The paper presents a solution for holonic control of smart manufacturing systems, using a mix of digitization procedures that capitalize on the possibilities offered by a Digital Twin simulation environment in modeling and simulating both the physical entities of the industrial plant and of the execution phases of the production process. The main novelty is the creation of software assets by encapsulating FBs in holon-type containers, which can be used both in the design phase and in the production control phase. The validation of the solution was performed on a mechatronic laboratory line, specialized for assembly and disassembly operations. © 2021 IEEE.

Deploying Hadoop MapReduce applications in a virtualized environment is adopted by some cloud computing providers for better resource utilization. However, the virtualization overhead can negatively affect the performance of applications when executed on virtual machines rather than physical servers. In that regard, this paper introduces a methodology to match the software and hardware specifications of virtual and physical Hadoop clusters to allow accurate measurement of virtualization overhead as well as enable the efficient execution of MapReduce applications on both clusters. The methodology considers configuring non uniform memory access in the utilized powerful servers. It also factors in multipath aggregation that facilitates load balancing and failover protection when the servers access SAN storage over a local Ethernet network. The WordCount application with workloads that reached 750 GB was executed on both clusters to evaluate the effects of virtualization on application performance. The results showed that the average elapsed time of a MapReduce application on a specific virtual cluster can be 19.2% higher than that on a physical cluster, mainly due to I/O throughput degradation over the virtual cluster in that case. © 2022 IEEE.

This article examines the structure of communicative relations in modern society, which becomes - along with the development of mass media technologies - more and more a "show society". So, the authors note that the analysis of the social interaction design on the base of the theatrical dramaturgy is quite relevant. The game model of postmodern society is considered within the framework of the socio-phenomenological attitude of modern philosophy using the methods of analogy and comparative analysis. The problem of ambiguous understanding of the reality and meaning of human actions, more reinforced by the symbolism of visualization as a priority public form in social interactions, comes to the forefront. As the computer games and online networks spread into everyday life, professional activities and education, the theatrical dramaturgy turns out to be immanent in all social life. The principles and methods of this social dramaturgy are studied in the context of an interdisciplinary analysis of the trend for modern society gamification. The authors’ contribution consists in the study of the specifics of social interactions construction in the model of post-dramatic theater in terms of the non-classical vision of social events dynamics resulting from interdisciplinary analysis of the gamification forms in hybrid interaction systems. The principles of the social dramaturgy are shown as allowing to identify the new trends in the game manifestation associated with the intensive development of digital media technologies. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

MV cables are widely used to deliver electrical power from a transmission system to the consumers. XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) is the most common material used for cables insulation due to its excellent dielectric and mechanical properties. The XLPE cables are exposed to different types of stresses that impacts their functionality. Under elevated temperature conditions, thermal expansion in the insulation region can contribute to the development of mechanical stress. Mechanical stress greatly affects the performance of the cable and can contribute to faster aging when exposed for a prolonged period. Presence of voids or impurities can accentuate the impact of mechanical stress due to a reduction in the dielectric properties of the insulation. This paper provides a brief review of the phenomenon of mechanical stress due to severe thermal conditions and its impact on the different mechanical properties of the cable. The paper also illustrates the cable insulation properties for different number of voids in the insulation region. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technique on COMSOL multiphysics software is used in this study. The paper will illustrate the correlation between the tensile stress in the insulation region and the aging time with regards to the increase in the number of voids. The study provides thermo-mechanical stress distribution of the cable and the influence of mechanical stress on the cable functionality. © 2022 IEEE.

In the justice trail of insurance contract disputes, a judge is required to quickly understand the main points involved in an insurance contract to find related pieces of evidence. The content of an insurance contract is usually standardized and organized to some degree. Researchers and engineers can use techniques including deep learning and rule engines to analyze insurance contracts. Typical tasks include contract outline identification and contract clause extraction. However, judicial applications are facing the challenge of robustness, interpretability, process transparency and continuous improvement as well as accuracy and recall rate. This paper proposed an outline driven framework to extract hierarchical clauses from multimodal electronic contracts by com-bining rules summarized by experts and deep learning methods to continuously discover and improve the rule base. In our approach, conflicts of outlines can be solved globally by combining basic outline rules, outline sequence sorting, an entropy based outline sequence filtering and a global fault tolerance strat-egy. A computer vision method is used to extract complete contract clauses by their spatial position relations. Results from judicial datasets show that the proposed method can quickly and effectively achieve high performance in recall and accuracy compared with purely deep learning algorithms and can be built up in a short period, which shows the practical value in rapid and long-term iterative development. © 2021 IEEE.

