Location-based social network services (LBSNS) such as Foursquare are getting the highlight with the extensive spread of GPS-enabled mobile devices, and a large body of research has been conducted to devise methods for understanding and clustering places. However, in previous studies, the predefined set of semantic categories of places play a critical role in both discovery and evaluation of the results, despite its limited ability to represent the dynamics of the places. We explore beyond the predefined semantic categories of the places and discover topic based place semantics through the use of Latent dirichlet Allocation, by extracting topics from the text which people post on site. We also show the proposed method allows for understanding the temporal dynamics of the place semantics. The finding of this study is intended for, but not limited to, context aware services and place recommendation systems.

We present a strategy to achieve an updatable three-dimensional (3d) holographic display system currently developed by our S-innovation project. Photorefractive polymers are promising materials for an updatable 3d holographic display and imaging. Triphenylamine-based photorefractive (PR) polymer composites have a high potential for a holographic display device with the fast response time of 2.2 ms and the high diffraction efficiency of 59 % under an applied field of 60 V μm-1. A PR ferroelectric liquid crystal system gave a faster response time of 900 μs and an extremely large optical gain up to 1200 cm-1. In addition to these advanced PR composites, PR-like monolithic compound with no-bias field gave great potentials for a 3d holographic diffraction application. Further a molecular designing of PR composites promises an updatable full-color 3d holographic display system. © 2014 ICPOF.

Location-based services, and in particular personal navigation systems, have become increasingly popular with the widespread use of GPS technology in smart devices. Existing navigation systems are designed to suggest routes based on the shortest distance or the fastest time to a target. In this paper, we propose a new type of route navigation based on regional context-primarily sentiments. Our system, called SocRoutes, aims to find a safer, friendlier, and more enjoyable route based on sentiments inferred from real-time, geo-tagged messages from Twitter. SocRoutes tailors routes by avoiding places with extremely negative sentiments, thereby potentially finding a safer and more enjoyable route with marginal increase in total distance compared to the shortest path. The system supports three types of traveling modes: walking, bicycling, and driving. We validated the idea based on crime history data from the City of Chicago Portal in december 2012, and sentiments extracted from geotagged tweets during the same time. We discovered that there was a significant correlation between regional Twitter posting sentiments and crime rate, in particular for high-crime and highly negative sentiment areas. We also demonstrated that SocRoutes, by solely utilizing social media sentiments, can find routes that bypass crime hotspots.

It would be very difficult even for a resident to characterise the social dynamics of a city and to reveal to foreigners the evolving activity patterns which occur in its various areas. To address this problem, however, large amount of data produced by location-based social networks (LBSNs) can be exploited and combined effectively with techniques of user profiling. The key idea we introduce in this demo is to improve city areas and venues classification using semantics extracted both from places and from the online profiles of people who frequent those places. We present the results of our methodology in LiveCities(1), a web application which shows the hidden character of several italian cities through clustering and information visualisations paradigms. In particular we give in-depth insights of the city of Florence, IT, for which the majority of the data in our dataset have been collected. The system provides personal recommendation of areas and venues matching user interests and allows the free exploration of urban social dynamics in terms of people lifestyle, business, demographics, transport etc. with the objective to uncover the real 'pulse' of the city. We conducted a qualitative validation through an online questionnaire with 28 residents of Florence to understand the shared perception of city areas by its inhabitants and to check if their mental maps align to our results. Our evaluation shows how considering also contextual semantics like people profiles of interests in venues categorisation can improve clustering algorithms and give good insights of the endemic characteristics and behaviours of the detected areas.

We provided the photorefractive (PR) performance of a methyl-substituted poly(triarylamine) (PTAA)-based PR device by using self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-coated indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrodes. The PTAA-based PR device showed a diffraction efficiency η of 59.0%, PR response time τ of 2.2 ms, and sensitivity S of 454 cm2 J-1 using a 532 nm writing beam (0.245 Wcm-2) at an applied dC electric field of 60 V μm-1, which can be evaluated as the highest PR sensitivity. In addition, another important feature is that the PTAAbased PR device can drive AC electric field at a 100 Hz frequency at which image blurring is not sensed for eyes of an observer. The PTAA-based PR device for AC electric field capable of operation at 100 Hz will contribute more to the development of real-time holographic 3d technologies. © 2014 ICPOF.

