The Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is a relatively new class of Computational Fluid Dynamics methods. In this paper, we report our work on SunwayLB, which enables LBM based solutions aiming for industrial applications. We propose several techniques to boost the simulation speed and improve the scalability of SunwayLB, including a customized multi-level domain decomposition and data sharing scheme, a carefully orchestrated strategy to fuse kernels with different performance constraints for a more balanced workload, and optimization strategies for assembly code, which bring up to 137x speedup. Based on these optimization schemes, we manage to perform the largest direct numerical simulation which involves up to 5.6 trillion lattice cells, achieving 11,245 billion cell updates per second (GLUPS), 77% memory bandwidth utilization and a sustained performance of 4.7 PFlops. We also demonstrate a series of computational experiments for extreme-large scale fluid flow, as examples of real-world applications, to check the validity and performance of our work. The results show that SunwayLB is competent for a practical solution for industrial applications.

The advancements in mobile hardware and network technologies facilitate the processing power, storage capability, and connection quality. Such developments enable sophistic functions, ubiquitous power- and bandwidth-hungry applications that fundamentally changes the individual's lifestyle. Although Cloud Computing technologies have already been leveraged to coordinate with the capability and battery-constraint mobile User Equipment (UE), the long-distance propagation delay downgrades the network QoS and user QoE. In this paper, we propose a queueing-based Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) model that concerns the offloading procedure, especially in the time-constraint scenarios. A queueing model is proposed for the offloading process, considering the dynamic network queueing delay. A heuristic scheduling model is designed to maximize the offloading energy and execution efficiency. A regression prediction model is implemented to achieve dynamic resource allocation. In the experiment, the proposed model is compared to the recent studies, and the results indicate that the proposed model can outperform the current studies in terms of execution time and energy reservation.

Synthetic workloads are commonly used to exercise simulation tools for performance, performance tuning, and scalability studies. Sometimes these workloads are simple streams of test data following various distributions and in other cases these workloads are generated by more complex, configurable systems. An example of the former is a stream of input events at different arrival rates that might be used to test the performance of an event queue data structure. An example of the latter is the PHOLD simulation model that is often used to contrast the performance implications of different design solutions in a parallel simulation engine. One of the key challenges for synthetic workloads is the question of setting the parameters so that the workload properly reflects the behavior of actual workloads. This paper collects profile data from multiple real-world discrete-event simulation models in multiple configurations and sizes from the ROSS and WARPED2 repositories. A principle focus of this paper is the capture and reporting of profiling data to understand event granularities and event profile data to assist in the configuration of synthetic discrete event model generators.

The high-performance requirements needed to implement the most advanced functionalities of current and future Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are challenging the development processes of CPSs. On one side, CPSs rely on model-driven engineering (MDE) to satisfy the non-functional constraints and to ensure a smooth and safe integration of new features. On the other side, the use of complex parallel and heterogeneous embedded processor architectures becomes mandatory to cope with the performance requirements. In this regard, parallel programming models, such as OpenMP or CUDA, are a fundamental brick to fully exploit the performance capabilities of these architectures. However, parallel programming models are not compatible with current MDE approaches, creating a gap between the MDE used to develop CPSs and the parallel programming models supported by novel and future embedded *** AMPERE project will bridge this gap by implementing a novel software architecture for the development of advanced CPSs. To do so, the proposed software architecture will be capable of capturing the definition of the components and communications described in the MDE framework, together with the non-functional properties, and transform it into key parallel constructs present in current parallel models, which may require extensions. These features will allow for making an efficient use of underlying parallel and heterogeneous architectures, while ensuring compliance with non-functional requirements, including those on real-time performance of the system.

