Two and three dimensional finite element models (FEM) were developed to simulate the behavior of a fractured jaw bone and the fixation materials. Mini-plates with various geometric and material properties and screw combinations were considered. Their effects on the variation of maximum stress contours were investigated. The geometric and material properties of the plate, screw and bone were seen to play important roles in effecting the relative displacement at the fractured surface and the spatial variation of the maximum stress across the jaw bone. Softer materials yielded less stress concentrations around the screws while increasing the relative deformation at the fractured surface and stiffer ones caused higher stress concentrations while decreasing the displacements. Results were also seen to be dependent on the loading and the need for the use of patient specific 3d solutions was emphasized.

Quality assessment (QA) and brain extraction (BE) are two fundamental steps in 3d fetal brain MRI reconstruction and quantification. Conventionally, QA and BE are performed independently, ignoring the inherent relation of the two closely-related tasks. However, both of them focus on the brain region representation, so they can be jointly optimized to ensure the network to learn shared features and avoid overfitting. To this end, we propose a novel multi-stage deep learning model for joint QA and BE of fetal MRI. The locations and orientations of fetal brains are randomly variable, and the shapes and appearances of fetal brains change remarkably across gestational ages, thus imposing great challenges to extract shared features of QA and BE. To address these problems, we firstly design a brain detector to locate the brain region. Then we introduce the deformable convolution to adaptively adjust the receptive field for dealing with variable brain shapes. Finally, a task-specific module is used for image QA and BE simultaneously. To obtain a well-trained model, we further propose a multi-step training strategy. We cross validate our method on two independent fetal MRI datasets acquired from different scanners with different imaging protocols, and achieve promising performance. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Plant growth is one of the most important components in production environment control. In recent years, the development of stereo imaging techniques and, hardware such as stereo camera allows for precise measurement of the 3d structure of an object. However, in order to monitor plant growth at multiple points in space and time, it is necessary to construct an affordable system from a practical viewpoint in agriculture. Therefore, in this study, we focus on parameter optimization in parallax estimation to achieve highly accurate plant height measurement even with inexpensive hardware. In particular, this study applies an optimization method, namely a Genetic algorithm, to several parameters of the basic algorithm for disparity estimation considering objective functions. In this study, we set our objective functions such as Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), and Structural SIMilarity (SSIM). The results of this study show that the optimization methods can improve the accuracy of disparity estimation for plant shape.

In this paper a novel idea of estimating the 3d geometry and building material of indoor environments is proposed. The idea is based on assumption that the received radio signal is distorted due to interaction with the surrounding objects and thus includes the signature of the radio environment. We describe the methodology how to apply radio environment signatures for characterization of geometry and building material of indoor environments applying machine learning tools using ray tracing simulations and ultra-wide band communication technology. The idea is based on the assumption that the emerging broadband wireless systems applies multiple antenna and is able to estimate the channel impulse response for each transmit-receive antenna pair.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have provided promising data enrichment solutions by synthesizing high-fidelity images. However, generating large sets of labeled images with new anatomical variations remains unexplored. We propose a novel method for synthesizing cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images on a population of virtual subjects with a large anatomical variation, introduced using the 4d eXtended Cardiac and Torso (XCAT) computerized human phantom. We investigate two conditional image synthesis approaches grounded on a semantically-consistent mask-guided image generation technique: 4-class and 8-class XCAT-GANs. The 4-class technique relies on only the annotations of the heart;while the 8-class technique employs a predicted multi-tissue label map of the heart-surrounding organs and provides better guidance for our conditional image synthesis. For both techniques, we train our conditional XCAT-GAN with real images paired with corresponding labels and subsequently at the inference time, we substitute the labels with the XCAT derived ones. Therefore, the trained network accurately transfers the tissue-specific textures to the new label maps. By creating 33 virtual subjects of synthetic CMR images at the end-diastolic and end-systolic phases, we evaluate the usefulness of such data in the downstream cardiac cavity segmentation task under different augmentation strategies. Results demonstrate that even with only 20% of real images (40 volumes) seen during training, segmentation performance is retained with the addition of synthetic CMR images. Moreover, the improvement in utilizing synthetic images for augmenting the real data is evident through the reduction of Hausdorff distance upto 28% and an increase in the dice score upto 5%, indicating a higher similarity to the ground truth in all dimensions. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A comparison of techniques for software calibration of lumped ports is presented in this paper. Three calibration techniques are investigated: double delay method, short-open calibration, and analytic evaluation of port parasitic inductance. All methods were applied to the same microstrip device and the efficiency of each calibration technique is discussed in the results section.

