This paper presents radio frequency identification (RFID) based prepaid energy meter and home automation system with an android application running at subscriber's mobile station. The energy meter is credited though RFID technology and the automation of different appliances are controlled by the subscriber via an android mobile application. The subscribers may check their current credit, consumed units, current load and they can manage appliances remotely. We have also introduced a load management system, when load exceeds a certain defined level then appliances are automatically shut down. An automatic theft detection mechanism has also been set in place for the system. © 2017 Chinese automation and computing Society in the UK - CACSUK.

Malware is a widespread problem and despite the common use of anti-virus software, the diversity of malware is still increasing. A major challenge facing the anti-virus industry is how to effectively detect thousands of malware samples that are received every day. With the development of big data and human-computer interaction techniques, the usability and user experience of microwave oven are continuously evolving. It needs strong interactive content attributes and interaction to meet users' needs in different places or scenes. The intelligent microwave oven adopts PACT-P system as its interactive design method, so as to make it with natural interaction, available values and user's emotional experience, namely, a usable, functional and wanted intelligent microwave oven. Practice cases show that the development trend of intelligent microwave oven in product design, technology application, usage method, application scenarios would provide users with better natural interactive experience in the end and turn machine interaction between users and household electrical appliances into emotional communication. This paper proposes a real-time identification method for auto-regressive with exogenous inputs and state-dependent parameters (ARX-SDP). This model is always non-linear. We conveniently adapt Young's off-line approach to an real-time approach with reduced computational cost. Young's approach focuses on discovering state-parameter dependence. This implies to unveil the nonlinear structure of the system. The proposed real-time method focuses on monitoring the non-linear state-parameter dependence, detecting structural changes and updating the model structure in real time. Finally, applications to the real-time identification of state-dependent parameters are presented and structural changes are simulated in order to test our approach. © 2017 Chinese automation and computing Society in the UK - CACSUK.

This, paper showcases results from an empirical study conducted by involving the people with dementia (PWD). The different kinds of supports offered by the assistive technology (AT) to the PWD are analyzed along their impact on the success of such technologies. The technology usability questionnaire is used to collect data. The people having mild dementia who use AT participated in the survey. The results revealed four major AT supports named (social, operational, psychological and physical) for the PWD. Although all types of supports contribute positively, the social support shows the strongest impact for technology success. Further analysis indicates that the performance consistency of AT with the claims of its manufacturers determine its retention period. Social isolation and dependence on others usually demoralizes the confidence of the PWD, therefore more efforts are needed to enable social support through the use of AT for the wellbeing of the PWD. © 2017 Chinese automation and computing Society in the UK - CACSUK.

In this paper, the suboptimal control problem is addressed for a class of discrete time-varying systems subjected to the stochastic communication protocol (SCP). The measurements provided by the sensors are transmitted through the communication channel and then fed into the controller. The SCP is utilized to select the sensor getting access to the communication media. In presence of the nonlinearities, the accurate value of the cost function cannot be obtained. As an alternative, a certain upper bound of the cost function is employed to quantify the control performance. The main purpose of the addressed problem is to develop the time-varying control parameters such that the derived upper bound of the cost function can be minimized over the finite-horizon [0, N]. The algorithm to compute the control parameters is provided in terms of a set of backward coupled Riccati-like recursions. In the end, a numerical example is provided to verify the validity of the proposed design method. © 2017 Chinese automation and computing Society in the UK - CACSUK.

In many areas of engineering, the distribution of the measurements always departs from Gaussian to be heavy-tailed due to the presence of outliers, and most of the traditional identification algorithms such as the gradient based and the least-squares based algorithms are not robust in that case. This paper proposes a modified iteratively reweighted correlation analysis algorithm for robust parameter estimation of output error systems with colored heavy-tailed noises. The proposed algorithm is adopted to get the robust finite impulse response auxiliary model, and with the reconstructed noise-free output, the parameters of the output error system can be easily identified by a least squares method. The basic idea of the modified algorithm is to replace the t-distribution based m-estimator with the Tukey's biweight m-estimator, so that the outliers in a specific region can be completely rejected. Compare to the original algorithm, the modified algorithm can achieve higher estimation accuracy in Gaussian mixture noise, simulation results confirm this conclusion. © 2017 Chinese automation and computing Society in the UK - CACSUK.

Video object segmentation is an essential procedure of pedestrian detection and tracking to measure building occupancy. To tackle the difficulties of environmental light change and dynamic background in the scene of building entrance, this paper proposes a novel video object segmentation algorithm using background model based on pixel time series clustering. The background model uses specific distance metrics of pixel values in YUV space to decrease interference of environmental light change. It maintains multiple clustering centers to process dynamic background and introduces the maximum time for no match to exclude foreground objects from the background model. It uses a small storage to memorize a structured movement and builds a compact model for dynamic background. Experimental results demonstrate a good segmentation accuracy and a fast processing speed in comparison to other algorithms. Our algorithm is very suitable for scenarios such as building entrances. © 2017 Chinese automation and computing Society in the UK - CACSUK.
