bending with the Reissner-Mindlin first-order shear deformation theory, implemented in a three-dimensional in-house finite element code. When certain stress criteria are met, the plate fractures according to a phantom node algorithm. The simulated fracture process is validated with analytical models and field experiments described in the literature. Focus is laid on cantilever beam tests and vertical breakthrough tests. Simulations agree with the literature data in both the distribution of stresses leading to fracture and the most common resulting fracture patterns. In future, our aim is to couple the finite element code with an existing discrete element code to simulate ice plate failure against a structure and the subsequent pile-up process.

We show two different absolute distance measurement methods with micrometer accuracy based on frequency combs, and we discuss possible applications. Using a mode- locked laser and MEMS-based tracking optics, we measure the 3d position of a retroreflector within 10 ms and with a 24 μm volumetric accuracy. We also investigate modulator-based combs and show that they enable highly sensitive surface topography measurements with microsecond acquisition times and micrometer precision. Moreover, the potential for photonic integration of frequency comb sources is explored. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A good qualitative understanding and an accurate quantitative description of fluid flow in randomly water cooled packed bed reactors (WCPBRs) are important. In order to reflect the local phenomena, a spatially resolving three-dimensional (3d) flow simulation is needed. In this work, the packing structure in cylindrical tube was randomly packed with spherical particles and the flow through the packed bed were modeled by discrete element method (dEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFd) respectively. For modeling an 3d representation of the geometric structure of the packing, dEM were applied to generate the packed bed with random packing of spherical particles. The obtained numerical radial porosity of the generated packed bed is compared with the empirical correlation from the literature. In this work, a method for meshing the particle-particle and particle-wall contact points in the fixed beds was presented. Compared to the shrinkage approach that commonly used in the literature, this method reduces the error of change in porosity, and achieves good quality meshing. CFd simulations were performed for water flow through randomly packed bed, in the laminar, transitional and turbulent flow regime. To validate the proposed geometry and grid, the Ergun correlation and Eisfeld and Schnitzlein correlation for predicting of pressure drop were used. The simulated averaged pressure drops were in a good agreement with the Eisfeld and Schnitzlein correlation. From the simulation, the localized and detailed flow characteristics were captured, and the stagnant regions were identified. Copyright © 2015 by JSME.

The great circle route and rhumb line are two important spherical curves. The characteristic of the former curve could be best understood on a sphere, while the characteristic of the latter is fully expressed on a projected map, which is Mercator's projection. This paper utilized electronic map APIs and web3d techniques to provide an interactive webpage to display 2d and 3d views. A projected Mercator world map is displayed in 2d view, and a virtual globe is displayed in 3d view. The great circle route and rhumb line are visually compared in multi-dimensional environment. The technique demonstrated in this paper provides a convenient way to understand the great circle route and rhumb line, and is especially useful in education.

3d virtual Earth is one of the directions of network GIS. Most scholars always pay more attention to the management of mass geo-information, efficient transmission, and real-time visualization. So as to improve the efficiency of visualization with large-scale tile data, this paper put forward a method of disk cache based on the technology of HTML5 under the three-dimensional earth network implemented by webGL. This method applies the FileSystem API and the web Worker API to set up a disk cache to save the tile temporarily. It can effectively reduce the frequency of access to servers. Based on this, by making comparative experiment with the absence of buffer, this paper shows that the proposed disk cache mechanism can improve the efficiency of visualization effectively with large-scale tile data.