According to data received from an international survey, almost 6800 students are enrolled in software engineering degree programs in 11 countries, as of January, 2001. A total of 94 academic programs in software engineering are in place at 60 universities with 350 full-time faculty and nearly 200 part-time faculty teaching hundreds of undergraduate and graduate courses in the discipline. Over 5500 people have obtained degrees in software engineering since 1979. The authors are conducting the first of an ongoing annual survey of international academic software engineering programs, as a joint acm/IEEE-CS project. This status report covers: history, audience, initial survey, initial partial results available on the WWW, request for evaluation of WWW-site, request for additional questions for next version of survey, time-line for next version of the survey, "lessons learned," and some future directions. The annual report and survey results will be posted on a wide variety of web pages. A more current report, based on the sabbatical of the first author, will be presented at the conference. The sabbatical involves the initial development of an "international Software Engineering University Consortium-ISEUC". A sample scenario for an employee in industry who becomes a student in ISEUC is given.

The paper addresses the issue of modeling the flow process in transmission pipelines. A base model used for numerical simulation is introduced. Under certain assumptions concerning steady state analysis, the differential equations describing the process are solved analytically for two cases: zero and nonzero inclination angle α. These equations describe a constant flow rate and a corresponding distribution of the pressure along the considered pipeline for both cases. The pipe length at which the pipeline is choking (the mass flow is equal zero) for given boundary pressures and inclination angle, is also derived. Convergence of the proposed solution for inclination angle α→ 0 to the zero tilt solution, is proved. An exemplary practical relationship based on obtained equations is provided as a 3d chart. A test pipeline with adjustable inclination angles of its selected parts is considered. The analytic solution for the effective angle is compared with numerical solutions, which show relevant discrepancies between the results obtained for nonzero angles. Clearly, the numerical solution for a straight pipeline (with the increasing number of segments) is convergent to the analytic solution. Moreover, up to 16°, the analytic approximation (using an effective inclination angle) is sufficient, and produces similar results as the numerical simulation.

Lightweight heterogeneous materials such as unidirectional (Ud) carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) are advantageous due to their tailorable, lightweight, and multi-directional capabilities, making them a strong candidate for aerospace applications. However, in prepreg-based laminate manufacturing, the resin-rich interlaminar (IL) regions of composite laminates are prone to failure. To overcome these shortcomings, various methods to reinforce the IL region have been studied. In this study, vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) were used to provide interlaminar reinforcement to CFRP specimens in a configuration known as "nanostitch." The purpose was to analyze the crack bifurcation phenomenon observed in previous studies, where the crack propagated away from the interlaminar region into the intralaminar region. Nanostitched and baseline specimens were tested via in situ synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SRCT) to study the behavior of the crack propagation in Mode I specimens, and ex situ Mode I testing was conducted to ensure characteristic behavior. SRCT images taken across the width of the Mode I specimens showed the crack propagating into the intralaminar region across the width of the specimen, consistent with previous work and demonstrating an IL fracture toughness superior to that of the baseline specimen. Ex situ Mode I testing showed crack bifurcation but no change in calculated Mode I fracture toughness between baseline and nanostitched specimens, consistent with prior work and indicating that the intralaminar Mode I toughness is similar in magnitude to the IL baseline fracture toughness. © 2023 international Committee on Composite Materials. We analyze fabrication-induced imperfections and disorder in our photonic crystals (PC) fabricated by micro-system technologies. Based on a correspondence between holograms and photonic crystals, we introduce technological figures of merit valid for arbitrary PC structures. We use these figures of merit to analyze a practical example of a 1d PC structure. For this purpose, we designed our PCs for the middle-wavelength infrared range using the transfer matrix technique and fabricated them in silicon/silica using RF sputtering. We used scanning electron microscopy to determine the cross-sectional geometrical parameters of PCs and to find their deviations from the designed values. Fourier infrared spectroscopy was used to measure spectral transmittance of the samples. The observed imperfections result in spectral transmission curves deviating from the designed characteristics, and reduce overall transmission by scattering. The presented analysis enables the prediction of attainable quality of PCs. The approach is applicable to 1d, 2d or 3d photonic crystals.
