We analyze fabrication-induced imperfections anddisorder in our photonic crystals (PC) fabricated by micro-system technologies. Based on a correspondence between holograms and photonic crystals, we introduce technological figures of merit valid for arbitrary PC structures. We use these figures of merit to analyze a practical example of a 1d PC structure. For this purpose, we designed our PCs for the middle-wavelength infrared range using the transfer matrix technique and fabricated them in silicon/silica using RF sputtering. We used scanning electron microscopy to determine the cross-sectional geometrical parameters of PCs and to find their deviations from the designed values. Fourier infrared spectroscopy was used to measure spectral transmittance of the samples. The observed imperfections result in spectral transmission curves deviating from the designed characteristics, and reduce overall transmission by scattering. The presented analysis enables the prediction of attainable quality of PCs. The approach is applicable to 1d, 2d or 3d photonic crystals.

The anatomical information for the models is first segmented from the images and then used by a surface reconstruction algorithm to create 3d meshes that accurately represent the surface of the organs being modeled. The meshes are then exported in an open format for manipulation in a graphics platform. Using high-end graphics algorithms we render and texture-map our meshes. We can also deform the meshes and assign physical and material properties to them. Our models can be used for virtual reality applications and can also be transmitted over the Internet for remote interactive visualization and retrieval.

We proposed a technique for reconstructing bio-electric conductivity distribution from measured tangential magnet fielddata. That is, in the 2d ROI with an arbitrary depth two orthogonal tangential components of 3d current vector field were respectively estimated from the synthetically measured two tangential magnetic fields, from which the 2d conductivity distribution was estimated. To cope with inevitable measurement errors, a robust numerical solution was developed, in which the mollification method and the regularization method were efficiently utilized. By performing this 2d reconstruction at each depth, 3d conductivity distribution could be estimated. As typical applications, pathological state and/or bio-electric conductive path can be evaluated by monitoring the temporal change of the reconstructed3d conductivity distribution. The feasibility of this technique was briefly verified by reconstructing a conductivity distribution using simulated noise-filled magnetic fielddata, with resultant reconstructions indicating that the approach could provide a practical means for robustly reconstructing a conductivity distribution.

It is important to know the information flow between active regions in the brain for the elucidation of the information processing mechanism and for disease detection in the human brain. In this paper, at first, we estimate dipoles (via 3-layered concentric spherical model, 2-dipole estimation) from evoked potentials. Secondary, using derived 2 dipole locations and moments as loci and quantities of brain activities, we analyze the information flow between the two time-series of the 1st and the 2nddipole moments by use of a time-series analysis method based on the directed transformation. We obtain bidirectional information flows between the neuronal activities localized in 3d space of the brain with respect to somatosensory evoked potentials measured with 21 electrodes arranged according to the international 10-20 standard by electrical stimulations on the median nerve of the right hand.