YouTube is the world's largest video sharing platform where both professional and non-professional users participate in creating, uploading, and viewing content. In this work, we analyze content in the music category created by the nonprofessionals, which we refer to as user-generated content (UGCs). Non-professional users frequently upload content (UGCs) that are parodies, remakes, or covers of the music videos uploaded by professionals, namely the official record labels. Along with the success of official music videos on YouTube, we find the increased participation of users in creating the UGCs related to the music videos. In this study, we characterize the UGC uploading behavior in terms of what, where, and when. Furthermore, we measure the relationship between the popularity of the original content and creation of the related UGCs. We find that the UGC uploading behavior is different depending on the types of the UGC and across different genres of music videos. We also find that UGC sharing is a highly global activity;popular UGCs are created from all over the world despite the fact that the popular music videos originate from a very limited number of locations. Our findings imply that utilizing the information on re-created UGCs is important in order to understand and to predict the popularity of the original content.

The paper deals with the study of latent heats of melting and solidifying of real steel grades. Two real steel grades were investigated and values of latent heats of melting and solidifying were obtained. Latent heats are very important quantities for thermodynamic and kinetic modelling. These data are also valuable for many SWs used for technological processes modelling. The obtained data can serve for the addition and enhancement of many thermodynamic databases. Latent heats of phase transformations were obtained using dSC method (differential Scanning Calorimetry). Setaram MHTC (Multi High Temperature Calorimeter) Line 96 equipped with 3d dSC sensor was used for measurements. Controlled heating/cooling of alloys was conducted at the rate of 5 K min-1. Comparison and discussion of experimental and calculated (IdS, Thermo-Calc) data was performed, too.

The web has involved diverse media services, such as blogs, photo/video/link sharing, social networks, and microblogs. These web media react to and affect realworld events, while the mass media still has big influence on social activities. The web and mass media now affect each other. Our use of media has evolved dynamically in the last decade, and this affects our societal behavior. For instance, the first photo of a plane crash landing during the "Miracle on the Hudson" on January 15, 2009 appeared and spread on Twitter and was then used in TV news. during the "Chelyabinsk Meteor" incident on February 15, 2013, many people reported videos of the incident on YouTube then mass media reused them on TV programs. Large scale collection, analysis, and visualization of those multiple media are strongly required for sociology, linguistics, risk management, and marketing researches. We are building a huge scale Japanese web archive, and various analytics engines with a large-scale display wall. Our archive consists of 30 billion web pages crawled for 14 years, 1 billion blog posts for 7 years, and 15 billion tweets for 3 years. In this talk, I present several analysis and visualization systems based on network analysis, natural language processing, image processing, and 3 dimensional visualization. First, I introduce a visualization system for monitoring the information diffusion in Twitter. It can visualizes large scale hierarchical dynamic graphs with temporal animations. Tweets are clustered by their topics, and retweet and mention relationships are represented as graphs. We can easily grasp the appearance of topics and influential users in each topic. I will show some information diffusion patterns under the Great East Japan Earthquake. Next, I introduce a system for analyzing temporal changes in the activities and interests of bloggers through a 3d visualization of phrase dependency structures in sentences. We study the power of fractional allocations of resources to maximize our influence in a network. This work extends in a natural way the well-studied model by Kempe, Kleinberg, and Tardos (2003), where a designer selects a (small) seed set of nodes in a social network to influence directly, this influence cascades when other nodes reach certain thresholds of neighbor influence, and the goal is to maximize the final number of influenced nodes. despite extensive study from both practical and theoretical viewpoints, this model limits the designer to a binary choice for each node, with no chance to apply intermediate levels of influence. This model captures some settings precisely, such as exposure to an idea or pathogen, but it fails to capture very relevant concerns in others, for example, a manufacturer promoting a new product by distributing five "20% off" coupons instead of giving away a single free product. While fractional versions of problems tend to be easier to solve than integral versions, for influence maximization, we show that the two versions have essentially the same computational complexity. On the other hand, the two versions can have vastly different solutions: the added flexibility of fractional allocation can lead to significantly improved influence. Our main theoretical contribution is to show how to adapt the major positive results from the integral case to the fractional case. Specifically, Mossel and Roch (2006) used the submodularity of influence to obtain their integral results;we introduce a new notion of continuous submodularity, and use this to obtain matching fractional results. We conclude that we can achieve the same greedy (1 - 1 / e - epsilon) - approximation for the fractional case as the integral case, and that other heuristics are likely to carry over as well. In practice, we find that the fractional model performs substantially better than the integral model, according to simulations on real-world social network data.

Although it is relatively easy to equip mobile robot with Kinect sensor, implementation of mapping algorithm can be non trivial. In this article, we describe sensor device, robot map formats and two main approaches to 3d reconstruction, problem closely connected to SLAM mapping problem with Kinect sensor. We experimentally evaluate reference implementations of both algorithms, compare their results and discuss published and possible improvements of both approaches.