The Massively parallel Computation (MPC) model serves as a common abstraction of many modern large-scale data processing frameworks, and has been receiving increasingly more attention over the past few years, especially in the context of classical graph problems. So far, the only way to argue lower bounds for this model is to condition on conjectures about the hardness of some specific problems, such as graph connectivity on promise graphs that are either one cycle or two cycles, usually called the one cycle vs. two cycles problem. This is unlike the traditional arguments based on conjectures about complexity classes (e.g., P =6 NP), which are often more robust in the sense that refuting them would lead to groundbreaking algorithms for a whole bunch of problems. In this paper we present connections between problems and classes of problems that allow the latter type of arguments. These connections concern the class of problems solvable in a sublogarithmic amount of rounds in the MPC model, denoted by MPC(o(log N)), and some standard classes concerning space complexity, namely L and NL, and suggest conjectures that are robust in the sense that refuting them would lead to many surprisingly fast new algorithms in the MPC model. This paper presents a load balancing method for a multi-block grids-based CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) application on heterogeneous platform. This method includes an asymmetric task scheduling scheme and a load balancing model. The idea is to balance the computing speed between the CPU and the coprocessor by adjusting the workload and the numbers of threads on both sides. Optimal load balance parameters are empirically selected, guided by a performance model. Performance evaluation is conducted on a computer server consists of two Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 CPUs and two MIC coprocessors (Xeon Phi 5110P and Xeon Phi 7120P) for the simulation of turbulent combustion in a supersonic combustor. The results show that the performance is highly sensitive to the load balance parameters. With the optimal parameters, the heterogeneous computing achieves a maximum speedup of 2.30 × for a 6-block mesh, and a maximum speedup of 2.66 × for a 8-block mesh, over the CPU-only computing.

The increasing precision in simulation models leads to a high computational effort. In general, parallel and distributed simulation is one technique to speed up a simulation to an acceptable runtime. Depending on the simulation model, the suitability of a parallel or distributed simulation varies. This applies also to coupled V2X simulations, where distributed computation may help to increase performance drastically. In this work, we identify opportunities and possibilities regarding distributed V2X simulations. Therefore, we describe and evaluate an approach to distribute multiple instances of the well-known Veins framework that are interacting and running concurrently. The instances are coupled using a hybrid co-simulation framework based on the High Level Architecture. With increasing traffic load, a higher speedup can be measured.

Due to the increasing complexity of simulation models, the experiments conducted with these models become more complex as well. To date, software support for reproducible complex simulation experiments is constrained to specific application domains and experiment types. As a step towards a one-size-fits-all solution, we express simulation experiments as pure functions. With random number generation wrapped in the state monad, we achieve bit-level reproducibility of simulation results even for complex experiment setups. Additionally, we show how simulation runs can be executed in parallel without jeopardizing reproducibility. While the approach is independent of concrete simulation backends, we illustrate it by using NetLogo in various complex simulation experiments, utilizing design of experiments, simulation-based optimization, and statistical model checking.

The ultra-dense radio access network with distributed MU-MIMO is considered as a promising approach to improve the coverage and the link capacity in 5G advanced systems. However, large-scale MU-MIMO requires prohibitively high computational complexity. Our previous work has proved that grouping neighborhood users/antennas into a number of clusters and performing cluster-wise MU-MIMO in parallel can alleviate the computational complexity problem, but the link capacity improvement is limited by the severe interference. In this paper, we propose a 2-step graph coloring algorithm that can eliminate both the inter-cell interferences and the inter-cluster interferences. The first step is to apply the graph coloring algorithm on the cell edge in order to reduce the inter-cell interferences. Once the color of the cell edge has been decided, the second step is to utilize the conditional graph coloring to the clusters within each BS cell. As a preliminary research, we focus on the second step and propose a Restricted Color Number (RCN) algorithm to mitigate the inter-cluster interferences. The computer simulation results show that our RCN algorithm can improve the link capacity compared with no coloring case.

High utility pattern mining (HUPM) has become a key issue in knowledge discovery since it provides retailers and managers with useful information for making decisions efficiently. However, previous studies most focused on mining the high-utility patterns (HUPs) from a single database. In this paper, we present a framework to incorporate the weighted model for parallel synthesis of the discovered HUPs from various databases. The pre-large concept was also used as a buffer here in order to provide more prospective HUPs, thus providing higher accuracy of the synthesized patterns. From our experiments, the developed model exceeds existing works, in particular the designed model has increased precision and recall on knowledge synthesization compared to the previous works.