Computational Fluid dynamics (CFd) is a numerical approach to model fluids in multidimensional space using the Navier-Stokes equations and databases of fluid properties to arrive at a full simulation of a fluid dynamics and heat transfer system. A numerical study on heat transfer to supercritical water (SCW) flowing in a vertical tube is carried out using the ANSYS FLUENT code and employing the SST k-Ε turbulence model. The 3d mesh consists of a 1/8 section (45° radially) of a bare tube. The numerical results on wall temperature distributions under normal and deteriorated heat transfer conditions are compared to experimental results. The same geometry is then simulated with an orifice to study the effect of geometrical perturbation on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of SCW. The orifice is placed areas to test the effect on normal, deteriorated and enhanced heat transfer regimes. The flow effects and heat transfer characteristics will be studied around the appendages to arrive at a fundamental understanding of the phenomena related to supercritical water turbulence. The Iterated Fission Probability (IFP) method, an accurate method to estimate adjoint-weighted quantities in the continuous-energy Monte Carlo criticality calculations, has been widely used for calculating kinetic parameters and nuclear data sensitivity coefficients. By using a strategy of waiting, however, this method faces the challenge of high memory usage to store the tallies of original contributions which size is proportional to the number of particle histories in each cycle. Recently, the Wielandt method, applied by Monte Carlo code McCArd to calculate kinetic parameters, estimates adjoint fluxes in a single particle history and thus can save memory usage. In this work, the Wielandt method has been applied in Rector Monte Carlo code RMC for nuclear data sensitivity analysis. The methodology and algorithm of applying Wielandt method in estimation of adjoint-based sensitivity coefficients are discussed. Verification is performed by comparing the sensitivity coefficients calculated by Wielandt method with analytical solutions, those computed by IFP method which is also implemented in RMC code for sensitivity analysis, and those from the multi-group TSUNAMI-3d module in SCALE code package. Simulation of transition for internal flow is a desirable work for engineering application. We tried to modify SST transition model for transition prediction of internal flow by adjusting the source term of transport equation for transition onset momentum thickness Reynolds number. As the first step towards this goal, a constant Reynolds number of transition onset was employed. The value was selected by a sensitive study. The modified model was applied to calculate 3d steady and pulsating forced convection heat transfer in a mini-rectangular channel. Comparison with the experimental result shows that the model can successfully predict the trend of steady friction factor, Nusselt number, the amplitude of wall and fluid temperature fluctuation. The fluctuation amplitude of wall temperature decreased first and then increased, but finally decreased again as observed both in simulation and experiment. However, as a result of too big Reynolds number of transition onset we chose, the critical Reynolds number predicted by simulation is bigger than that obtained by the experiment. The value of above mentioned parameters also deviated from experimental data. Further improvement is needed. Copyright © 2015 by JSME.

With the development of earth observation technology, especially the rapid progress of LidAR technology in recent years, the kinds and quantity of three-dimensional spatial information is increasing. How to effectively model and visualize the 3d spatial data has become a key issue for academic and applied science community. The global discrete voxel divides the earth into a series of different scale voxels according to specific rules. However, it is usually bound to the surface, the data model below the surface belongs to 3d geological modeling while data model above is geographic 3d modeling. The earth itself is a complete whole. Splitting it to two parts or using different model frameworks will bring errors caused by the boundary. In this paper, we propose a new global discrete voxel called GeoSOT3d, which is the abbreviation of Geographical coordinates Subdivision grid with One dimension integral coding on 2n-Tree for space. GeoSOT3d framework is an illimitably divisible, multi-level, multi-scale space division pattern, which can seamlessly fit the global space. Based on the GeoSOT3d, a global multi-scale 3d spatial data representation model can be established. It is a model that is trying to represent the spatial object using subdivision unit according to accuracy of spatial data and the size of the entity. At last, in order to verify the theory presented in this issue, we construct a 3d spatial information subdivision visualization prototype system using the GeoSOT3d representation method. We then use the earth's magnetic field data to demonstrate the 3d representation model.

A customized Computational Fluid dynamics (CFd) model of supercritical water (SCW) heat transfer in a vertical tube upward flow is developed and partially validated using experimental data obtained under the operating conditions typical for SCW cooled reactors (SCWRs): at a pressure of 24 MPa, an inner tube diameter of 10 mm, an inlet temperature of 320 or 350 °C and a heated tube length of 4 m. The three values of mass flux (500, 1000 and 1500 kg/m2s) and various values of wall heat flux (from 141 to 729 kW/m2) are considered. Physical properties of SCW are calculated by using the REFPROP software from National Institute of Standards and technology (NIST). The model has been incorporated into the commercial general-purpose CFd software, PHOENICS. Various turbulence models and numerical grid settings are tested. The study has demonstrated a good agreement between the CFd predictions and the experimental data on the inside tube wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient with use of a two-layer low-Reynolds-number k-Ε turbulence model. However, a further model development is required under the conditions of significant effects of buoyancy force on heat transfer characteristics (the conditions of low values of mass flux and high values of wall heat flux). Practical recommendations are made regarding potential model applications in 3d analyses of SCWRs. Copyright © 2015 by JSME.