Ultra-dense mobile edge computing (MEC) is expected as an effective approach to provide services with ultra-low latency and massive connectivity, which is extremely important for delay-sensitive applications. In this paper, we study service instance (SI) placement for delay-sensitive applications in ultra-dense MEC, which decides where to place applications and the required data (programming codes and datasets). In general, the SI placement problem is a combinatorial optimization and usually does not have low-complexity optimal solutions. Existing centralized policies are difficult to implement due to the high complexity, especially when edge servers are densely deployed in the ultra-dense network (UDN). To design an approach that can make SI placement decisions quickly and efficiently, this paper investigates a distributed strategy for multi-user multi-server edge systems in UDN. We first formulate the SI placement problem as a non-linear combinatorial optimization, which is proven to be NP-hard to compute a centralized optimal solution. Then, we propose an uncooperative game to design a low-complexity distributed algorithm. We further analyze the properties of the game and prove the existence of pure strategy Nash Equilibrium. A polynomial-complexity distributed algorithm is proposed to get the Nash Equilibrium. Theoretical analysis shows the algorithm's convergence and the bound of the price of anarchy (PoA), which serves as a performance guarantee in the worst-case scenarios compared to the global optimum. Numerical results validate the convergence and near-optimal performance of the proposed distributed algorithm. © 2021 IEEE.

With the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), various computing paradigms have been proposed and are developing rapidly these years, which led to the explosive increase of the data amount. However, the significant increase in data imposed a significant burden on contemporary server storage. Many approaches have been designed to tackle the challenge. Among them, deduplication is a quite effective data reduction technique, which received considerable attention from both academia and industry in the large-scale storage systems field. Data deduplication identifies redundant data at chunk level by using secure fingerprints, which not only removes replicated data, decreases the bandwidth, but also minimizes the storage usage and cost. This paper aims at describing the general framework of deduplication compression systems with duplicate and resemblance detection in detail. First, we use a flow chart to present the overall framework and process of the deduplication compression system. Then we summarize the existing algorithm applied to duplicate detection and resemblance detection. Additionally, we make a detailed evaluation of different resemblance detection algorithms. Finally, we make a conclusion of delta compressed prototype system, outline the open problems and shed a light on the future research directions in data deduplication systems. © 2021 IEEE.

Clos- or fat-tree-based interconnection networks are widely used in data center and supercomputer designs. Both Clos and fat-tree are non-blocking multistage switch networks. The non-blocking property improves path diversity but meanwhile increases both hardware cost and packet latency. Some applications may not require non-blocking routing but prefer low packet latency. To cope with it, this paper proposes a peer k-ary n-tree or peer fat-tree network that takes the factors of path diversity, hardware cost, and packet latency into consideration. A peer k-ary n-tree network connects compute nodes with about half as many switches and links compared to Clos and fat-tree networks. It has two groups of compute nodes and provides short routing paths between the nodes in distinct groups and non-blocking routing between the nodes in the same group. We describe the peer k-ary n-tree network structure, investigate the topological properties, give a minimal per-hop deterministic routing algorithm, and evaluate the fault tolerance and packet latency of the peer k-ary n-tree network and compare the performance to that of Clos and fat-tree networks. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Content like complex graphics, diagrams, and infographics poses significant challenges in terms of description, comprehension, and communication for individuals with visual limitations. Addressing these challenges requires innovative solutions and a deep understanding of the needs of visually impaired individuals. In this context, a systematic literature review was undertaken to explore previous approaches aimed at making visual information accessible to blind individuals, both for understanding and creating such content. The primary objective of this study was to categorize the various types of representations, including graphs, diagrams, geometric shapes, maps, and other visual forms utilized in interactions with blind individuals. The methodology adopted consisted of a mixed-method approach, presenting a selection of studies conducted between 2015 and 2023, following a structured protocol for research selection in major academic databases. Consequently, 82 studies were classified according to type of supported tasks, type of representation, sensory modality, and assistive technologies. As a result, an analysis of co-occurrence was presented through a representative network depicting the primary sub-dimensions. Additionally, a matrix of certainties, suppositions, and doubts was constructed, highlighting the state of the art, through the main findings and challenges reported in the selected studies. The expectation is to collaborate with the academic community by showing possibilities among dimensions less addressed in studies with blind individuals in the non-textual context, and then pointing out issues to be addressed in future research. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). With the development of cloud computing, energy consumption is getting bigger and bigger, and energy optimization has become one of the research focuses. Task scheduling is an efficient way to reduce the energy consumption of cloud. Most previous works ignored the heterogeneity of physical machines (PMs) configured with different CPUs and GPUs, which may result in high energy consumption in heterogeneous cloud. In this paper, an energy-efficient Task Scheduling Strategy based on Improved Fireworks Algorithm (TSS-IFWA) is proposed to reduce the energy consumption of the CPU/GPU heterogeneous cloud. First, a task scheduling model is constructed, in which the energy consumption of CPUs and GPUs are separately consid-ered. Then we obtain the task scheduling optimization problem of minimizing the energy consumption of heterogeneous cloud. Second, as traditional fireworks algorithm consumes massive computing resource and has a poor convergence performance, we improve a new calculation method of explosion amplitude of the fireworks algorithm. We also optimize the mutation strategy. Third, we utilize the improved fireworks algorithm to solve the task scheduling optimization problem. Specifically, the corre-sponding coding and decoding schemes of the fireworks algorithm are designed to initialize the fireworks individuals. We then obtain task scheduling results. Finally, TSS- IFWA is compared with traditional fireworks algorithm (FWA), round-robin algorithm (RR), and genetic algorithm (GA). The experimental results show that TSS- IFWA has a good performance in reducing energy consumption of heterogeneous cloud. © 2021 IEEE.
